Jubilee Year of Mercy November 6, 2016 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Jubilee for Prisoners

One of the most moving images of Pope Francis’ ministry comes from Holy Thursday. Slowly, deliberately, Francis kneels down before prisoners—men, women, young, old, Christian, Muslim—and washes their feet, recalling Jesus admonition to Peter: “If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14). On today’s Jubilee for Prisoners, whose rights the Church bids us advocate, Jesus declares in the Gospel, “to [God] all are alive” (Luke 20:38). Have we “imprisoned” anyone figuratively, but no less painfully, passing harsh judgment, then refusing our respect, acceptance, even affection? This month of All Saints and All Souls bids us reflect on our eternal destiny and prepare for it. Respect for ourselves and others, souls and bodies, practical care for neighbors and strangers: such witness affirms that we view our present in light of our future, and believe that, even now, in our midst, stands the Lord of life, the living Jesus. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.” 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

There are two important lessons here. First, we are called to be generous with our encouragement and hope. As God shows us mercy, we must be merciful to others. Second, joy is contagious! The joy we receive from doing good works not only strengthens us, it encourages others as well.

NOT ENOUGH

It is not enough for me to love God if my neighbor does not love God. —St. Vincent de Paul

Spread the Word

Confidence

Page 8 November 6, 2016

I used to take Jesus’ saying at the end of today’s Gospel (Luke 20:38) as a proof that God was outside of time, not limited or fixed in time as we are. When he says that all are alive to God, I took it to mean that God is just as present to me in the twenty-first century as the L was to Abraham thousands of years before the time of Christ. But people in Jesus’ era had no conception of time as a dimension. The phrase “God of the living” means that the dead are alive again in the Resurrection. Why was it easier for the Sadducees to imagine the impossible—a woman wondering who her spouse is in heaven—than to imagine the Resurrection?

Even today, some people find it easier to imagine a romantic vampire than to believe in someone rising from the dead. Think about how much money and effort go into advertising one of those vampire movies. Do we see many people put that kind of enthusiasm into their faith? Maybe that’s why St. Paul prays for the word of God to “speed forward and be glorified.” So how do we help the word to speed forward?

Let’s take a hint from advertising. I get very annoyed with ads that go on and on about how good their product is and how you can get two for $10 (plus $15 postage and handling). I’m more likely to buy a product a friend shows me that will do something useful. Why not spread the word like that? Be “useful” for God. Offer to help someone carry in their groceries or fill out their income tax forms. Be generous with your time. Listen to someone’s troubles, not with a bored look, but with concern and support. (Don’t limit your generosity to friends only.) And if anyone asks why, you can tell them you are just grateful for what God has done for you. Many people out there are looking for a reason to believe in God. You could be that reason, but it won’t be because you can debate the nature of time. People aren’t looking to be bored by another commercial. They are looking for signs of God’s love that will lead them to faith. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

God is real. With complete faith in God’s intimate love and mercy, believers face both joyful and tragic circumstances with confidence. Saint Paul prays for us to know this confidence: “May our Lord . . . encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.” We join Saint Paul in this prayer, asking the Lord to give us the strength to speak and act rightly. Jesus encourages us at all times. He gives us hope that God’s strength in us will grow, making us worthy to live forever in heaven. There, in paradise, we will no longer know death. As Jesus says in our Gospel today, we will be “like angels.” Even though our lives on this earth must end, we live in hope. We may not be asked to die as martyrs, like the Maccabees, but every moment of every day, God offers us the very same hope and strength that helped the martyrs remain faithful to the end.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well educated, looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding “mixed marriage” or sending children “beyond the seas” for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse. In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and until the 1920s and the Republic, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LIFE EVERLASTING

The second book of Maccabees tells a powerful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inflicted upon the brothers and their mother, is their belief in the promise of resurrection and life everlasting in God. Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ’s message of love, so that he might be delivered from other nonbelievers anxious to do him harm. The apostle is confident in such prayer, just as he is con-fident in the everlasting support of Jesus and God the Father. And there’s that “everlasting” word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting—albeit meaningless—question about the status of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that marriage isn’t an issue for the risen children of God. More importantly, he assures them that their ancestors do live on in God, even as evidenced by the Father’s words to Moses. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
