Introduction We have heard of Ramayana many times and
from many authors. Valmiki was first to write
Ramayana. Lord Brahma ordered him to write
seeing his mastery over Shastras and poetic skills.
He was so knowledgeable and powerful that he
could recall the each incident of Ramayana as if
he had seen visually. The Ramayana is translated
in many languages by several scholars explaining
beautifully. Ramayana contains many morals,
ethics, shastras that anyone would inspire out of
it. Rama as a son, husband, friend, king, warrior,
brother, was perfect in each and every role.
Ramayana is an epic which teaches a man to lead
a perfect life. The places mentioned in this epic
exist even today. Chanting Rama’s name would
solve various problems of our life.

This book “Visual Ramayana” inspired me
after reading this holy book. Initially I had no
intention of making this as a book, I just wanted
to paint one as a hobby. As it came up well, I
followed with one after the other. After
completing 22 paintings covering the incidents, I
added text explaining each image and intended to
publish with my wife’s encouragement. This book
is especially designed for children to understand
the glory of Lord Sri Rama.

This book is entirely dedicated to my parents who
made me to fall in love with Ramayana, my wife
who dedicated her time in support to write this
book and the holy feet of God Sri Rama.

1 Puthrakameshti yagna
Around 100 million years ago in Threthayuga,
there lived a king Dasharatha, belonging to great
dynasty called Ikshvaku, where his forefathers
were legends, namely Aja, Raghu and Dileepa.
Like his ancestors he was known for his valour,
generosity, and administrative skills. Under his
kingdom, people lived happily. He had three
queens but no children. For many years he
performed various worships to God but could not
get children. Sage Valmiki advised Dasharatha to
do Putrakameshti yagna, which is nothing but a
worship to God to get a child boon. This
Puthrakameshti yagna is referred from Atharvana
Veda. During this event, Gods were impressed by

this yagna and presented a bowl of Payasam to
Dasharatha, and asked him to distribute to his
wives, who thereby would be blessed with a child.
Meanwhile there was panic among the sages
and other civilians from earth, Devathas from
heaven, being tormented by a very powerful
demon by name Ravana. They approached Lord
Brahma for help to eliminate him, who thereby
with others requested Lord Vishnu to be born to
Dasharatha as boon for Puthrakameshti yagna.
Lord Vishnu decided to incarnate himself as
Dasharatha’s son Rama and destroy the evil force
Ravana.

2 Birth of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha
and Shathrugna
Soon after the queens of Dasharatha’s
Puthrakameshti yagna, they got conceived. Queen
Kausalya first gave birth to Rama. He was born
on April 14th
, this is as per calculation referred
from book Rama Kala Nirnaya by Varadaraja
Thirumale. At the time of his birth 5 planets were
in exalted position. Meaning 5 planets giving full
fruit to Rama’s horoscope according to Vedic
astrology. Based on planetary position at the time
of birth a person’s fate is decided. Usually a
person would have one or two planets in exalted
position and lead a successful life. God Vishnu

decided to be born as Rama with such a nice
calculation.
Few months later other queens of Dasharatha
gave birth. Sumithra to Laxmana and Shathrugna,
Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharatha. Laxmana is said
to be Adhisesha avatar. Usually whenever Lord
Vishnu takes avatar, Adisesha the gaint serpent
takes avatar as his brother, like Balarama was
born as brother to Krishna in Dwaparayuga.
The four princes of Ayodhya were given good
education like Vyakarna (Sanskrit grammar),
Vedas, mantras, shastras and skills to deal with
weapons.

3 Vishwamithra praising Lord Rama
Sage Vishwamithra seeks help of Rama to help
fight against demons who were obstructing their
prayers and yagna. King Dasharatha hesitates to
send his son, as he is too young. Vishwamithra
ensures his safety and also teaches special skills
and techniques in fighting with bow and arrow
(Dhanurvidya)
On an early morning Vishwamithra is attracted
by pleasant appearance of Rama while sleeping
and sang the song
“Kausalya Supraja Rama purva Sandhya
pravarthethe. Uthishta narashardoola Karthavyam
daivamanhikam”

Vishwamithra knew Rama was not an
ordinary person. He trusted his abilities. The sage
himself could have fought and won against
demons, but his spiritual powers would be
exhausted and he has to perform penance again to
regain powers.

4 Rama protecting the yagam
Sage Vishwamithra thus begins the yagna ritual
along with his fellow sages. The ritual is
conducted for 6 days and nights. Rama and
Lakshmana built a roof of arrows over the yagna
which would prevent the demons to intervene.
The demons Maricha and Subahu were having
magical powers that were used to cause harm to
civilians, priests and sages. On the last day of the
ritual, they came to disturb and poured blood over
the sacred fire. The blood could not penetrate the
roof built by Rama. Rama shot a bunch of arrows
and killed Subahu. Maricha ran away as Rama
was too strong to fight against.
