Independence Day

This week our nation celebrates Independence Day. We remember the many blessings God has be-stowed upon our nation and reflect with gratitude on the sacrifices that others have made over the past two hundred and forty years to protect those freedoms and blessings. I hope this holiday will be a time for family and friends to spend together, enjoying the blessings we have received and the people God has placed in our lives. It should also be a time to remember that we cannot take these blessings for granted. Freedom is not free. Our current military personnel and veterans have made great sacrifices. I am grateful to all our service men and women. They are in our prayers. But our gratitude must also be expressed in other tangible ways. We have an obligation to take care of them, to ensure they receive needed medical care, that their families are nurtured while they are overseas, to help integrate them back into civilian life, and to work for peace and justice so that their sacrifices will not be in vain.

Isaiah prophesies the coming of the Messiah, the Anointed One, who has received the Spirit of the Lord to proclaim glad tidings to the poor, liberty to the captives, the release of prisoners, and vindication by our God. In Luke’s gospel, Jesus reads this passage in the synagogue and declares that today this Scripture has been fulfilled in their hearing.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the first reading, the prophet Elisha visits a childless woman and her elderly husband. She offers him hospitality and sets up a room where he can stay whenever he passes through her town. In response, Elisha promises that within a year she will give birth to a baby son. In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul reminds them that they have been baptized into Christ’s death so that they may rise with him to new life. Consequently, they are to consider themselves dead to sin and living for God. In the gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that they must take up their cross and follow him. He adds that anyone who helps the “little ones” is his disciple and will not lose his eternal reward.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our readings tell us the costs and rewards of following Christ. Theses go hand in hand. The cost of discipleship can be heavy, but the rewards are the goal of our Christian life and the core of our faith.

St. Paul tells the Romans that we are baptized into Christ’s death. We must share in the crucifixion, whatever form that takes in our lives. We must consider ourselves dead to sin. Jesus goes further, tell-ing the apostles that if they love father or mother more than him, they are not worthy to be his disci-ples. He tells them they must take up their cross and follow him if they are to be worthy of him.

This is difficult for all of us. Jesus doesn’t tell us we are not to love our parents or our children, but that we cannot put them before our love of God. Usually the two are not in conflict, but our spiritual orientation should be to always follow the will of God, even when it costs us the affection or support of our family. To take up our cross is to look for the will of God in the midst of our difficulties and imi-tate Christ in his sufferings. In doing so, we draw closer to God in this life and we are promised eternal salvation in the next.

The rewards are mentioned in all three of our readings as well. From the Second Book of Kings, we hear the story of a woman from Shunem (a town in Galilee) who recognizes Elisha as a prophet and of-fers him hospitality and a room to stay in whenever he visits. The woman has no children and her hus-band is elderly. In her culture to be barren was a sign of God’s disfavor. Her hospitality is rewarded and she is promised a son.

This story reinforces God’s blessings for those who cooperate with his plan for salvation. It reminds us of the blessing that the widow of Zarapeth received when she gave hospitality to Elijah. She was able to eat for three years, in spite of the drought when nothing grew. Her story also reminds us of the childless women who become mothers to great figures in Israel’s history; most notably Samson, Samuel and John the Baptist. And of course Jesus himself was conceived by a virgin mother because she was full of grace. All these people responded by cooperating with God and putting their entire lives at his disposal. These are all stories of God’s providence (blessings) to those who welcome others. This is what Jesus tells his disciples in the latter part of today’s gospel. Those who receive a prophet receive a prophet’s reward. Those who receive a righteous man receive a righteous man’s reward. Those who give a cup of cold water to a thirsty child are called his disciples and will not lose their reward. These promises are all available to us if we have but the grace to believe and follow in Christ’s footsteps.

Just as we reflect on the costs and rewards of discipleship, this week is a good time to reflect on the costs and rewards of our freedoms. As a nation, we celebrate Independence Day. Although there is a lot of division and turmoil in our country, we enjoy many freedoms and blessings that most people around the world do not have. Gratitude is the most appropriate response to receiving these blessings , and, of course, it should show forth in action. Freedom is not free. We honor and remember those who sacrificed themselves for the life we enjoy today. As we reflect on our freedoms and the costs that oth-ers have made, we are called to sacrifice ourselves to help those who have served in our military and to help share our blessings with all members of our society. Amid the parades and the picnics, please stop and take time to reconnect to remember the real reason for our celebration. Have a great week and a Happy Fourth of July. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Stories from “The 5 O’Clockers” (Part III) By Nora Kerr photo by Ashley Jablonski (8th grade) Memories of SRB Past, Thoughts of the Present, and Looking Toward the Future

