NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK January 7-14, 2018

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants Campaign is working

on behalf of the Bishops, including our own Archbishop Leonard P. Blair, to promote humane migration policies towards refugees and immigrants that reflect our Catholic values. To add your voice to this urgent issue, send an electronic message to your lawmakers (see: Justiceforim-migrants.org).

National Migration Week, January 7 – 14, 2018, is an opportunity to become aware of the millions on God’s chil-dren fleeing war, persecution and poverty and to share their journey by walking with them in prayer and support.

In the words of Pope Francis: “Closeness to the poor, the refugee, the immigrant, the sick, the exploited, the elderly living alone, prisoner and all God’s other poor, will teach us a different way of resting, one which is more Christian and generous.”

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we begin a new year for each one of us and our parish as well. The feast of Christmas was a time of great joy and an opportunity for us to express our grati-tude to God for the many gifts he has given to each one of us. Christmas was an opportunity for me to remember all of you at Mass in gratitude for all that you do for our par-ish community.

2018 offers many challenges for us as a parish. We must respond to Archbishop Blair’s call for each of us to be an evangelizer in the situations we have been placed by God’s providence. We also need to be constantly alert to making our parish ministries as effective and supportive of the faith of all of our members.

A major challenge facing us is the addition on our church. Our parish has been looking forward to this for decades and we have now come to the point where the hopes of the past can be fulfilled in our time. As your pastor I ask for your strong support for all these endeavors, not only financially but especially with your prayers. Without strong prayer support, we will not be able to accomplish our goals.

I ask God’s blessings on each of you and your families as we make our way through our new year.

Father Barry

EPIPHANY HOUSE BLESSING

You will need a piece of chalk, holy water and the family! Gather the family together at the front door and pray the Our Father. The prayer leader writes the following over the front and back doors: 20+C+M+B+18. The numbers repre-sent the year 2018; the crosses stand for the four seasons; the letters stand for the names of the three Magi: Caspar, Mel-choir, and Balthasar. Now walk through the house as a fami-ly, sprinkle the rooms with Holy Water, and ask Christ to bless your home in this New Year of Grace. This tradition blesses your home, everyone who lives in your home and also those who come to visit. It is an age-old tradition.

Christmas Stockings / The Giving Tree

I just received an email from our Social Worker for Covenant to Care that I know this parish needs to read. It is because of your love and outreach that so many people had a beautiful Christmas! This is the note that I must share with you. Thank you so much and God Bless!

Eileen, you have no idea how many social workers you and Pat and the whole parish have helped!!! I spent 4hrs yesterday in my backyard separating the toys for each of my workers. Between the gifts and the stockings, each child on their case load has a gift! Plus, my daughter and I used both our cars to bring the leftovers to the office this morning and I created the Zyla toy workshop, social workers are shopping for their kids on their caseloads. In all my years working with your church, I have never had to make 2 trips, nor use a second car to get every-thing!!!!

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dorothy Zyla Social Work Supervisor Department of Children and Families 1 Grove Street New Britain, CT 06051 860-832-5462 One Vision. One Focus. One Team.

May all the days of all the years

That God has still in store.

Be filled with every joy and grace

To bless you more and more.

This well known English Christmas carol is more than a repetitious tune with pretty phrases and strange gifts.

“The Twelve Days of Christmas”

is a song with different levels of meaning. From 1558 to 1829, the Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. During this period, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was written in England as a catechism song for young Catholics. The

hidden meanings of the song’s gifts were intended to help the children remember lessons of their faith.

Instead of referring to an earthly suitor, the “true love” men-tioned in the song refers to God Himself.

The “me” who receives the presents is symbolic to every bap-tized person, and the “partridge in a pear tree” is Jesus Christ.

The other symbols are:

Two turtle doves—The Old and New Testaments;

Three French hens - Faith, Hope and Charity;

Four calling birds - the four Gospels;

Five golden rings - the first five books of the Old Testament,

which give the history of man’s fall from grace;

Six geese a-laying - the six days of creation;

Seven swans a-swimming - seven gifts of the Holy Spirit;

Eight maids a-milking - the eight Beatitudes;

Nine ladies dancing - nine fruits of the Holy Spirit;

Ten lords a-leaping - the Ten Commandents;

Eleven pipers piping - the eleven faithful disciples;

Twelve drummers drumming - the twelve points of belief in the

Apostles’ Creed. 3

I am very happy to tell you that as the result of efforts by volun-teers of the meatloaf ministry during the calendar year 2017, 175 meatloaves were baked and delivered to the House of Bread in Hartford and used in meals for the homeless. That number of meatloaves resulted in about 1,100 meals for the homeless served in dinner entrees, sandwiches and/or additional protein for breakfasts. Our numbers increased for the first time over the past few years, resulting in our ability to produce about 300 more meals. Meatloaves were collected 11 months of the year--with no collection in August. I thank all of you who have cooperated in this ministry, and I especially appreciate the help of John Griffin who picks up the meatloaves and delivers them to the House of Bread in Hartford, and whose wife, Debbie, also bakes meatloaves. I also appreciate the generosity of those who donate meatloaves monthly and also those who spontaneously donate meatloaves without being called.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for all that you do; and you can reach me at 860-508-9650
