Stewardship Committee

Dear Faithful Saint, We are preparing our 2018 budget and we need your help. We are getting an earlier start than usual on our Stewardship program. The integrity of our parish requires that we demonstrate to the diocese our financial commitment to support a full-time rector position. This commit-ment will also make our position more attractive to the right potential rector candidates. The vestry would like to share some other financial information concerning the rector search process. The cost to the parish for an interim rector is comparable to that of a full-time rector. In addition, the rector search team will likely incur travel expenses during the candidate review and interview process. Finally, we will be expected to cover relocation expenses incurred by the successful candidate. Our vestry is moving assertively into the search process in the hopes of minimizing the term of the interim rec-tor, and therefore minimizing the associated expenses. As always, your vestry continues to watch vigilantly for opportunities to save our resources and streamline our operating expenses. The proposed budget for operating All Saints’ Episcopal Church in 2018 totals $298,000. This budget breaks down as follows:

We have succeeded at amazing fundraising in past couple of years. This effort was a positive step toward the goal of financially supporting our operations without relying on the reserve funds. However, the proposed 2018 annual budget currently relies on $35,000 from these reserves. This will leave a meager $10,000 safety cushion in these reserves. This equates to 12 days of operating expenses. The vestry is in agreement that we should be striving to rebuild our reserve funds, not depleting them. Recently, All Saints’ Episcopal Church has been blessed with some im-pactful improvements for our facilities: a new organ and speakers, a new Rose window, a Narthex screen, and improvements to Memorial Hall. These improvements have been funded entirely by specific generous gifts that would not have been given to our operating budget and by sep-arate community-based fundraising.

We believe these recent gifts are examples of Christ simply multiplying loaves and fishes for us. Before we can expect our blessings to multiply, we first need to search our hearts, give to Christ all that we are able to share, and trust that his generosity will address all of our needs. So how can you help? Talk with each other about our financial situation. Count our blessings. Ask a vestry member and get informed about how our annual budget is spent. Share your appreciation with each other for the worship we share and the relationships we enjoy as members of All Saints’. Encourage each other to pledge, and pledge early. And final-ly, take personal ownership of our financial stability now – before it becomes a crisis that risks the validity of our call for a new full-time rector. Be generous- as generous as you are able. Pledge sheets are available in the narthex. We are excited about the future plans God has for us. Thank you for helping us position ourselves to respond to what he has in store for us. Yours faithfully in Christ, Diantha Reynolds and Bob Wilson Finance Commissioners

FIT FOR PURPOSE & MOVING FORWARD “Welcoming all; celebrating God’s grace; equipping the saints; serving the world”

September 6, 2017

I began my term on the vestry the month after Fr. Paul arrived in Redding, so I’ve had a “bird’s eye view” of Fr. Paul’s time with us. From the very beginning, he began the process of making us “fit for purpose”. While he guided our parish, we have renovated, updated, upgraded, and created, not just our building interiors, but our worship services, our place in the community and the very hearts and souls of the parishioners themselves. Fr. Paul guided the transformation of our parish in a sacramental way – “the outward and visible sign of inward and spiritual grace.” In order to stay the course in Christ, we are now called to exercise the skills and grace that we have been taught. We are moving into a period of both reflection and action. The vestry, by commission, will be making contact with all ministry leaders to strengthen and deepen the connections between YOUR vestry and YOU. We are making this a priority so that the core of our parish life remains strong and connected. Feedback from you is how we can make our way down this new road. The Holy Spirit is working in us all, and to recognize and develop our mission we need to have all the lines of communication open and receptive to the flow of ide-as. We will require many ways to stay in touch and we are reaching out in love and faith to ask, debate and in-form. We will begin a new set of forums so that you will have many opportunities to have your questions answered, your concerns heard, and your needs and desires known. While our memories of Fr. Paul’s gifts and programs are still fresh in our minds and hearts, begin keeping notes on what is important to you, what you were most enthusiastic about, what touched your heart, and what brought you closer to Christ. I encourage keeping a sa-cred or prayer journal to keep track of your feelings and sort out what is of importance to you. Share your ex-perience and ideas with me or with other members of the vestry. Vestry members all have the red star on our name tags to make it easier to find us before, or after services and during coffee hour or the forums. Action is often the best way to relieve anxiety, stay connected and feel included. We are in need of two vestry members, one to lead “Properties – Building and Grounds” the other to lead “Communications.” I ask that if you feel called to “Do Something,” consider making this commitment. Both of these are only one or two year commitments to fill positions of vestry members that were recently vacated. There is plenty of support both through the vestry itself and from the parish. If you feel called to action, here is a well-defined place to start. Communication is one of my highest priorities, and I want you to all feel welcome to contact me if you feel the need. I have a mailbox in the hallway by the office which I check several times a week; feel free to leave me a message there. I am also available through email at [email protected] and I welcome you to con-tact me through this medium anytime. I will try to respond within 24 hours. I am in the parish directory and have been for several years, in case you have an old one and want to connect the old-fashioned way. Communication is by definition a two way street. Please READ the newsletter, the bulletin, the weekly E-news, and our website. All of our important information is delivered through these venues. If you have new personal information or need to connect, let me, Margie Harrison-Smith, or Nathalie Hatch know so we can keep you up to date. We, together and with Christ, are on the journey we have been given to strengthen, deepen and expand our love and faith in HIS purpose for us. We have been made “Fit for Purpose” and we are God’s people. With prayer, faith, hope, and love we will step out into the darkness knowing that Christ loves us, died for us and will never abandon us. Blessings in Abundance, Janet Gallino, Rector’s Warden

