Our Salary Guide and Market Insight report has been compiled using data from several sources, including:• Salary information from vacancies in the accountancy & finance sector on reed.co.uk

• Salary information from a cross section of accountancy & finance professionals registered with Reed Accountancy, Reed Finance and reed.co.uk

• Assignments managed by Reed Accountancy and Reed Finance.

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc, with a total sample size of 1,629 workers, of which 358 work in accountancy & finance roles. Fieldwork was undertaken between 9th - 19th October 2014, with the survey carried out online.

The total sample included workers in the following sectors: property & construction, engineering, financial services, hospitality & leisure, marketing, media & communications, branding, retail, science & research. As well as workers in the following roles: accounting, advertising/direct marketing/PR, business development/sales, HR/recruitment, IT/technology, insurance, procurement/purchasing.

Total market was established then broken down into sectors, this guide covers accountancy and finance.

Accountancy & Finance Market Overview2014 saw a marked change in the number of permanent opportunities, as businesses across all sectors had the confidence to expand their accounting functions in line with improved market conditions. Buoyed by increased consumer spending, economic stability and more positive media headlines, accountancy and finance roles are in more plentiful supply.

In the past 12 months, there has been a noticeable increase in demand for executive-level candidates as companies look to bring relief to overburdened teams who have survived on skeleton structures through the downturn. The continued focus is on internal audit and compliance-led roles within certain industries and this is compounded by a candidate shortage, which will drive salaries upwards.

While the majority of available roles are permanent, there has also been an uplift in lucrative contract opportunities which are highly sought after and as a result, we’re seeing the emergence of the ‘professional interim’.

As more options become available, candidates are more likely to speculate with their career choice and the market is already showing evidence of this with more candidates actively seeking new roles. There are also an increasing number of ‘passive’ candidates who are open to hearing about interesting roles, but require more of a ‘search and selection’ approach to identify.

It is hard to pinpoint where the best opportunities are for candidates because we have seen growth in vacancies across the board. Financial Services and its multiple sub-sectors offers a niche and lucrative career path. Public sector organisations also provide access to a variety of roles in which to build experience. As always, the practice field gives candidates a clearly defined career path.

Accountancy & Finance Market Overview

Candidate AdvantageWith growth ramping up, the number of new vacancies is starting to outstrip the number of ‘active’ candidates and this is creating a talent shortfall in some areas, as well as impacting on salary expectations. We are seeing greater evidence of counter offers to retain good people.

Attracting and retaining talent is going to becoming increasingly challenging in the year ahead and employers must have strategies in place to safeguard their skills base. Offering greater flexibility and enhanced remuneration packages will become increasingly common, but the focus also needs to be on training and development to really have the edge. REED data shows the main reason candidates in the sector move jobs is in search of better prospects or promotion.

To secure talent, employers must be decisive and act quickly. This does not mean cutting corners – it is possible to run a recruitment process that is both efficient and thorough. It is also important to consider candidates who fall outside of the desired skill set as this can often net a candidate who is a great cultural fit with the organisation and can be trained up to the requirements of the role. Investing in people in this way is also more likely to foster loyalty to the employer.

Standing Out There is still intense competition for the best packaged opportunities among candidates. In preparing for each job application, it is important they tailor their skill set to the specific needs of the role. Candidates should focus on the impact they have had in their previous roles and present it in the most relevant way to show the employer how they can add value.

Highly skilled candidates will be particularly valuable commodities, especially as the balance between supply and demand tips further in the candidates favour. Those studying towards full qualification will be particularly attractive to prospective employers.

Businesses want candidates who can analyse and help develop the business strategy to drive growth. The finance function has evolved in recent years and is seen as a driving force within an organisation, with increasing commercial manager and finance business partnering roles available.

Looking AheadREED expects to see continued growth in finance vacancies, with a need for strong candidates who can lead robust departments. As the market for talent becomes increasingly competitive, we will see more employers offering roles with clearly defined career progression to attract candidates.
