HISTORY Founded by William the Conqueror during the 11th

century with the building of two abbeys and a castle in the center of the town.Ladies’ Abbey founded in 1060Men’s Abbey founded in 1063

Throughout history, Caen was fought over by France and England many times.

85% was destroyed in World War II during the fighting.Caen was the main sight of the Battle of Normandy.

It has now been rebuilt.There are now many museums set up there as well as a

park and a botanical garden.

Seafood: Normandy is famous for its seafood.

○ About one in every three oysters eaten in France comes from Normandy.

○ It is the number one place for scallop fishing.Produces between 50% and 75% of France’s

scallops.

○ Normandy produces 25% to 30% of France’s mussels

Normandy also has many apple-based alcoholic beverages.○ Examples:

Calvados:- Normandy’s famous apple brandy

Pommeau:- A mixture of cider, apple juice, and Calvados

Also serves many apple-based desserts.○ Their most popular dessert is tarte aux pomme (apple

pie).

PARC FLORAL DE LA COLLINE AUX OISEAUX Parc floral de la Colline aux Oiseaux is a

floral park on the birds hill. It’s near the Mémorial Museum. It is a vast site of landscaped gardens

and floral displays. It offers pleasant walks among many gardens including a rose garden.

I would love to go there because it is extremely pretty. (pictures on next slide)

MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS It is a Fine Arts Museum that was built at

the heart of William the Conqueror’s castle.

It is one of the most important buildings in France for 16th and 17th century European painting (France, Italy, Flanders, and Holland).

WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR 1027: William was born. 1035: He became the Duke of Normandy 1047: He decided to make Caen a strategic

site and main place of residence. 1050: William married Matilda of Flanders. 1060: Ladies’ Abbey founded in Caen. 1063: Men’s Abbey founded in Caen. 1066: Won the Battle of Hastings and became

known as “the Conqueror”. 1087: William died.
