In his study conducted within the framework of a dissertation project, Ralf Knöbl analyzes the language usage of pupils and teachers of a grammar school in Ulm. The data is composed of teaching interactions, interviews, interviews, interviews, and private interactions, with most of the material being collected in 2003. The main objectives of the study are the description of the variability phenomena that occur, as well as conclusions about their communicative functionality, whereby Knöbl is entitled to „combine the various methods of the quantitative and qualita-tive paradigm of sociolinguistics“ (p. 12). Correspondingly, Knöbl provides quan-titative analyzes on the variance distribution of selected variables on the phono-logical and morphophonic level (Chapter 5.2) and qualitative sequence analyzes on the interactive relevance of standard dialect alternatives (Chapter 5.3).

The work begins with a terminological foundation (Chapter 1): the terms norm, standard and dialect, as well as prestige, attitude and identity are presen-ted with clear reference to the objectives of the study, whereby the underlying standard concept deserves particular attention. For Knöbl, the conceptual dis-tinction between written and spoken standards follows from the „conceptual separation between written and spoken manifestations and norms of the stan-dard“ (p. 11). Reflections on the interchange of verbal and writtenness in „late-high German“ (p. 19, Knöbl cited Schmidt [2002]) lead ultimately to the opinion that „standard“ is not a (homogeneous and fixed) pole of the standard dialect con-tinuum, but an area of this continuum (p. 20). Consistently, Knöbl also renounces the term nonstandard and uses dialect as a contrast to the standard. In analogy to the standard, dialect is not understood as a fixed system, but as a „different system that is used and perceived as a dialect, depending on the speaker group and situation“ (p. 24). Chapter 2 presents „Approaches and Concepts for Varia-tional Research.“ First, models of linguistic variance are critically examined, in particular the notion of clearly distinguishable varieties proves to be untenable (pp. 39-40). Subsequently, correlative approaches (quantitative paradigm) and action-theoretic approaches (qualitative paradigm) are compared. At the correla-tion approach, Knöbl criticizes the „statism and homogeneity“ of the underlying concept of socio-situational context (p. 52) and pleads rightly to take into account the communicative relevance of linguistic choices (see also Henn-Memmeshei-


mer, 1997). The interpretive paradigm, in particular the work of Werner Kallmeyer and Inken Keim, represents the theoretical background of Knöbl‘s study. Knöbl sees a further need for research into the „functionality of standard dialect varia-tion, especially in institutional communication“ (p.72), for which his work und-oubtedly makes a very valuable contribution.

The present readable monograph by Katrin Schmitz, published in a habilitation thesis, deals with the phenomena of the grammatical passive (expressions) and the (lexical) unackusativity with regard to Spanish, Italian and French, which are often discussed in the research literature in different theoretical approaches. The author considers passivation and unaccusativity as an interactive phenomenon complex and examines it from a comparative both synchronous and diachronic perspective, whereby the analysis is based on theory (especially in the context of the theory of the generative lexicon) and data-based. The preface of the author is followed by a comprehensive introductory part (pp. 9-43), which first deals with the objectives of the thesis. Apart from studying the general interplay of lexicon and syntax, the synchronous and diachronic relationship between (lexical) ) Unakkusativity and (syntactic) passive in the studied languages. In the context of the question, the question as to whether or not the question of the development of the passive in the Germanic language of Abraham (2006a, b) and Sodaham.
