We met Maria Eugenia in an isolated community called San Lorenzo along the Mamoré River that separates Bolivia’s northern bor-

der from Brazil. Her father is the community health worker and after helping us with our clinic he quietly asked if we could see his daughter. Of course we obliged, but my heart sank as he told of the progressive paralysis of her legs for no apparent reason. He had scraped together money to take her to La Paz—a several day trip—where he was told nothing could be done for her. Back in San Lorenzo, they had little hope.

After examining her, we suspected a vascular tumor was affecting her spine, but could not truly make diagnosis under those conditions. We told her father if he would get her to Santa Cruz we would get a diagnosis, although we could not promise a cure.

One year later, SAM missionary Dr. Placido Mercado received a phone call. It was Maria Eugenia’s father. He had brought his daughter to Santa Cruz and was hoping we would keep our promise. To get to Santa Cruz from San Lorenzo, it takes days navigating the rivers in the Amazon Basin by boat and then the well-worn Bolivian highways by bus.

We kept our promise. The diagnosis was a vascular malformation applying pressure to her spine. We spoke with surgeons in Bolivia and Brazil. No one had the experience neces-sary to operate. We started calling people in North America and finally Baptist Hospital in Miami responded. Maria Eugenia, accompanied by her mother and SAM missionary Bev Smith, left for the US.

The specialized surgeons expressed little hope of improvement, but spoke of the danger of death without surgery because of the progressive ascending paralysis. The surgeons did their work; we are so grateful they were willing to try. Amazingly, after surgery, Maria Eu-genia was able to take her first steps in over three years. She continues physical therapy and regains the strength in her legs each day.

We praise God for the century of faithful service He has given to South America Mission. We celebrate God’s past faithfulness and joyfully commit to fulfilling His

vision for us: Multiplied dynamic churches spread across South America transforming com-munities by embodying the Kingdom of God. Everything we do is done towards this end.

At our core is a group of 100 missionaries making significant sacrifices to see the church of Jesus Christ grow as lives are transformed in South America. Our partners, both indi-viduals and churches demonstrating their concern for God’s global purposes, make it pos-sible for us to Mobilize, Lead and Equip a very dedicated team serving a continent away.

Doing more life-transforming work in South America is our aim. We can only accomplish this in partnership with you. Every prayer you offer makes a difference. Every encourag-ing word. Every financial gift. They enable us to engage more candidates for missionary service, to lead a vision-driven mission onward and upward, and to equip missionaries to be effective as God’s redemptive agents on earth.

Bolivia—iNdiGeNous aNd rural Medical outreach

help ProvideMedical anddental care to the indigenousand rural Poor.

Each year SAM missionaries visit remote villages along the rivers in the Beni depart-ment of northern Bolivia. We sail for 10 days down several rivers, able to visit at most

only two villages per day, some days none when the villages are longer distances apart. The people seen and cared for say that months go by and no one comes. No one coming means that in most cases there is no gospel proclamation, no announcing of hope and healing.

We spend time with and take medical care to the people of these villages as often as possible, with the resources God gives us. We do it so that no one will say “no one comes” anymore, so that felt needs will be met and God’s redeeming passion for the world will be embodied to transform lives.

We embody this passion by holding medical clinics administered by our missionary doctors and nurses. Basic and regular treatment of medical conditions, which some-times requires minor surgical procedures, brings physical relief and healing that creates a platform to talk about the complete healing of the soul that God has provided in Jesus. We can provide medical care in the villages for only $1000 per trip, about $2 per patient. Also, a newer, more modern boat with a more efficient engine would afford more time on the river reaching more people; a reasonable budget for purchasing a boat is $50,000.

In Bolivia, the Center for Integral Theological Education trains the working-class men and women in the urban center of Santa Cruz to be leaders in the church. In Brazil, the

Ammi Training Center serves indigenous people from the over 340 tribal groups of this great country. To the north in Colombia, CENfOW is a church leadership development center for the Wayuu people who can claim only one pastor for every 45,000 Wayuu. In Peru, the Ashaninka Bible Institute is instrumental in training leaders for the many small churches that are springing up among this people group of 30,000. In Paraguay, SAM helps facilitate training for church leaders eager to engage their congregations in a church-based theological education program called ETBIL.

We have found that our ministry is most effective when we work alongside Godly leaders, encouraging the formation of a heart for their people and a vision for their communities.

The cost of preparing Godly leaders for the church in places like the Amazon Jungle or the coastal desert of Colombia is almost insignificant compared to North American standards. for just $50 per month, or $600 per year, we can provide Bible-based leadership training to a student whose heart is set on transforming the world for Christ.

Estimates state that approximately 1,100 unborn babies die each day in Peru, and 800 mothers die annually due to complications.

