Deacon in Training at St. Thomas Saint Thomas is honored to have been chosen by the Arizona
Diocese as a church for the Deacon in Training program. Keehna
Sture, Deacon in Training, will be at St. Thomas to begin her training
here with us. She will work closely with our own Deacon, Deirdre
Moulinier.
As a church participating in this program, our responsibilities
are mainly to create opportunities for Keehna to be active and visible
within the congregation and allow her to share in our ministries.
Keehna Sture, who will be starting her Deacon internship at
Saint Thomas on September 1, is a retired RN and grief counselor. She
has worked in various settings and in various places over the years,
deciding about four years ago that Arizona would be a great place to
retire. As it turned out, it wasn’t time to be retired, but to be rewired!
During long, quiet walks in the beauty of the mountains in which
Prescott is situated, and within the faith community of St. Luke’s, she
discerned a call to the diaconate, and has been up to her ears in
4
deacon formation for the past year. It’s now time for her internship,
and she is absolutely thrilled to be assigned to Saint Thomas! Having
been born into an Air Force family, and being one of 10 children,
Keehna is a people person who learned early on to go with the flow
and embrace life, wherever and however it comes to her! She is
looking forward to being at St. Thomas and learning what servanthood
looks like in the community of Clarkdale!
Let’s all welcome Keehna with open arms and open hearts!
A word from our Vicar, The Rev. Susan C. Armer The Rev. Susan C. Armer, is taking a summer break from writing a
Newsletter article but, lucky for us, she’s not taking a break from being
our wonderful Vicar!
A word from our Deacon, The Rev. Deirdre Moulinier Our wonderful and hardworking Deacon, Deirdre Mouliner, is also
taking a well-deserved break from writing this summer.
Senior Warden’s Corner with Barbara Evans It is summertime and the flowers are blooming, the sky is cloudy
and hopefully the rain is coming. What more can you say? It is
Clarkdale and I’d rather live here than anywhere else.
One thing we at St. Thomas can say during summertime in Clarkdale
is…. “We hope the new air conditioner comes soon for the Parish Hall.”
By the time this Newsletter goes to press, it will probably be installed
and working.
Another thing we at St. Thomas can say during summertime in
Clarkdale is….. “Oh my, oh my, the Food Pantry is bursting at the
seams!” That’s true and St. Thomas has been blessed which is why we
are to be able to share this very necessary offering of food to anyone
who needs it. We are blessed to have so much food given to us by
Manzanita Outreach, the Clarkdale Post Office (yes, we still have a lot
of that food left), The Spirit of Joy Church, our congregation and the
5
people who drop food off in the black trash cans outside our buildings.
On top of all that, we are extremely blessed to have the wonderful
volunteer workers who organize and arrange all the food and help give
it out. Come and see the Food Pantry in action on the 2nd or 4th
Tuesday of any month. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
On another note, how great it is that the Bishop feels that we, St.
Thomas Church in Clarkdale, are worthy to be used as a Deacon in
Training Program cite?! Please join me in welcoming Keehna Sture,
Deacon in Training, to our church. Let’s show the Arizona Diocese that
we can give a new Deacon the help, support, encouragement and love
she needs during her time with us at St. Thomas.
Stay plugged in on all the upcoming events at St. Thomas such as,
a fire drill, the Spaghetti Dinner, our Angel Tree Christmas, and other
events. It’s easy to keep informed by checking our webpage at
www.stthomas.azdiocese.org or reading the announcements in our
Sunday bulletins.
A note from the Parish Administrator, Shirley R. Pogany Summer is nearly over and I’m sad to see it go. Autumn is
almost here and it is a strange time of year for me. I have conflicting
emotions about autumn and on most days, I don’t like it very much.
However, in an effort to maintain a positive attitude this year during
autumn and the winter months that follow, I have attempted to find
something positive (seen in italics) to counter some of my negative
feelings about this seasonal change.
My allergies are always worse in the fall. But, autumn also
brings that crisp and clean air that makes everything smell good. It
feels good to be outside and to take a deep and cleansing breath of
the cool fall air.
