MANIFESTOThe book jackets I chose to create are a set of fictional autobiographies about three of the most famous basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. Each book jacket is inspired by an iconic jersey from the teams these players competed on. The “Jordan” book jacket uses typography inspired by the cursive writing used to spell Chicago on the Chicago Bulls jersey during the 1985/1986 season. I was initially going to use Jordan’s first and last name, but I wanted the front cover to stay minimal and let the colour really stand out. Underneath the Jordan typography is Jordan’s well known “Jumpman” logo which is recognised world wide, I also used a drop shadow on both the Jordan typohraphy and Jumpman logo to give the feeling of floating on air, as Michael Jordan was known for his high flying slam dunks. For most of the rest of the text I used the font ‘American Typewriter’ as it gave the jacket an “old school” feel. The spine features the same typography used on the front of the book along with my name blown up bigger and also the publishers logo which I created. The back of the jacket has a circle made up of the words “MICHAEL JORDAN 23” to represent a basketball. Inside the circle, the number Jordan made famous, number 23, was also sketched and vectorised to give the affect of the back of a jersey and to also fill in the ball. To finish the ball off I used a Jordan quote and also created 6 circles to represent the amount of NBA championship rings he won with the years in which he won them written underneath in italicised ‘Lucida Handwriting’ font. This gave it a prestigious look and feel. I then created a basketball hoop and net vector in illustrator to accompany the ball style typography layout. The “Kobe” and “LeBron” jackets were inspired by the “Jordan” jacket. Both followed the same layout and had the same meanings behind the various elements.
