For people who love cars, the all new 2.2 litre diesel XF, is a total surprise for its value and performance.

I checked with the advertisement from Melbourne City Jaguar, down in Docklands. The 3.0 litre V6 Diesel is still available. However, the new 2.2 litre straight four diesel engine has a smaller capacity, but output is still achieving a handsome 190kW at 3,500rpm and 420Nm at just 2,000rpm. Most people would think that this is the price beater with less power and comes with a naked body shell. The answer is definitely a screaming “No”.

Surely, the entrance price of the all new XF 2.2litre diesel is just $84,990 drive-away priced, across Australia. Is it really true that less is best? I doubted, normally, you pay what you get.

The record holder of the fastest sprints still belongs to the high performance

hero car XFR 5.0litre V8 for a mere 4.9seconds. On the other hand, the new 2.2 litre diesel holds another record for being the most frugal car in the entire Jaguar history with a combined city and country driving cycle of just 5.4litre per 100kms.

The 2.2 litre Diesel also comes with a state of the art advance Stop/Start system that not only saves fuel here and there, it also ensure that it doesn’t disrupt your love of instantity, responsiveness motoring from a Jaguar sports sedan.

Undoubtedly, the new 2.2litre diesel has been seen in a couple of Land Rover, such as the new Defender and Freelander 2. But Jaguar took great efforts to customize it into an eager and vibrant engine with all the Jaguar sports car attributes.

2.2 Litre Turbo Diesel

The car as always has gone through a couple of updates inside out, the interior looks refreshing with leather and wood plus auto open air-con louver. Obviously it also comes with that unique Jaguar “James Bond style” pop up gear select. As for the exterior, the most attractive changes was the “J blade” day time running lights, that makes the driver in front of you thought that you must be driving a massive limousine.

However, what made this road test becoming a total surprise was the new partnership shared intimately between its 2.2 litre diesel engine and the all new 8 speed ZF automatic gear box. The engine has gone through a massive tweed and special treatment was given to the noise/vibration/harshness (NVH) department. Its massive power and brutal torque are available at a extremely low rev range. All we can say, is that, it is that dynamic partnership that makes the 2.2 litre Diesel an exciting and great car to drive

The results are staggering. You have to sit with me or dare to drive the car on the same road again before you could believe what we have experienced at the first drive program in Northern NSW and Southern Queensland

The roads there have a combination of highway cruising, beaten twisty country or well worned tarmac roads with scattered pot holes here and there. So you get the picture.

At first, we drove pass some city highway in the normal “D” driving gear. It responded very well. We were happy and when we pressed gently onto the throttle, the car just sprinted and remained silky smooth, quiet and just seems to be travelling along so effortlessly.

While we had a chance to going through some second class country roads, we noticed that the car could do better. Like always, when we came to a long stretches of open road, we accelerated harshly. We felt that it has an endless feed of both torque and power, but discounted any annoying turbo lag. The car seems to be very happy at that certain high speed. Wind, engine and tyre noises were minimal. It was so quiet that we were totally convinced that the car wasn’t travelling at that high speed at all.

While it was my turn to drive the car after lunch, I had a good stretch of Alpine style country road. I thought that this type of road should be best tackled by a Land Rover Freelander 2. I came across some very winding, tight and twisty road. Usually, I will use the “D” drive, applying a gentle brake before the corner, then accelerate in the middle of the bend and wait for the power to come back on in a brief moment.

Instead of waiting a few split mini-seconds, I changed my mind. I used the paddle shifts at the back of the steering column instead. Trying to tackle the tight corner while maximizing both speed and ensuring the safety for my co-pilot, I found the paddle shift works extremely well with the 8 speed automatic gear box. The gear box responded faithfully with any harsh demand of multiple down shifting while coping with the massive torque that powers the car. The steering is precise, disregarding the size of the mid / large XF. The driving experience is full of fun, excitement and surprises.

The whole setting up of the car is so vital in carrying across the driver’s skill and combine with the ability of the car, allowing the driver to enjoy unprecedented driving entertainment by having the ultimate total control of the

car. It just works seamlessly disregarding both speed and road conditions. The excitement part is like driving a rally sports sedan on steroid or just like a mad roller coaster. Surely, you can enjoy your British style of relax cruising, it is your choice.

I came across a couple of moments that I thought I might have nearly put the car into risk or just not driving as smoothly as I intended. However, the dynamic chassis control system, ensuring the wheels and the suspension works extremely well with the steering, gear box, engine and brakes. Or in short, it undoubtedly saved itself. It is not about my skill or incompetency. It is about how far I would like to take on the challenge or just simply racing out of my own comfort zone.

I strongly believe, the whole set up of this highly under prized great car, will just leaves the flood gate wide open for people who have never considered buying a British Jaguar, as it is a fine piece of valuable sporting equipment that you definitely don’t want to miss out.

Just try it, if possible drive like what I did, obviously the positives. You will know what I mean. It is just that good.
