UNIVERSITY OF IOWASCHOOL OF MUSIC

Model studies focused on the building’s 700 seat auditorium and eastern curtain wall. Particularly challenging aspects of the design included the auditorium’s ceiling and portions of the curtain wall intended to extend out over the street. Each were explored at multiple scales and with input from LMN’s Grasshopper experts. Additionally, the auditorium’s balcony fronts were resolved via working back and forth between Rhino and mock ups as big as 3” = 1’.

In seeking to address national identity abroad, the building’s library doubles as its circulation. Cuts through multiple floor plates reveal what lies ahead, but the path is never direct. In moving upward, visitors encounter not only a wealth of knowledge via books, but a wealth of wisdom via the staff members who work adjacent to the library path. The intention is to reinforce the idea that genuine success is always tied to the betterment of one’s mind.
