    As you 0now/ a good education gies your child the best possible start in life. Agood education helps young people to obtain secure employment and deelopinto mature and responsible citi2ens. The purpose of the Education (Welfare) Act!!! is to encourage regular school attendance and participation in educationand training for as long as possible. It is desirable that eery child stays in school

    and completes the "eaing 3erti4cate.

    5nder the law/ eery child must attend school regularly up to si6teen years of ageor complete at least three years education in a post primary school whicheercomes later. The %ational Educational Welfare &oard (%EW&) was established tosupport school attendance and follow up on children who are not attending schoolregularly.

    As a parent, you must let the school know if your child is absent and the reasonwhy. It is school policy that reasons must be given in writing. The school willnotify the National Educational Welfare oard if a child is absent for !" days ormore or where the absence gives rise to concern.

    If your child is sick or is absent for other good reasons, no action will be taken bythe NEW. #owever, if there is concern about your child$s attendance at schoolor about the reasons given, you may be visited by an Educational Welfare %&cerwho will discuss your child$s education with you. The %&cer will work with youand take full account of the circumstances of the child and the family before

    deciding what further action is necessary to ensure that the child receives his'herentitlement to an education.
