Sample Entrance Test for

CR700 (BA in Theatre & Drama Studies)    

   

“A very exciting future awaits everybody who is or will be part of the Cork School of Music”

The Entrance Test has 3 parts:

§ Group Drama Workshop (42%) § Audition & Interview (50%) § Written Paper (8%)

Group Drama Workshop Each candidate participates in a group drama workshop, lasting 45 minutes. Candidates will be asked to follow a series of directions and to respond to a range of suggestions and stimuli provided by the external workshop facilitator. Candidates’ contributions in the workshop will be observed and assessed by staff members. Candidates are encouraged to participate as freely and as spontaneously as possible. Please ensure you wear comfortable and appropriate clothing - i.e. clothing that will allow for free and flexible movement. Audition & Interview Candidates must prepare a three- to four-minute monologue from a published play of their choice, which they will perform within an individual audition/interview. Candidates will also perform a previously unseen text presented to them on the day. As part of the audition/interview. applicants will be given the opportunity to discuss their audition piece, their interest in Theatre & Drama studies, and their experience within the area to date.  Written Paper Candidates will complete a brief written exercise on an unprepared theatre topic - see sample questions below If any further information is required, please email [email protected] or ring the CSM’s Administrator (021-4807307)

Sample Written Paper (45 minutes)

Answer ONE of the following questions. Your answer should be no longer than 400 words. • “Drama benefits the individual in many ways.” Discuss. • Choose a character you have played and describe the various methods you used to prepare for

the role. (You may refer to your audition piece in your answer.) • “Theatre is irrelevant to most of the population.” Discuss. • “If we can have fun and not worry about being judged, we can be more creative.” Discuss.