This is the third and final installment of our SRB Spotlight on “The 5 O’Clockers,” highlighting several of our long time parishioners (and 5 o’clock mass regulars), Enzo Mion, John and Margaret Callaghan, and Phil-lip and Dolly Lukose. This is how they found St. Robert Bellarmine and what has kept them coming back year after year. Enzo Mion has become an institution at St. Roberts over the years. “In my years at SRB, people will often use Enzo as a reference point, such as someone has been a parishioner longer than Enzo,” joked Joy Stauber, who interviewed Enzo and other long-time SRB members earlier this year. Not surprisingly, Enzo did not disappoint and told many stories of his earlier

days with the parish. He and his family came into the neighborhood in 1971, finding an idyllic property right near Dunham Park. The day he moved in, he bumped into an old grade school classmate and felt right at home. Enzo had 3 daughters of his own and enrolled them at St. Roberts right away. “All my children AND grandchildren graduated from here,” said Enzo. His wife Pat played the accordion and had a beautiful singing voice. Her musical skills were immediately put to use for the parish talent show. Enzo was quick to join in and help—not one to miss a good party. “A lot of the Holy Name guys got in-volved. Picture 12 guys with wigs and makeup, with balloons stuffed in our shirts.” These were the days of the St. Roberts Follies – an annual variety show and fundraiser for the parish that ran from 1972–1975. The shows involved intensive deco-rations and mandatory rehearsals to memorize skits, songs and dances much in the spirit of the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, or Abbott and Costello. “They put a big stage together and we had 12-15 acts. There were 6 other shows running throughout the building. We made good money and ran 2 weekends.” The show was a hit. People from other parishes would come to see the performance. Each room of the school was decked out in a different theme and took a village to put on. “There was the Egyptian room, the 20s room… we had 100 people volunteering to write scripts.” Enzo also reflected on less than happy moments in our church history, such as the fire of 1988. “We borrowed vestments from St. Constance and a chal-ice from OLV for 7am mass that morning.” The damage to the new church was extensive, but it didn’t stop parishioners from gathering in the school gym to pray. The people of St. Roberts came together and fundraised enough money to rebuild the current church that stands today, dedicated in 1990. This spirit of coming together has been seen time and time again when reflecting on parish history. St. Roberts brought people together. Parish events such as golf outings, spaghetti dinners, Holy Name dances, and spaghetti dinners all serve as special memories to these long-standing parishioners. Enzo was always happy to volunteer. “All of us guys were working 50 hours a week, but still found time during the month to get together and work an event.” Enzo joined the school board shortly after retiring, where he still holds a seat today. “They keep me busy and keep my nose in what’s going on around here,” said Enzo. Phillip and Dolly Lukose are other longtime parishioners of St. Roberts, coming to the parish in 1983. All four of their children went to SRB. “We are from South India,” said Phillip. “We came to Chicago in 1983 as migrants. I married this young lady [pointing to Dolly] had 4 kids, and found out St. Roberts was a good place for young families.” The Lukose fam-ily has remained here ever since and live a half block from the church. “We had many bad times and many good times here,” said Phillip. Dolly spoke of the parish’s warm reception. “We’re one of the few Indians here, and everyone has made us feel so welcome. Everyone is so supportive.” John and Margaret Callaghan are also long-time members of St. Robert Bellarmine. “I’ve been with the parish 73 years,” said John, “I did all my schooling here and my sons went to school here.” He still gets together with many of his old SRB classmates, graduates of the class of 1953. He points to one of his peers across the room, Julie Gaskin. “We started first grade here over 70 years ago. We still laugh about the same things. St. Roberts was the glue that held us together. Like a bunch of old men, we get together and talk about the past—all the great times and good memories.” John recalls classrooms of 60 students with one nun to manage them all. “There were 8 nuns—one for each classroom, plus a cook,” said John. Fr. Gillespie, the founding pastor, was larger than life back then. John remembers Father roaming the halls and times young John was lucky enough to shake hands with him. After 70 years, even John is surprised he is still here. “If it were up to my sons, we would’ve moved away many years ago. We go to Florida and come back and say we’re only going to stay one more year. You young people come in but us old people don’t feel pushed out.” John’s wife Margaret married into the parish and was happy to send her two sons here. She recalls hearing the horrible news of the parish fire. “I remember hearing the alarms, I drove here and it was so horrifying.” The church was engulfed in flames. Reporters and gawkers were everywhere. “I don’t know who I was talking to, but I turned to this woman next to me and said, ‘We’re going to build this church again.’” That woman was a reporter and the statement became a rally cry. “That sound clip was all over the media.” Margaret mirrors John’s sentiment about leaving the area. “It’s been a great 50 years. We’ve thought about moving, but it’s too late now,” she said with a laugh. John seems happy enough to call SRB his forever home. “I ain’t going nowhere.”
