SAINT PIUS V Cannon Falls SAINT JOSEPH Miesville SAINT MARY New Trier SAINT MATHIAS Hampton SAINT JOHN BAPTIST Vermillion 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 19, 2016 the To Serve “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28) My first assignment was Saint Stephen’s in Anoka. That parish used to be run by the Crosiers. They also ran Saint Odilia’s in Shoreview. The pastor at Saint Stephen’s was Father Mike Van Sloun. He joined the Crosiers during the 1970’s as a religious brother. It was not later on in the mid 1990’s that he was ordained a priest. He was an Associate Pastor there and then became pastor. As a priest, Saint Stephen’s was all he knew and the people loved him there. Father Mike love loved being a Crosier because their Charism was about serving the people of God. However, the Crosiers had a change in what they were all about . They went from an order that was service oriented to something that was more contemplative. Subsequently, the Crosiers pulled their members from both Saint Stephen’s and Saint Odilia’s , and they were again run by diocesan priests. Father Mike said, “This is not what I signed up for. I signed up with the Crosiers to be of service, not to be a contemplative.” So, when the Crosiers left Saint Stephen’s, Father Mike stayed. It was a privilege to sign the papers that would incardinate him into the archdiocese. Father Mike had a strong influence with me on how to be a priest and a pastor. One of the things he had us associates do was be a helping hand to our neighboring parishes. Whether it be help with confessions or penance services or say a Mass form time to time, it was the neighborly thing to do. I have never lost that. If there is a need, such as a Mass to be said, or confessions to be heard and it fits my schedule, and is reasonable of distance, I am more than happy to serve. I go to the NET center for their Saturday evening 7:30 confirmation retreat confessions because I it is important to these kids to know the love of Jesus Christ. I feel that is one of the many ways I can serve the Lord. If the schedule permits, any parish within a reasonable distance asks for my assistance, I have no choice to say yes because Father Mike instilled it in me. When I left Saint Stephen’s Father Mike gave me a going away present: a statue depicting Jesus washing of the feet. He has one just like it. It reminds him, just as it reminds what we priests are supposed to be: men who are to serve and not be served.TB Fr. FROM FATHER COLE 3

Peter’s Pence. The Peter’s Pence Collection is an annual parish collection on the weekend of June 25th and 26th. Pope Francis, in Misericordiae Vultus, calls us during this Year of Mercy to “…open our eyes and see the misery of the world…and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!” Peter’s Pence is a collection uniting us with the Holy See to provide the Holy Father with the means to respond to suffering caused by war, natural disaster and religious persecution. This year, we can respond as witnesses of charity to the cries of our brothers and sisters by giving as generously as we are able to Peter’s Pence and the Holy Father. Please utilize the Peter’s Pence special collection envelopes in the back of each Church to make your contribution to this special mission and place it in the regular collection basket next weekend. You can also place a check directly in the basket with Peter’s Pence notated on the memo line. Thanks for your participation in this important endeavor.

A Man for All Seasons. St. Thomas More was the Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII from 1525-1529. Prior to the Reformation, King Henry was a staunch defender of the Catholic Faith as was Sir Thomas. The King’s loyalty to the Church remained until he was denied a divorce from his first wife, Catherine of

Aragon so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. This enraged the King which was the catalyst for his founding of the Church of England, with himself as the head who had supreme discretion in all matters of faith of his English subjects. St. Thomas was put in a position to require all Roman Catholic clergy in England to make an Oath of Supremacy to the King and he himself was required to make an Oath of Succession to ensure that Henry’s new wife would become Queen. As a man of devout faith and loyalty he was forced into an impossible position. He could have signed whatever he needed to preserve his life, but in the end King Henry had him, along with Cardinal John Fisher executed for treason. St. Thomas’ life is chronicled in a wonderful movie called “A Man for All Seasons” which was filmed in 1966. I have been

inspired by the life of St. Thomas and have adopted him as my Patron Saint. His and St. John Fisher’s Feast Day is June 22nd. Relics of these two Saint are traveling the country and will be available for veneration at the Cathedral of St. Paul Sunday, June 26, from 6:30 – 8 pm. As a reminder, I am on vacation this week, Monday June 20 through Friday, June 24th. There will be no daily Mass in the tri-parish, but Adoration will occur as normal in Hampton and New Trier. Sts. Mary, John the Baptist, Mathias, Thomas More and John Fisher….Pray for Us!

Peace, Fr. Cole

Hello! My name is Claire Kranz and I am very happy to be the new Youth Minister here at St. Joseph’s. I graduated from Saint Louis University in 2014 and currently live in Mendota Heights with parents, brother and dog. I am most excited to meet you all and learn all about St. Joseph’s Youth Ministry from YOU. In my spare time, I like coaching youth sports and hiking with my pup, Ike.

Join the Liitle Log House Lunchstand committee! We would love to add some new ideas and have help from people who can commit to helping an entire day or commit to a certain time each day, for example someone willing to come each morning for breakfast shift, lunch or cleanup. The committee usually only meets twice before the event. Please call Julie Haggerty 651-208-4053 or Gene & Laurie Stoffel 651-437-3867 to join us.

Thank you to St. Joseph’s Parish Family for helping us celebrate our 60th Wedding Anniversary last Sunday. A special thank you to Fr. Terry & Fr Leonard for the special blessings. Darold & Darlene Fox

The classes are divided into four eleven-week modules and meet Monday evenings, 7 to 9 pm, with two Saturday morning formative sessions per module. Applications are now being accepted through July 15, 2016, for the class beginning in September.
