FROM FATHER STAN 3

And suddenly it is summer. The weather has warmed up, the trees are almost fully in leaf, I even see corn several inches about the ground in some fields. I’ve heard my first complaints about it being too warm. Graduation parties have started, wedding dates are approaching, and school children are becoming distracted. Some things will slow down in the parishes, but we do want to start some of the GROW recommendations in the coming weeks. Some of these will be very simple – families bringing up gifts rather than ushers, planning community education events, being more engaged in some community events, having books in each church where birthdays, wedding and death anniversaries can be remembered for our intercessions, that sort of thing. Sometime during the summer I hope to teach a class on the book of Revelation, probably on consecutive nights some week. Enjoy these days and this season, but don’t check out. We need God every season, every week, every minute.

Today is the Feast of the Ascension. We all know that this refers to when Jesus returned to the Father, when he left the earth in bodily form and is now “seated at the right hand of the Father.” It is reported that he was among his disciples for 40 days after the resurrection. Forty days is one of those terms used often in the Bible, and it doesn’t have to be exactly 40 days – it means a fairly substantial time, but weeks rather than years. Ascension means not only rising up physically, as ascending in an elevator; it also means rising to a greater power, such as a king ascending to the throne. “Christ’s ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus’ humanity into God’s heavenly domain, whence he will come again (cf. Acts 1:11); this humanity in the meantime hides him from the eyes of me (cf. Col 3.3).” (CCC #665) What does it mean for us? Jesus precedes us, so that we, the Body of Christ, might hope to join him there some day. As the preface for the feast of the Ascension says, “he ascended, not to distance himself from our lowly state but that we, his members, might be confident of following where he, our Head and Founder, has gone before.” What is Jesus doing in heaven? Jesus is practicing his priesthood. He is interceding for us, praying for us, as “the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit.” (CCC 667).

We are told Jesus will come again. What happens in the meantime? Jesus’ ascension into heaven signifies his participation, in his humanity, in God’s power and

authority. Jesus is Lord; all power and authority is his, and the Father has put everything under his feet. Meanwhile, Christ dwells on earth in his Church. The Holy Spirit has been sent – we will celebrate that with Pentecost next week – and so we are in the final age. I’m not saying the world will end on this or that date, or even within the lifetime of anyone on earth today. We simply do not know that. But the renewal of the world is underway. There is a real, but as yet imperfect sanctity. While the kingdom is here, it is not yet fulfilled. We are in the time of the Spirit, but there is still distress, there is still evil, not all things are subject yet. Eventually Jesus will return and evil will be definitively destroyed, and the final judgment will take place. In the meantime, we are to continue to work for the building up of the kingdom.

This weekend be aware of the majesty and hope of the Ascension, and now allow the once and coming Spirit into your lives.

A reminder again that we start our new schedule next weekend, continuing through Labor Day. Masses at Vermillion at 5:00 Saturday; New Trier at 8:00 on Sunday; Hampton at 10:00 on Sunday. Confessions for Summer will be Saturday morning at 9:00 in New Trier; Saturday afternoons at 4:00 p.m. in Vermillion; Tuesday Evening at 6:00 in Vermillion and Friday mornings 9:00-9:30 in Hampton.

Join us for a reception for Mickey Kimmes in celebration of her 33 years of service at St. Pius V Sunday, June 15th in the lower level following the 8:30 am Mass. Refreshments will be available. Mickey will retire at the end of June, 2014. All are welcome!

Thank you Leola Frame for the donation of flags for the church.

A reminder to Altar Servers that they need to be at church 15 minutes prior to the beginning of Mass to help with the preparation for Mass (lighting candles etc). If you are unable to be at a Mass that you are scheduled for, you need to find a replacement.

The next church cleaning is Tuesday, June 10th following the 8:00 am Mass.

The Blood Mobile will be at St. Pius V this Wednesday, June 4th

from 1:00-7:00 pm in the lower level.

Elementary parents should have received a registration form, a volunteer sign up and an information for Vacation Bible School. VBS is Monday, June 23-Thursday, June 26, 5:30-8:00 pm. The theme is “Weird Animals, Where Jesus’ love is One-of-a-Kind”. VBS is for children entering preschool-grade 5 in the fall. There is no fee and dinner is included. Volunteers will be needed to help with food and activities. Contact Debbie Bauer at 507-263-4680 or [email protected] if you would like to volunteer. Extra forms are available at church entrances or online. The link is on the home page.

Camp Victory Lock-in forms and payment are due Saturday, June 7th. The cost is $40. Forms and payment can be dropped at the parish office. Extra form packets are available at church entrances and online. The lock-in is for youth entering grades 6-12 in the fall. A bus from Camp Victory will pick the youth up at St. Pius V at 6:00 pm Friday, June 20 and will bring them back to St. Pius V Saturday, June 21st.

St. Pius V is starting what is called the MINIStree for donations for specific events and activities for our youth programs. There are 10 Ministree donation cards on the “tree” in the front entrance of the church. If you can donate the item, please take the card and return the item and card by the date specified. BE SURE to turn in the card too. We receive a donation from Catholic United for each card returned. Please turn the items and cards in to the parish office. These Ministree donation cards are for the upcoming youth Lock-in. We are in need of other items for the lock-in as well. Items such as ear buds, gift cards, socks, nail polish, games etc. These can be dropped off at the parish office or left on the table in the youth room.

The St. Pius V Wednesday Youth Group are asking for your help with 3 ongoing summer projects for those in need. The youth will be collecting new and gently used clothing (all sizes, infants - adults) which will be available to those in need later this fall; they are collecting food donations for the food shelf, and they will be collecting items for the birthday box drive. This will include boxed cake mixes, canned frostings, birthday candles, balloons, and small toys. Donation baskets are at church entrances. You can place any donation in any of the baskets as the youth will sort them.

In Remembrance – Our Beloved Dead: Please remember in your prayers, Father Gilbert Endres, who died May 24, 2014. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on June 7, 1952. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, May 30, 2014. May Father Gilbert enjoy the fullness of life in Christ, our Resurrection and Life.

Funeral Dishes: We have had a couple of people report that their bowl is missing when they went to pick them up after a funeral. If possible, use containers that don’t have to be returned if you know you won’t pick up your bowl in a timely manner. If using your own bowl, please check carefully to make sure you have picked up the correct bowl.

Children’s Liturgy: We are hoping to revive teaching our little ones, ages 3-6 the word of God during Mass. We need about 6 more volunteers willing to help us. Doesn’t take much time. If we don’t get the 6 volunteers it will only be offered once a month. Call the parish office for information. We would like to start this in June.

FEATURED ADVERTISER BETTER AIR INCORPORATED Better Air Incorporated is owned and operated by Tom Wright, a parishioner at St. Dominic's in Northfield. He has owned his business since 1978 and specializes in heating, air conditioning and ventilation. Another option is geo-thermal heating. He has risen indeed! Congratulations to Sr Mary Noel's 3rd grade class at St John the Baptist School-Vermillion who recently performed The Risen Lord: An Easter Play to a Pre-K through 6th grade all-school assembly, including parents and community members. The original play written by Sr Noel portrays the 40 days following the resurrection of Jesus Christ during which time He prepared and commissioned his disciples to spread the good news and to baptize all in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. After this, Jesus ascended to his Father in a cloud. Students and parents prepared all of the stage props, background scenes, and costumes for the production.