Fall gives me a horrible sense of dread with the realization that
winter is just around the corner. However, I am grateful that I am smart
enough to be keenly aware of what the seasonal changes during
autumn really mean. Because of this awareness, I am able to prepare
for the coming winter.
6
Autumn is a time of hard work for me. In preparation for the
coming winter I find myself spending a lot of time gathering wood to
use in my fireplace. Although, it is nice to be outside before it gets too
cold to be miserable, I often wonder why are there always spiders on
firewood? I mean really, isn’t there somewhere else they could live?
Haven’t they learned that they will inevitably die in a fireplace? Well,
since I am not a spider, I may never know the answer but I can say with
certainty, I really do enjoy having a fire in my fireplace on cold winter
days. I don’t even mind cleaning the fireplace when the ash gets to be
too much. And as a side note, when I empty the shredding machine in
the church office, I take the bag of little bits of shredded paper home
with me and use it as fire starter in my fireplace at home. It works
great!
Arizona is notoriously windy and the autumn months are no
exception. Windy conditions during fall and winter can make a nice day
feel like the temperature is below zero outside. But, I very much enjoy
a warm wind and of course, most days of autumn are relatively warm
in comparison to winter. Besides, the autumn wind is more like a
gentle breeze that always smells good.
During autumn the sunset gets earlier and sunrise gets later.
My days get so short during the fall that I always feel rushed to get
things done before dark. I have to wait later in the morning to walk my
dog and we all know dogs lack patience. On the other hand, as the
sunrise gets later and later with each passing day, I am able to sleep a
little later and that is always a bonus.
Autumn is that time of year when you start to pack away
summer clothes and unpack your cold weather clothes. At first, it is fun
to see all the clothes and shoes that I forgot I had and I look forward to
wearing them. However, I must admit, I usually feel a bit concerned
about whether or not some of my winter clothes still fit. On the bright
side, this might provide another excuse to go shopping for new
clothes. (As if I really need an excuse).
During autumn the tree in my backyard starts dropping its
leaves of many colors at a very rapid rate. I am typically ankle deep in
7
leaves which, as you might imagine, makes it very difficult to see where
my dog…….and then I usually step in it. To avoid this emotional trauma
and somewhat tragic injury to my shoes, I must rake every day.
Realistically though, who doesn’t love the colors of fall leaves?! My
yard looks like a psychedelic wonderland. Absolutely beautiful!
Yes, once autumn begins there is no turning back. To get back
to the hot and wonderful days of summer, you must first survive the
winter. I seriously dislike winter with every fiber of my being. Being cold
is a horrible feeling for me and if the cold is accompanied by the
dreaded snow, then my life becomes a nightmare. I don’t like driving in
snow, shoveling snow, walking in snow or anything having to do with
snow. I have an ice scraper in my car, just in case, but dread the
thought of ever having to use it. Ah winter! How I detest you! But I must
confess, there is something incredibly beautiful about seeing fresh
fallen snow on a mountain top. It is so white, so pure, it even sparkles
like millions of crystals when the sun shines on it. Even snow in my
drive-way can be beautiful. That moment when it stops snowing, the
sun comes out and there are no footprints on the fresh fallen snow.
Yes, that is a beautiful site.
Rarely does it snow in Clarkdale but this season, if we are so
unlucky to have snow in town, I am determined to make the most of it.
After all, I haven’t built a snowman or had a good snowball fight in
many years. I always enjoyed these things when I was young and there
is no reason why I can’t enjoy them now. I always loved sledding when
I was a kid. That feeling of exhilaration as you race down a hill at high
speed, totally at the mercy of the ice and snow. Ah yes, that was so
much fun! So, while I have kayaking in the summer to feed my need for
excitement, why not have sledding in the winter to serve the same
purpose?
I do believe that writing this article has proven successful. I
think I’ve just convinced myself that I can deal with winter this year
and quite surprisingly, I am almost looking forward to it.
