Introduction

A portfolio is a record of ideas - a storehouse, constantly changing.

Architecture is also constantly changing. It must adapt to different scales, times, cultures. Designers must be flexible.

Flexible enough, perhaps, to rig derelict ferries with sails. We have to get across the East River somehow.

Earth Submersible a carbon neutral house for Kapuskasing, Ontario

Earth SubmersibleThe Earth Submersible sinks into its surroundings without disappearing. It does not dominate its landscape; it participates in it. Its interrelated systems conserve energy, protect forest ecosystems, and support industry in Kapuskasing.

The elongated ground-plan is optimized for passive solar gain. Geothermal energy supplements heating, rainwater is collected, and photovoltaics provide power. At the same time, the house offers comfort and healthy living to its resi-dents, who are encouraged to interact with the outdoors.

Barn Transformation Residence and Multi-use Building

Barn TransformationClients approached Brian Williams Architects to design a site and building strategy for a rural site near Milton, Ontario. A house and historic barn exist on the property.

The first stage of the project is the transformation of the barn, which will re-clad the existing structure and transform the interior into a guest house, office, and performance space. A detailed model was prepared for presentation to clients, including interior details and exterior landscape strategies.

Residential Construction Documents

Several projects from the office of Brian Williams Architects are presented here. For one house addition in Brampton, Samuel Ganton prepared a complete set of construction drawings for building permit submission.

For another project, he helped to design a curving concrete ramp to efficiently provide wheelchair access to an indoor pool. The final drawings had to provide enough information so curved formwork could be measured and put in place.

Urban Underlay a park and hotel-spa in Cambridge, Ontario

Urban Underlay - Hotel and Spa

The site of this proposed hotel is currently a parking lot: a transient place, often used as a shortcut. The design preserves the northern half of the site as a landscape park, with diagonal paths preserving movement and public access. Underneath, a spa complex is sunk into the ground, while hotel functions are gathered into a single block on the south side.

The intersection of these two areas of program is occupied by a second level cafe, which connects the spa and hote lobbies, the restaurant, an outdoor terrace, and access to the hotel rooms above.

Building Communities Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Haiti - Building Communities

After the earthquake of January 2010, much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was flattened. Residents were left with the problem of clearing away mounds of concrete rubble, preparing for the approaching hurricane season.

This project proposes to carve out a portion of a rubble-strewn hill site as a new community. From communal shelters at either end, residents are employed to excavate shallow terraces, retained with gabion basket walls formed from rubble. Family shelters can be expanded with local materials into permanent dwellings.

Wind Walk a bridge pathway winds its way from waterfront to city centre

Wind Walk

In preparation for the 2015 Pan Am Games, the city of Hamilton, Ontario, proposed a stadium on a brownfield site in the West Harbour area. Wind Walk proposes to connect the new stadium with existing waterfront trails, as well as with other venues in the downtown centre.

Acting as a bridge over a railway yard, a street intersection, and a local high school, the pathway touches down at the Trailhead and in Central park, spilling out under canopies meant as gathering places.

Teras-Tekton a zoo showcasing animal architecture

Teras-TektonIn the Arch 293 Design Studio Course, students are asked to investigate the concept of the Zoo as a manufactured Landscape. Teras-Tekton is a zoo showcasing animal architecture. It allows visitors to view the process of human construction and industry through the lens of the construction process of beavers, prairie dogs, termites, and similar species.

The site is a disused industrial wharf in Toronto’s port lands. It would be divided into ‘containers’ by retaining walls encasing service and circulation. Some of these areas would contain animal habitats. Others would contain sand storage and soil composting facilties, used both by the zoo and by city operations.

Verse in Bondage poetry and sketching

Verse in BondageI love writing. It’s just as important as architecture.

I love clarity and directness in writing. Overcomplication imprisons words.

I also love Myth, and fantasy, and sketching fantasy. Myths are not lies. They are stories that try to grapple with meaning in the world.

Trees against skies, shining and glowing

Snow on the wind, joy overflowing

The above kind of poetry

is growing rather wearisome

with its tendency to slide neatly into cliché

without saying even one thing

about nature, love, the world, or the price of milk

or anything else worth knowing

in a remotely original way

‘Glowing’ and ‘overflowing’ - those two words

have been rhymed so many times

that they slide over each other without friction.

The reader will glance over them

and dismiss the stanza as rubbish.

But free verse is far too free

an expression of democracy in literature

that approaches anarchy

anyone can write like this

That’s the beauty and the curse

And the lines between poetry and prose

are blurred.

I wrote this without effort

and never thought of rhythm

while rhyme, of course, is trash

If you haven’t understood so far

go back and read it again, and then tell me

what life is like

when imagination dies

and poetry perishes as it does here.
