MAY: THE MONTH OF MARY

In many cultures and in our Church, the month of May is traditionally dedicated to honoring Mary and is celebrated in many homes with altars, crowning, and rosaries to the Blessed Virgin. This month, when we start to enjoy better weather after a long and bitter winter, when flowers and plants are in full bloom, is the perfect time to pay tribute to the Mother of our Lord, receive her blessings, and pray with her. Devotions honoring Mary have been practiced for centuries and recommended by many popes. Among them, Paul VI, in the Encyclical Mense Maio (Month of May), described Mary as the month where “Christians, both in Church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the gifts of God’s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance….It is precisely because the month of May is a powerful incentive to more fervent and trusting prayer, and because during it our petitions find their way more easily to the compassionate heart of Our Blessed Lady, that it has been a custom dear to our predecessors to choose this month, dedicated to Mary, for inviting the Christian people to offer up public prayers, whenever the needs of the Church demanded it, or whenever danger hovered menacingly over the world.” In our homes, many families traditionally set up a May Altar to venerate an image or statue of Mary. The altar is usually decorated with fresh flowers, the rosary, candles, and anything that helps the family reflect on Mary’s life, her obedience to God, and her devotion and love for her Son, Jesus. Setting up the altar can become a family event for catechesis, where children are taught to love and pray to the Blessed Virgin. The altar, which becomes the center for praying the daily rosary and reflecting, is a way of connecting and renewing our spirituality in the home at a time when spring is renewing the earth after the season of winter. The candles can be lit during prayer time and the children can extinguish them once prayer has ended. “To recite the Rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ,” Blessed John Paul II said during the Year of the Rosary. Many parishes also have services honoring Mary including the May Crowning, where children crown a statue of Mary with a wreath of flowers, sing Marian hymns. During the month the Church also celebrates two important Marian feast days: Our Lady of Fatima on the 13th and the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin on the 31st. “This pious practice, by which the Blessed Virgin is honored and the Christian people enriched with spiritual gifts, gladdens and consoles us. Mary remains ever the path that leads to Christ. Every encounter with her can only result in an encounter with Christ Himself,” Paul VI wrote in Mense Maio.

En muchas culturas y en nuestra iglesia, el mes de mayo se dedica tradicionalmente a honrar a María y se celebra de muchas maneras en hogares con altares, coronaciones y rosarios a la Santísima Virgen. Este mes en que los de lugares fríos comenzamos a gozar de mejor clima después de un invierno largo y cruel, cuando ya está todo florecido, es un momento perfecto para dar homenaje a la Madre de nuestro Señor, recibir sus bendiciones y orar con ella. Las devociones en honor a María se han practicado durante muchos siglos y han sido recomendadas por muchos papas. Entre ellos, Pablo VI, en su encíclica Mense Maio (mes de mayo), describía mayo como el mes en que “los cristianos, tanto en el templo como en la intimidad del hogar, ofrecen a María desde el fondo de sus corazones un homenaje ferviente y amoroso de amor y veneración. En este mes también los dones de la misericordia de Dios bajan a nosotros desde su trono en mayor abundancia….Precisamente porque el mes de mayo es un incentivo tan fuerte a una oración ferviente y confianza y porque durante este mes nuestras peticiones encuentran más fácilmente el corazón compasivo de Nuestra Señora, que ha sido una costumbre muy querida a nuestros predecesores escoger este mes, dedicado a María, para invitar a los cristianos a ofrecer oraciones públicas, siempre que las necesidades de la iglesia lo exigieran o siempre que haya peligros amenazando al mundo”. En nuestros hogares, muchas familias construyen un altar de mayo para venerar una imagen o estatua de María. El altar normalmente se decora con flores frescas, el rosario, velas y cualquier cosa que ayude a la familia a reflexionar sobre la vida de María, su obediencia a Dios y su devoción y amor por su Hijo, Jesús. El poner el altar puede ser un acontecimiento familiar muy catequético, donde se enseña a los niños a amar a la Virgen y a rezarle. El altar, que se convierte en el centro de la recitación del rosario diariamente, es un modo de conectar y renovar nuestra espiritualidad en el hogar en un momento en que la primavera renueva la tierra después de la estación de invierno. Las velas se pueden encender durante la oración y los niños las pueden extinguir al finalizar. “Recitar el Rosario no es más que contemplar el rostro de Cristo con María”, dijo el beato Juan Pablo II durante el Año del Rosario. Muchas parroquias también tienen actos en honor a María, tales como la Coronación de Mayo, en que los niños coronan una estatua de María con una corona de flores, mientras entonan cantos marianos. Durante el mes, la Iglesia también celebra dos fiestas marianas importantes: Nuestra Señora de Fátima el 13 de mayo y la Visitación de María el 31. La práctica piadosa por la que se honra a la Virgen y el pueblo cristiano se enriquece con dones espirituales, nos alegra y consuela. María sigue siendo el camino que nos lleva a Cristo. Cada encuentro con ella causa un encuentro con el propio Cristo”, escribió Pablo VI en Mense Maio.
