children have predominantly mild or asymptomatic infection and a better prognosis compared to adults, those with co-morbid health conditions like Type-I diabetes, chronic cardiopulmonary disease or immune-compromised states may be at higher risk.

While there are no medications to cure COVID-19, some prophylactic

measures can help boost a child’s immunity and make the natural defenses as strong as possible. The oft-quoted adage, prevention is better than cure, cannot be more relevant in these times. The Ministry of AYUSH has issued an advisory on various immunity-enhancing steps for children from the time-tested approaches of the traditional systems.

Prophylactic measures based on yoga guidelines

In general, the yogic practices help in enhancing the lung functions, cardio-vascular endurance, modulating immune system and reducing psychological stress.

Some general guidelines for the practice of yoga as per age group:1. 5 years could be considered as an ideal age to start

yoga.

2. 5-10 years of age should focus more on asanas, mantra chanting and yogic games with small components of simple pranayama.

3. As the age advances, asanas can be maintained for longer time (15-30 seconds) and more of fast and slow breathing techniques and meditation can be added.

A few words of caution before beginning of yoga practice by children:1. Yoga practice by children should always be under

the supervision of a trained yoga expert. Further, the presence of a parent is recommended for the children in the age of 5-10 years.

2. Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach. A minimum of 2 hours gap after breakfast and 3 hours gap after a full meal is recommended before the practice of yoga.

3. Keep away sharp objects and heavy furniture from the site of yoga practice.

4. Use a proper yoga mat to prevent falls.

Doctors Day: Hon’ble PM urges IMA to take up more studies on yoga

IN NEWS

Deccan Herald, a prominent news daily, carried an article on online yoga sessions conducted by the Department of Integrative Medicine, NIMHANS, billing them as global hit during COVID-19 pandamic.

NIMHANS’ study on yoga and depression cited in top publicationsThe research conducted at NIMHANS assessing the therapeutic effects of Yoga in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) found that Yoga along with standard antidepressant treatment can improve clinical response in patients with MDD and can also

bring about earlier remission. In addition, yoga produces measurable biological changes which give clues to its mechanism of action. The study was led by Dr. Muralidharan Kesavan, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS and was supported

under the ‘Science and Technology of Yoga and Meditation (SATYAM)’ Programme of the Department of Science and Technology, GOI. The findings have been published in the Press Information Bureau in the context of International Yoga day.

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi addressed the nation on 1st July, on Doctors’ day which is celebrated in the memory of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. He said the way Indian doctors have served the nation and its people in the past one and half years since the advent of the pandemic in the country has set an example for the world and also thanked the medical fraternity on behalf of people of India. He also praised the medical fraternity for their role

in promoting yoga and explained how yoga including Pranayama has promoted positive health and provided assistance in treating post COVID complications. He urged the doctors to conduct more evidence-based studies on Yoga as intervention, as such studies have garnered appreciation from all over the world. Further, he requested the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to take it up as a mission and conduct more evidence based yoga studies in a very scientific manner, so that the results of these studies can be published in International Journals which will further lead to the popularization and promotion of yoga. In the end, he stated that the dedication and service of the Indian doctors will help in fulfilling and achieving

the message shared in “Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” mantra and support the nation in winning its war against COVID.

In the last few decades, many in the medical fraternity were of the view that we have won the race against communicable diseases and this led to the shift in focus of attention towards effective dealing with non-communicable diseases. But the unprecedented outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused by SARS-COVID 2 virus shook this notion and affected mankind in all possible ways taking a toll on health, well-being and even life. To combat the tremendous burden on the healthcare workforce in our country, the Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy (CCRYN), Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi took a commendable initiative to strengthen our health care system by utilizing our rich source of traditional knowledge and implementing Integrative medicine for the effective & efficient management of this crisis situation. They developed a protocol based on Yoga, Naturopathy and Mental Health Counselling for ‘Psychosocial Rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients’ and an online training program (workshop) in

collaboration with various experts from the field of Psychology, Psychiatry, Yoga & Naturopathy to educate BNYS doctors on management of patients with Covid-19. The protocol was developed in collaboration with experts from the Department of Integrative Medicine and Department of Psychiatric Social work, NIMHANS, Bengaluru and S-VYASA University, Bengaluru. It was released on 23rd April followed by an online workshop. The program aimed at equipping BNYS doctors with the complete knowledge about COVID-19 including its epidemiology, disease course, how to screen associated distress and psychological sequelae and management of the same through Yoga and Naturopathy approaches. Further, mental health being a vital consideration for effective recovery from COVID 19 pandemic, mental health counselling was also integrated into the program. Following members were instrumental in preparation of this manual: Dr. Hemant Bhargav, Assistant Professor (Yoga) and Dr. Sumana V, Research

Associate, DST-SATYAM project from Department of Integrative Medicine, Dr. Aarti Jagannathan, Associate Professor, and D. Sreekanth Nair, PhD scholar from Department of Psychiatric Social Work, NIMHANS, Dr. Swathi P S, Assistant Professor and Dr. Apar Avinash Saoji, Principal of the School of Yoga and Naturopathic Medicine, S-VYASA Yoga University. Dr. H R Nagendra, Chancellor, S-VYASA University, Bengaluru released this manual in presence of Dr. Raghavendra Rao, Director, CCRYN, Dr. B N Gangadhar, Former Director, NIMHANS & President, Ethics and Medical Registration Board, National Medical Council, Shri P N Ranjit Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India and Dr. Shivarama Varambally, Professor of Psychiatry and I/c Head, Department of Integrative Medicine.
