Welcome
*Gathering Song #393: Breathe on Me, Breath of God E. Hatch
R. Jackson
*The Call to Worship
Liturgist: O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them
all; the earth is full of your creatures.
People: Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there,
living things both small and great.
L: These all look to you to give them food in due season. When you open your hand,
they are filled with good things.
P: When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the
grounds.
L: I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have
my being. May our meditations this morning be pleasing to God, for we find our
rejoicing in the Lord!
Adapted from Psalm 104:24-34
*Opening Hymn: Every Time I Feel the Spirit Afro-American Spiritual
*A Call to Confession (Liturgist)
In the uncertainty of days between resurrection, ascension and the advent of the
holy spirit, the disciples struggled to make sense of the next steps, even Jesus’
resurrected presence startled and confused them. Yet, the spirit of God came
nonetheless. We, too, then can stand in its presence with all that confuses us.
*Unison Prayer of Confession (prayed aloud by all)
Gracious God, we, too, live in uncertainty. The metrics we live by have been
totally upended. New normals surround us. We, too, ache for former things as we
wonder what the future holds just like those disciples.
Our faith is shaky at times. Our spirits depleted. We are tired. We are
anxious. We give way to despair, even as we try to hold out in hope. Hear the
anguish of our cries, the pain of our hearts, and all the brokenness and confusion
with us.
Cover us with your spirit, too. May it dance upon us so to pick up our forlorn
heads. May it blow within us to give us courage to imagine new ways of being.
May the spirit give us dreams and visions, making us believe in impossible things
again. Amen.
The Silent Confession (please be seated)
The Declaration and Assurance of Forgiveness
Liturgist: Grace has not been cancelled. Love has not been cancelled. Mercy has not
been cancelled - even on this Pentecost, when we gather not in a building but in the
sanctuaries of our homes.
All: Let this grace, love and mercy dwell in us so that we may be little churches
scattered in a world hungry to know of such things no longer confined in a
building.
*The Sung Response of Praise Spirit of the Living God
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me.
*Passing the Peace of Christ, Sharing in Christ’s Welcome
Liturgist: May the spirit of peace be with you.
All: And, also with you.
(Congregation shares peace and greetings with one another.)
