2020 ANNUAL REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT/CEO

Dear Friends,

While the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly changed our lives forever, it has also highlighted the strength, compassion and courage of our physicians, caregivers and generous supporters. SRMC’s Mission Statement has taken on a new meaning this year and I could not be more proud of the way our entire “SRMC Family” and our community partners have responded in the face of this national health crisis.   As the region’s only independent and not-for-profit hospital, we swiftly rallied together and rose to the challenge through our ability to make decisions locally and responsively, based on what was best for our patients and surrounding communities. Our staff responded quickly – reorganizing and reimagining how we provided care so we could be there for those who needed us most. Many milestones have occurred since our early preparations began in March 2020, and we have worked together “to do whatever it takes” to lead our region in a time of constantly changing circumstances.  I am very proud of how SRMC has navigated through the pandemic, and believe that this has truly been a defining moment in our long legacy of service. Throughout this journey, we have seen that the remarkable accomplishments of the past year were made possible through the unwavering commitment, dedication and flexibility of our physicians and staff. The heroic efforts of our healthcare workers highlight the compassion, excellence and courage they bring to work every day, tirelessly caring for our patients and keeping our communities safe.

Sincerely,

Anita Hackstedde, M.D.SRMC President & CEO

SRMCMISSION:- To Serve.- To Care.- To Heal.

SRMC STRONGSRMC’s response to the challenges of COVID-19 highlighted the strength and commitment of our healthcare heroes as they faced each day with courage, compassion, expertise and caring.

PREPARATIONS BEGIN

As the COVID-19 outbreak escalated across the nation in early March, SRMC quickly mounted an efficient response to this rapidly evolving public health crisis.

Advance preparations were vital for protecting physicians and staff, and ensuring the safe care and treatment of patients.

SRMC activated its Incident Command Center to plan and manage the hospital’s emergency preparedness efforts.

Countless hours of preparedness planning and the ongoing efficient management of personal protective equipment and infection control practices helped the SRMC team maximize and conserve its supplies.

Precautions were put in place to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus, including screening at entrances, physical distancing and enhancing the frequency of cleaning.

“WHY I MASK” CAMPAIGN

As the region’s healthcare leader, SRMC launched a public awareness campaign about the importance of masking as a tool to prevent virus transmission.

Note: Some photos were taken prior to masking mandates.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGEAs the first COVID-19 cases were diagnosed in the region, SRMC’s physicians and staff demonstrated an incredible commitment to tirelessly fight against the virus on behalf of our patients and communities.

Frontline workers faithfully attended to the incoming flood of those seeking care. In order to meet the continued demands, SRMC expanded its patient care and treatment areas to increase surge capacity and provide care for the rapid influx of COVID-19 patients seeking medical assistance.

SRMC utilized technology in new ways to deliver care, including the launch of:

- Telehealth visits enabling SCH Professional Corporation patients to receive care from their providers without leaving home.

- A “Virtual Visitor” service allowing patients to stay in contact with loved ones during their hospital stay.

- Tele-ICU program to enhance care for critically ill patients.

SRMC Opened Clinic ForTesting & Treatment

SRMC’s Respiratory Clinic opened in March to provide testing and treatment to meet the growing need for care and help offset patient flow in the Emergency Department.

Over 700 patients were evaluated and treated at the clinic, which was staffed by SRMC physicians and providers.

Fighting the Good FightAs COVID-19 patients were discharged to return home, SRMC staff celebrated and shared in these victories.

Thank You To Our SRMC Family

OUR COMMUNITYCOMES TOGETHER

SRMC has always valued the support of our local communities, and we were incredibly blessed by all those who helped meet the needs of our frontline caregivers during the pandemic. Numerous businesses, civic groups and individuals made community donations of gowns, gloves, face masks and other PPE to help protect our caregivers.

Donated masks, gowns, surgical caps and messages of encouragement were received almost daily from community supporters.

The Rotary Club of Salem (above) donated $6,150 for material to be sewn by local seamstresses into re-usable patient care gowns that were worn by SRMC staff (r).

Several local businesses showed their support for SRMC staff. Shown below are Mark Siegal and Cami Cope, Giant Eagle-Salem, providing lunches for caregivers.

Jalisco’s Mexican Restaurant in Salem dropped off meals for our staff on all three shifts.

Many community organizations and individuals donated snacks and food to help keep our busy care teams going.

A PATHWAY FOR HOPEOn December 22, 2020, SRMC received its first shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which represented a significant mile-marker toward the pandemic’s end. The very next day, the hospital launched its first official day of providing the vaccines to frontline healthcare workers and physicians through a series of staff vaccination clinics.

We provide locally available healthcare and the security of a 24-hour Emergency Department to our patients regardless of their ability to pay. In addition, we invest in the health and well-being of the communities we serve through community programs and services, community partnerships, health professional education and unreimbursed care. Government programs continue to reimburse hospitals less than the cost of care provided, which means that hospitals must absorb these unreimbursed costs.