Heartbeats of Hope is only the 7th crisis pregnancy center in the entire country of Peru (population 30,000,000) and the first in the jungle region as Pucallpa sits on the banks of the Ucayali River, the headwaters of the Amazon. With proper volunteer training, needed medical supplies and diagnostic equipment, we can help to literally save lives and impact young families with the message of hope found in Christ.

spiritualvitality.

South America Mission remains committed to seeing thousands of local communities of the redeemed making disciples in a way that fulfills Jesus’ Great Commission.

saM 2020 is the name we have given to our honest and careful process of renewal—a pro-cess that will allow us to honor God by being available for His purposes in us. Key to this renewal is an understanding: we are who we are because of who Jesus is first and foremost.

Our efforts through saM 2020 will be given to enriching our spiritual vitality, assessing our present effectiveness, goals and needs as well as asking God to show us what more He would have us do. We will invest in responding to our assessments and dreams by better equipping the SAM missionary team, by improving how we resource our core strategies and ministries and by making changes that respond to the realities of our context.

We will coordinate this renewal across multiple countries and with over 100 missionaries in South America. We need materials and resources that guide us through the renewal process, ground our spiritual vitality, encourage us to dream, and equip us to run the race to see God’s vision become reality.

i had no idea that his name was lenilson Pereira da Silva. All anyone ever called him was “Tequila”. It was pretty obvious why. No matter the time,

day or night, I never saw him when he wasn’t inebriated. His wife and two sons were embar-rassed by his behavior but seemed unable to convince him to do anything about it.

Then, when we finally began to have church services in the community with our ministry partner Pastor Amós, Lenilson appeared. Still under the influence of alcohol, he would sit on the back row of the church and weep. We were all saddened by his struggle with alcohol but encouraged that he was seeking the Lord in his moment of greatest need.

One day, as I was on my way to a Bible study in the community, I ran into Lenilson on the path. He asked if I could come by and visit him at his house when I was done. I stopped by Lenilson’s house, curious as to the reason for the invitation while remaining hopeful that we could have a meaningful conversation about his situation. When I arrived I was greeted by Lenilson and his wife, Eliane, and asked to come in and sit down. As I did, Lenilson began to open up to me that he was tired of living a life dominated by alcohol and wanted to know

if I would be willing to help him regain his life and his dignity. I assured him that I would do what I could for him and asked if I could pray for him and his family. He agreed, so the three of us stood up, held hands, and we began to pray. I prayed that God would make His presence known in Lenilson’s life and home and give him the strength to overcome his addiction. I prayed that he would understand that he needed to regain his life so that he could give it away again, this time to God.

After a bit of research I was able to discover that there is a free alcoholism treatment facility near my apartment. I spoke directly with the doctor in charge of the facility, and went with Lenilson one day to help communicate the situation to the doctor. Lenilson was accepted into the program and began his treatment that very day. That was July, 2010, and to this day Lenil-son has not had another drink of alcohol. He continues his treatment one day a week and is currently sending out resumes to return to the ranks of the employed.

There is one more important part to this story. In August, 2010, about six weeks after Le-nilson began his alcoholism treatment, he arrived at church for our Thursday evening service. When Lenilson arrived I was already seated at the front with Pastor Amós, but when I saw him enter I went to greet him and shake his hand. He was in dress pants, a nice knit shirt, dress shoes and was even wearing cologne. At the end of the service when Pastor Amós asked if anyone wanted to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, Lenilson came down to the front of the church. I teared up as Lenilson publicly professed his faith for the first time.

When the service concluded a person in attendance came to me, obviously confused. By the way I had greeted Lenilson at the beginning of the service this person assumed that Le-nilson was a pastor or church elder, but then he came down to the altar to accept Christ at the end of the service? Who was he? I simply said, “His name is Lenilson, but you used to know him as ‘Tequila’”. —recounted by Craig Delille, SAM Missionary in Brazil

Craig and Mary Delille walked through frei Damião, a forgotten section of Dois Uni-dos, Brazil, and knew right away their calling to provide adequate housing to replace

the patch-work tin and tarp-covered homes in which many families were living. They soon learned that behind the thin veils of homes were other desperate needs like food and literacy training. Most notably, there was the need to know that God’s love extends to every corner of this world, especially to the seemingly forgotten places.

In partnership with local churches, our desire is to respond to the felt needs we encounter in South America, demonstrating God’s heart for the poor in their local communities.

SAM’s Redemptive Outreach in Dois Unidos provides 50 food baskets every two weeks for families who struggle to make ends meet. We are also building small but safe and secure houses for $3500 per house—$2500 for materials and $1000 for labor.

A gift of $25 buys a food basket that gives necessary sustenance —and a big dose of hope. A gift of $250 is like placing a foundational brick in one of the new houses in Dois Unidos. You can make an immediate impact with gifts to this ministry in Brazil.