The first step that the Bishop outlined for the vestry in the transition was to schedule 6 weekends of supply

clergy to serve All Saints’. As of this of Saints’ Alive publication (Sept.-Nov. 2017), we do not know when

we will have an Interim priest, so this schedule is the start of our new chapter at All Saints’.

My criteria for booking supply clergy was to schedule clergy from our Deanery who were familiar with All

Saints’, but whose voices we had not heard in a while. We were lucky that every priest we approached was

willing and excited to spend time with us at All Saints’.

Our list of Supply Clergy for September and early October include:

Fr. David Englund, who retired from St. Paul’s in Oroville in 2016. Since his retirement, he has visited All

Saints’ a few times and knows many members of the congregation from Cursillo. Fr. David served for over 30

years as a pastor in the Churches of God. Later, he was ordained as an Episcopal priest and served as the

Priest-in-Charge at St. Paul’s Oroville from 2007 until his retirement in 2016.

Fr. Aiden Rontoni, is a new priest to the Diocese of Northern California. He lives in Vina, but regularly serves

with many of the small churches in the Alta California Deanery. Fr. Aiden worked with Fr. Paul to prepare

some couples for marriage at All Saints’ and will perform the weddings this fall. In addition, Fr. Aiden took a

spiritual pilgrimage to Great Britain this year.

Fr. Larry Holben is the priest in charge at St. Barnabas in Mount Shasta where he has served since his ordina-

tion in 2010. Earlier in his life he was a film and television writer in Los Angeles. For eight years he served

as a member of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker Community, serving in the community’s free kitchen and

clinic on Skid Row as well as and operating “Nuestra Tienda,” an at-cost food store for Skid Row families. He

subsequently moved to San Francisco and is the author of several published books, including All the Way to

Heaven: A Theological Reflection on Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement and For All the Saints:

the First 100 Years of All Saints’ Church, San Francisco. Fr. Larry served as the Dean for our Alta California

Deanery for years.

The Very Rev. Richard Yale is the Rector of St. John the Evangelist in Chico and is the new Dean for the Alta

California Deanery. Fr. Richard has been a clergy member in our Diocese for many years and is familiar with

the issues and programs we face in the North State. Fr. Richard is a postulant to be an oblate of New Camal-

doli, a house of the Congregation of the Camaldolese Benedictines in Big Sur. Wikipedia defines oblates as

“individuals, either laypersons or clergy, normally living in general society, who, while not professed monks

or nuns, have individually affiliated themselves with a monastic community of their choice.” The Benedic-

tines follow St. Benedict of Nurcia, who was born in 480 to a Roman noble family. In the mid sixth century

he drafted his famous Rule of St. Benedict (RSB) for the ongoing health of monastic communities. The RSB

has become has become a classic of Christian spiritual literature, and is renowned for its approach to Christian

spirituality as grounded in a community seeking Christ through the patterns of common life and the pursuit of

humility and obedience to God.

I hope you join us in September and early October to worship with these varied and energetic clergy as they

share their time and talents with us at All Saints’!

Please see the list of dates for visiting supply clergy on page 7 of this newsletter.

EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN (ECW) submitted by Liz Benage

ECW (Episcopal Church Women) will meet on Monday, September 11, 2017, and Monday,

October 9, 2017, at 11:00 AM in Memorial Hall. This year’s Harvest Bazaar is on Saturday,

October 28 this year, and the agenda for these two meetings is to work on the Bazaar. All

women at All Saints’ are very welcome to join in the fun.

There are many opportunities for everyone to help, primarily by donating items to sell and baking cookies,

pies, and cakes. If you (or your friends and neighbors!) have vintage and contemporary jewelry, linens, col-

lectibles, and household items, these are big sellers. Donations of wine, chocolate, and other nice things to put

in the beautiful baskets we sell are also needed. Donations can be left at the church office during office hours,

or you can phone Diantha Reynolds, Jan Logue, or Liz Benage for other arrangements.

Look for sign-up sheets in mid-October to bring baked goods to sell and also to help with the Bazaar. Here is

the schedule for the week of the Bazaar. There are many things to do, but we are a well-organized bunch and

enjoy putting everything together! If you are able to come at any of these times, all help is appreciated:

Thursday, Oct. 26 (from 8:00 AM) – Bring boxes into Eaton Hall, unpack sale items, and begin pricing. Friday, Oct. 27 (from 8:30 AM) – Finish pricing and take everything into Memorial Hall. Saturday, Oct. 28 (arrive at about 8:00 AM) – Bazaar, Bake Shop, and Pie & Coffee Cafe open at 9:00 am! Sunday, Oct. 29 (the Last Hurrah, open between the two services) – Sale continues for the convenience of parishioners. Following the 10:30 AM service, we work to return Memorial Hall to normal.

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING Submitted by Debbie Spiess

Daughters of the King's study focus during the summer was the study of the scriptures for upcoming Sunday services. Summer is a busy time for everyone, but we met each week for lively discussion, updating our pray-er list, and Noonday Prayer. In June we provided backpacks to the children attending One Safe Place's day-camp. Other service work this summer included facilitating receptions following memorial services of family members of our Daughters. Our own Daughters of the King President, Terri Bundy, has been appointed by the National Board of the Daughters of the King to the position of Communications Director of the Province VIII Board of Directors. Province VIII covers the states of California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Alaska and Hawaii. On September 11 we will begin a study of the book Traveling Light by Max Lucado. In addition to that, we will have our annual Quiet Day on a date to be determined in October. Anyone who would like to join us for a day of prayer and meditation is welcome. Please contact any member of Daughters if you are interested. In November we are planning a "Cookie Day" and will be delivering homemade cookies to Veterans.

Daughters meet weekly on Tuesday at 9:30 AM. We welcome anyone who is interested to join us.

THRIFT SHOP NEWS Submitted by Gerry Statton

Wishing you a happy fall. We are hopeful that by the middle of September it will be cooler and we can begin putting out fall/winter clothing. Halloween will arrive in the shop on Wednesday, September 20th. Come early and find a great costume. Since May, we have donated $6000 to the Good News Rescue Mission. This amount of mon-ey was matched by their "matching funds program" making it $12,000. We received a letter of appreciation from the director, Jonathan Anderson. One thousand dollars was sent to North Valley Catholic Social Services to help children with back to school clothing. Month-ly, we support Lifeline ($350) and the Rector's Discretionary Fund ($100). We are supporting Hills Country Clinic on Gold Street with appropriate books. Please come by and visit us. We are open Monday-Thursday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Friday till 1:00 PM.

go from vehicle to vehicle collecting the offerings of Halloween treats in a safe but festive environ-

ment. Both Trunkers and Treaters are encouraged to dress up in appropriate Halloween costumes.

Come join us for this fun and safe family Halloween celebration. At least twelve volunteer Trunk vehicles

are needed, but more is better! For more information, please contact Rachel Clements.

125th Anniversary

Recently we celebrated the 125th Anniversary of All Saints'. Bishop Barry blessed the Narthex screen, the organ,

the Rose window, and the Annunciation windows. In addition, we hosted a dinner where we celebrated our volun-

teers (past and present), enjoyed a time of fellowship, were entertained by the

Harmonia Singers, and said goodbye to Fr. Paul and Maggie.

Our thanks go to the following people whose hard work made the event hap-

pen:

Fr. Paul for working with the Bishop to design the service;

The choir for starting their season early so they could participate in this

event;

The Eucharistic ministers, acolytes and ushers

Harmonia Singers for adding to the merriment during the party
