11 Cents: Parish Life
Growing up, I visited multiple parishes, and I have worked in four parishes. I have seen two trends that are widespread and ultimately dysfunctional.
The first, is that parishes do a little bit of everything, but consequently they do nothing especially well. The intentions are good — people come to a pastor with a program they want to run, and he either ap-proves it, or not. The problems are, that the offer-ings of a parish are not a part of a cohesive inspired vision, and they end up taking on the personality of the pastor. That, becomes the second dysfunctional trend: parishes that are overly dependent on the personality of the pastor.
Fr. Jim is aware of this second trend, so, as a pas-tor and boss, I believe, he is a phenomenal listener. He is, on the other hand, aware of the parishes do-ing a-little-bit-of-everything trend too, and so he in-sists on the importance of casting a vision.
Within my department, I am trying to avoid both un-helpful trends. Through the ministry fair, I tried to “listen” to the responses, and focus on specific key ministries. I found that many people signed up for service and outreach. So those people have spent the past six months meeting and researching local, national, and international outreach opportunities. I would love if service and outreach become a key part of who we are, as aSaints Peter and Paul Par-ish, but I also want to keep listening. So, please go to WWW.TINYURL.COM/ZE2S447 if you haven’t already, and tell us what kind of service opportuni-ties you would like to be a part of.
Ideally, this survey will help create a sustainable community of people from Saints Peter and Paul, who are committed to serving others. This is how we slowly transform ourselves and the world around us.
