CROHNS DISEASEULCERATIVE COLITIS Any part of the alimentary canal Mainly intestines Usually affects the terminal part of the small intestine and the anus Does not affect any area outside the intestines Located in the colon (colitis)

Exact cause is unknown Could be influenced by: Environment Diet Blood vessel abnormalities Theories include Genetics, it does seem to run in families Immune system overreacting to a virus or bacterial infection

Diagnosis A very difficult disease to diagnose Physical Exam: -visual examination (pains, achesetc) Colonoscopy: -endoscope goes through the alimentary canal

Continued Barium X-ray: -swallow chemical -while scientist observe through an X-ray whether or not there is inflammation or narrowing. Blood Tests: -detect anaemia -least invasive -test show C-reactive proteins

Prevention/Treatment No cure However, you can alter the inflammation to keep them some what controlled: 1. Medication 2. Physical Changes 3. Surgery only when there is a blockade in the intestine

Causes of Ulcerative Colitis The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. People with this condition have problems with the immune system Stress and certain foods can trigger symptoms, but they do not cause ulcerative colitis.

Symptoms Abdominal pain and cramping or abdominal sounds (gurgling etc.) Rectal pain Frequent or sporadic Diarrhea Nausea and vomiting Weight loss also may be a symptom

Diagnosis Colonoscopy is often used to diagnose Physical exam also used Fairly easy to diagnose if symptoms are present

Treatment PPatient can be treated with anything from a change in diet to surgery FFor more severe cases medication is often prescribed IIf medication does not work surgery can be carried out
