is going on in my head as I read.

Ship Breaker Chapter 9 notes (Sample) b/c it's a pivotal chapter!!!

p. 95 "steady stream sibilant" - alliteration"storm & salt terror" - alliteration

"The girl's hands fluttered.... as light as butterflies" - simile - shows the weak condition girl is in

Ganesha, Buddha, Kali-Mary Mercy, Christian God, Fates = jumble of religions

"Pleas spilled from her lips, a desperate trickle" - good sentence

"Her fingers slipped from his cheek like orchid petals falling" - Simile

p. 96 "I'm doing her a favor" - Pima - does she actually want to kill the girl? I thought she was a good character

p. 97 "You're just a beach rat & she's a swank ...we lose everything" - Pima - scavenge and escape more important that human life?

"This is only scavenge if she's not..." - What are the laws of scavenge in the ocean (Spanish galleons??) "Starving for salvation" - alliteration "Gold, glittered, girl's" alliteration draws attention to her fingers & the prize that makes the decision hard & easy at the same time. "Nailer struggles with his conflicting emotions"

p. 98 "Pima pressed her case ... glitter of tears..." - Pima is human

"there are no fairy tales" - grave situation of their lives

"Maybe we work oil scavenge...." - Life options

p. 99 "offering on Scavenge God's scale" - religious reference (Greek?? coins on eyes earlier in story)"oil room & Sloth" - flashback"but he hadn't been able to find the lever....." - Nailer different from the many of the people + dad" gold, girl's fingers glittered" - repetition of idea - is temptation too great???p. 100 "He'd been lucky..." - no Lucky Strike for Nailer

p. 102 " Get the damned silver" - Pima not doing this for free - (b/c of her role as crew boss??)

p. 104 "clambered, clipper's cracked furniture" - alliteration

p. 105 " gold glittering on fingers" alliteration, repetition & simile

How rich is this girl and who is she???

p. 107 "She was almost feral in her fascination..." - This girl has never known hunger, thirst or want!!

"I sure hope you know what you're going" - last sentence - Pima's regret??

Closing Thoughts

Is the gold a symbol?? Wealth, temptation?Fairy tales references - What is the purpose of fairy tales to cultures? Does Nailer see himself as a knight in shining armor?
