Salisbury Elementary School’s Summer Reading Challenge June 11 – August 19, 2017 Reading Calendars and Activities due by Thursday, August 31 Dear Families, Reading and writing are two life skills that are essential to the academic growth and success of every child. Research has shown, time and again, that the best predictor of reading achievement is the amount of time that a student spends reading. The more a child reads, the more success that a child will have. Research has also proven that ALL students, if they do not read or write over the summer, are likely to lose important reading growth. Don’t let your child slide this summer!! What can you do to help? READ! And Read S’MORE! And Then S’MORE! Join us in our school-wide Summer Reading Challenge. How? It’s easy. Each grade level will have different reading goals. Learners and parents will record the minutes read each week and complete the activities. If you support your child in completing the Summer Reading Challenge, you will have given your child the gift of reading! The requirements for the challenge are on the back. Salisbury’s Summer Reading Challenge will run for a total of 10 weeks. Our expectation is that learners who complete at least 8 weeks of the reading calendar will be eligible for prizes. Learners who reach the S’more level will be invited to participate in a special celebration that includes an ice cream party and games. All Reading Calendars and activities must be returned by Thursday, August 31. Please return activities in the envelope provided. Summer Reading Challenge Activities Please refer to the chart below to see your child’s summer reading goals:

Grade Total minutes per week

Entering First Grade 50

Entering Second Grade 50

Entering Third Grade 75

Entering Fourth Grade 75

Entering Fifth Grade 100

Entering Sixth Grade 100

Reading time can be accumulated in different ways:

o Silent reading for those who can read alone o The child reading to an adult o An adult reading to a child o Listening to an audio book o Reading a book on an electronic device (kindle, iPad, etc.) o KidBiz 3000 - 40 Activity Challenge (Gr. 3-5)

Earning Prizes

Three levels will be awarded:

1. S’more - learners who returned their completed reading calendars, met their grade level reading goal, and completed & returned at least 8 tent activities & 6 additional activities (reading response and/or book reviews). 2 of the additional activities must be a reading response. Award: Party with ice cream and games, a free book & additional prizes

2. Chocolate – learners who returned their completed reading calendars, met their grade level reading goal, and completed and returned at least 5 tent activities & 4 additional activities (reading response and/or book reviews). 2 of the additional activities must be a reading response. Award: Free book & additional prizes

3. Marshmallow – learners who returned their signed reading calendars and completed and returned at least 3 tent activities & 2 additional activities (reading response and/or book reviews) but did not reach their grade level goal for total minutes read. Learner must meet at least ¾ of the grade level goal to qualify. Award: Free Book

Read S’more S’more S’more

Read a recipe with an adult. Follow the

directions. Make something tasty.

Go for a walk or a ride. Read the

road, street, or store signs.

When you are eating breakfast, read the cereal

box.

Watch a sporting event. Read the

players’ shirts and the scoreboard.

Complete a crossword or word search

puzzle.

Choose a piece of mail to read. It can be a letter, a flyer or even a catalog.

Read the weekly grocery flyer. Help

an adult make a shopping list.

Create a scavenger hunt at

home. Read the clues.

Look up the movie listings. Read the

titles and the times they’re playing.

Read the comic strips in the newspaper.

Read HERE THERE EVERYWHERE

Play a board game that involves

reading.

Read a joke or a riddle book. Tell some of your new jokes.

Keep all the lights off and read by

flashlight.

Build a fort of blankets. Read

inside.

Visit your library. Find a comfortable

spot to read.

Take a break from the sun and read by the pool or at

the beach.

Read in the shade of a tree.

Read a book while you are waiting for someone.
