Halloween and Chris anity Halloween, as you know, is observed the night of October 31. It takes it name (All Hallow e’en) from being the eve of the holy day of All Saints on November 1 (All Hallows Eve).
Halloween has its origin in pre-Chris an mes and there is no direct connec on between this day and any Chris-an tradi on. The Celts in Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and Bri any in northwestern France celebrated New Year’s
Day on November 1. Among the Celts, under the influence of the religious leadership of the Druids, a fes val was held the evening before to honor Samhain, their lord of death.
This celebra on ended harvest me and ushered in the winter season, the season of cold, darkness, death, and decay in nature. This me of the year was also symbolic of the mystery of human death.
There are several possibili es for the origin of the tradi on of giving treats as part of trick or trea ng. It was be-lieved among the Celts that on this night evil spirits, demons, ghosts and witches roamed freely to great their season of winter darkness. These would threaten, scare and play tricks on people. The only way to be safe was to bribe them with treats or to pass as one of them by dressing and ac ng like them.
Halloween customs survived into contemporary mes with hardly any change. They were not widlely observed in the United States un l a er the potato famine in Ireland in the 1840’s caused a massive migra on of the Irish, a Cel c people.
While Halloween does not have any direct connec on to Chris anity, it is always good to remember that it is the night of the Holy Day, All Saints Day. Dressing up as a saints has been a long me tradi on and a pleasant alter-na ve to some of the costumes offered in the stores. Descrip on of Halloween taken from Catholic Customs and Tradi ons by Greg Dues, Twenty Third Publica ons, 2004.
November as a Special Month of Prayer The month of November is an important me for prayer. We end the month of October with the secular prac-
ce of trick or trea ng with the understanding that the night of Halloween was the evening before All Hallows Day (All Saints Day). All Hallows E’en or holy evening ushered in the Holy Day of All Saints when the Church gathered and prayed for those who are now with God in Heaven…the saints.
The souls striving for heaven, those in purgatory, are prayed for in the Church in a special way on All Souls Day, November 2nd and throughout the en re month. Purgatory, you may remember is the state of final purifica-
on a er death and before the entrance into heaven for those who died in God’s friendship, but were only im-perfectly purified. In other words, it is a final cleansing of human imperfec on before one is able to enter the joy of heaven.
The theme of death that is honored during the en re month of November, beginning with All Saints Day (Wednesday with Mass celebrated at 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m.) and All Souls Day (this Thursday with Mass celebrated at 7:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.) fits the natural atmosphere of the month in nature. The har-vest is completed, a dying becomes evident throughout nature, cold weather and a hint of winter becomes more prevalent, and the dark of night becomes more pervasive.
One of the most ancient customs related to the respect for the dead is to visit and care for their graves, place flowers on them, and to offer a prayer. This custom is stronger in some parts of the world than others, but it is a work of mercy to pray for the dead. “May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.”
Prayer of the Faithful Departed O gentlest heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor cap ve souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the soul(s) of thy servant(s) _____. Be not severe in thy judgment but let some drops of thy Precious Blood fall upon our beloved departed, and do thou, O merciful Savior, send thy angels to conduct the soul of thy servant(s) to a place of refreshment and peace. Amen.
