    SAMPLING

    Sampling:

    Itisnotpossibleordesirabletotestalltherawmaterialorallthefinaloutputfromaproductionprocessbecauseoftimeandcostconstraints.

    Manytestsaredestructivesothattherewouldnotbeanymaterialleftafterithadbeentested.Becauseofthis,representativesamplesofthematerialaretested.

    Termsusedinsampling:

    Consignment:

    Thisisthequantityofmaterialdeliveredatthesametime.Eachconsignmentmayconsistofoneorseverallots.

    Testlotorbatch:

    Thisconsistsofallthecontainersofatextilematerialofonedefinedtypeandquality,deliveredtoonecustomeraccordingtoonedispatchnote.Thematerialispresumedtobeuniformsothatthisisthewholeofthematerialwhose properties are to be characterised by one set of tests. It can be considered to be equivalent to thestatisticalpopulation.

    Laboratorysample:

    This is thematerial thatwill be used as a basis for carrying out themeasurement in the laboratory. This isderivedbyappropriaterandomsamplingmethodsfromthetestlot.

    Testspecimen:

    Thisistheonethatisactuallyusedfortheindividualmeasurementandisderivedfromthelaboratorysample.Normally,measurementsaremadefromseveraltestspecimens.

    Package:

    Elementaryunits(whichcanbeunwound)withineachcontainerintheconsignment.Theymightbebumptop,hanks,skeins,bobbins,conesorothersupportontowhichhavebeenwoundtow,top,sliver,rovingoryarn.

    Containerorcase:

    Ashippingunitidentifiedonthedispatchnote,usuallyacarton,box,baleorothercontainerwhichmayormaynotcontainpackages.