CONPLEI 2012 will bring together in one location over four days an unprecedented num-ber of evangelical indigenous leaders. More than 3,000 will gather to propel the CONPLEI movement forward as it continues to grow the church among the 340 tribal groups of Brazil. Still, today, there are over 100 tribal groups in the jungles with no gospel witness.

As an expression of the strategic alliance between CONPLEI and South America Mission, Ammi, where many of the indigenous pastors have been trained, will host the event. This will be a massive undertaking and only possible as God brings the necessary resources together. Total costs for one day of CONPLEI 2012 are $32,500. The foundation for effective cross-cultural ministry—meaningful relationships—is stronger when we reach a level of intimacy that comes as we speak into each others

lives using a shared language that articulates the deepest longings of the heart and soul. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit enabled the apostles to speak in all the languages of those inJerusalem who were from every nation under heaven (Acts 2:4-6), honoring the mother tongues and making a statement that the articulation of the Gospel truth would be a multi-lingual endeavor capable of reaching all people.

SAM missionaries coordinate and help run The English Village, which teaches English as a second language, but the goal of the school is more fundamental. for example, Latin Americans are being mobilized cross-culturally to places like India. The English Village aims to instill educational principles so that learning any language, like Hindi (the official language of India), is easier, allowing missionaries to reach their country of service sooner where they can intimately engage a diverse world with the Gospel truth.

This is so important to the process of mobilizing missionaries and being effective in minis-try. for just $250, you can send a missionary to a two-week English Village in Bolivia. $25 buys materials for a missionary to study and learn a new language.

In each context of ministry in South America, we realize the importance of capturing the hearts and minds of children for Christ. That is why missionaries like frank and

Luz Zaijek in Gaira, Colombia, lead a thriving AWANA ministry in partnership with the local church. Or why the Children’s Ministry Team of Bolivia holds day camps for Ayoré children and weekend “Princess” conferences for girls discovering their identities in Christ. Or why missionary Matthew Morrison in Paraguay puts structuring a meaningful Children’s Ministry in local churches at the top of his priority list.

Children are often the most receptive to God’s love, but they are also the most vulner-able to believing that the brokenness they experience is all they can ever expect out of the life given to them. We need to teach them, to show them the true love and wholeness in Christ and how the experience of Christ’s love changes everything.

You can help us teach the children with small $10 and $20 gifts that enable us to buy mate-rials and supplies to carry out day camps and weekend conferences where the children come to learn about Christ and see the love of Christ lived out in the lives of missionaries.

Good News of God’s Great work throuGh saMair

I was out walking our small dog the other eve-ning…it had been a hectic day for David. The

plane that was due for a routine inspection had come in late so the inspection didn’t start until about 11am. They were well into the inspection

when David took a call for an emergency flight. A little girl had been impaled by a tree branch. We didn’t know how serious the injury was or the size of the branch but nonethe-less, this was an emergency. David went to his colleague Craig and asked, “How late can you leave out of here and still get back before sunset?” Craig told him they would have to leave by 4:30pm to be back by 5:45pm. David’s response, “I will do everything in my power to get this plane put back together by 4:30!” Time was not on David’s side but this little one needed help. We couldn’t use the float plane for this location and the other land plane was torn apart for a 10,000-hour inspection.

So as I was out walking our small dog that afternoon, first I heard the plane, then I saw it circling overhead for the approach to land. I shook my head in wonder that it was up there flying at all. I couldn’t believe it. Even now tears come to my eyes; this is why we are here and I am so thankful. One day it’s a little girl with a branch broken off in her stomach, an-other day it’s flying missionaries to their tribal work location in the jungle, another day it’s bringing in Peruvian national pastors for training, and the list goes on and on. We are here to support the work of God’s church growing and glorifying, and we do it through aviation.

That day made a difference in this little girl’s life. David got the plane airworthy in order to meet the emergency. I watched the plane until it went from my view but I could still hear it taxi into our hangar. Our team of aviation guys succeeded and David was a part of it. He’s not on the front lines flying, but his job as a mechanic is God’s perfect place for him. Craig, his colleague, commented to our Peruvian friends later that night how David had “whipped that plane together” so he could fly by 4:30.

Pray for this little girl. She had surgery that night. The stick was not that big in diameter but it had indeed broken off in her abdomen. We pray that she will know the love of Christ as we point her to Him by caring for her, bringing her to a place of safety and healing, bring-ing the gospel to life for her. Pray for the ministry of SAMAIR, that as we facilitate encoun-ters like this through aviation, that the values of God’s Kingdom will be embodied and lives transformed as a result. —recounted by Jan Kooistra, Missionary in Peru
