During a nationally televised football game, one of
the roving reporters interviewed some rather unusu-
al fans. Dressed in outrageous costumes and painted
from head to toe in team colors, they were asked
why they went to such extremes for a football game.
They answered that they would do anything to sup-
port their team and help them win. The team might
not have won, but those fans got their 15 minutes of
fame!
As Jesus is making His way through the city of Jeri-
cho, He spotted Zacchaeus who had climbed a tree
to see Jesus because it was the only way he could
see over the crowd. When others criticized Jesus for
dining at the house of a ‘sinner’ (he was the chief
tax collector), Zacchaeus defended himself, showing
his generosity and his devotion. He went above and
beyond what the law required.
If our faith and our religion are important to us, we
have to ask ourselves what we are willing to do for
it. It’s one thing to say we believe or that we love
God; it’s another to put it into action. Would you
explain faith to someone who needed to hear it? Or
is that the job of the priest? Would you pray in a
public place? Would you work for justice? Would
you feed the hungry? Would you volunteer for ser-
vice at your parish? What would you do for the sake
of faith?

November 3 ~ Thirty-first Sunday of Ordinary Time
There is a simple lesson not to be missed in today’s gospel.
You don’t have to be rich or poor, have a high-powered job or
are looking for a job for Jesus to come to your house. All that
is required is that you open your heart to Him. Zacchaeus was
“seeking to see who Jesus was”. The reward for this seeker
was an encounter – one that got people talking! Today, people
are still seeking to see who Jesus is. Some may be unaware
that He is what is missing in their lives. Knowing the im-
portance of Jesus in your own life, is there someone you know
who is a seeker, like Zacchaeus, that you can introduce to
Jesus?
