Dear Friends in Christ,

I believe you had a good and relaxing summer. I welcome all of you back to our regular schedule praying that we have yet another successful year. The theme for our parish this year is Come Follow Me and I Will Make You Fishers of Men. Matt. 4:19. Jesus is calling all of us to have a stake in His ministry here in St. Patrick.

As we begin I would like to share with you, on page 4 of this bulletin, the report of our just concluded Fis-cal Year (July 2017 – June 2018) as well as the 2019 budget. The summary of the revenue with expens-

es is only meaningful when we consider the life of the parish which your generosity makes possible. Page 5 of this bulle-tin highlights some of the many ways that the parish benefits from your involvement. Thank you for your stewardship. I will speak to this report at all the Masses next weekend.

In order to offer you and your families the opportunities of following Jesus this year, we will hold our Annual Ministry Fair after all the Masses next weekend. Please take some time, this week, to peruse our website at www.StPatrickMcHenry.org for the list of our many ministries. You should also visit with Ministry Chairs and members next weekend and then prayerfully consider the ways that you can share your time and talent with the parish in response to Jesus’ invitation. In what ministry will you and your family follow and become Fishers of Men for Him?

To assist you and your families, we will have Ministry Commitment Cards in the pews next weekend in the prayerful hope that you will commit to His call. Please fill out and return them during offertory in the weekend that follows. Please feel free to contact me, the staff and or any of the Ministry Chairpersons with your questions and interests, and let us know how we can best serve your needs. Thank you.

This weekend the Gospel reading from St. Mark presents the healing of a deaf-mute by Jesus. This encounter is more than a physical healing. It is a sign of God’s superabundant life breaking open the closed human condition. It is a sign of Salvation! When we follow Jesus, He commands us “Be opened!” Our ears are opened to hear the Good News and our tongues are loosened to proclaim it. We tend to think of salvation in terms of heaven and the hereafter. That is one as-pect. The readings open us to salvation as encountering and hearing God now. As a parish family I pray that our en-counter with Jesus at the Eucharistic table may open us, heal us of any infirmities but most importantly, may He lead us to follow, and with him become Fishers of Men and Woman for eternal life.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

St. Patrick Feasibility Study Dear Friends in Christ,

We need your input!

The Diocese of Rockford has approved our parish’s request for a Feasibility Study that will begin the week of Sept. 10th in order to determine the viability and standing of our parish in view of future projects. This comprehensive sur-vey of the entire parish follows an extensive process involving the Pastoral & Finance Councils and staff among other committees. Before finalizing on any decisions of long term plans for our parish, we need to hear from you, our parishioners. Thanks to your commitment and love for the Lord we are blessed with a vibrant and growing faith family. In gratitude it is incumbent on us to make provisions for the growth that we have experienced.

After careful consideration of many factors relevant to our ministries, our Pastoral and Finance Councils, staff and other committees have acknowledged our need for a Parish Hall. As exciting as this may be, we did not want to proceed until we hear from you. Accordingly, you will receive detailed information for a Feasibility Study. Your input is invaluable as we plan the next step in the long history of our parish. This process is extremely important and I encourage every family to participate. Your feedback will enable us to determine the support which exists for this exciting project and to make other plans for our faith community. If we choose to move forward, the feasibility study will also provide us with information to identify prospective campaign leaders and to establish a realistic campaign goal.

The Steier Group, whom we have engaged as our development firm, will compile the information gathered during this process and present it to parish leadership. A generous parishioner has donated the cost of this study, so there is no cost to the parish. After reviewing the results, a decision on how to proceed will be made.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

Vocation Corner

In our first reading from the Prophet Isaiah this weekend, God has a message for those who are fearful. “Be strong, fear not!” he says. God our Father always encourages us to trust in Him and to not let fear get in the way of our mission. At its core, fear is a sense of isolation. When we are afraid, ultimately we are feeling alone and helpless. It is through that fear that we lose our hope, and when our hope is gone we lose our peace as well. Without that interior peace, it is tough to the disciples that Jesus calls us to be. Therefore, we need to do our best to always be strong and fear not! God does not call us to be timid in our vocations, but rather to be coura-geous. Be bold in the way that you surrender your life to Jesus Christ. Hold nothing back! With your fearless heart, Jesus will be able to mold you into a true disciple and do great things in your life. Place all of your hope and trust in God, and see what incredible deeds He wants to work through you.

September 27: The Father Michael McGivney Story

Father Michael McGivney is a documen-tary that brings to life the story of one of America’s most extraordinary Catholic priests. Born in Connecticut of Irish immi-grant parents just a few years before the

Civil War, Michael McGivney grew up at a time when millions of Catholic immigrants were struggling to overcome poverty and prejudice. As a parish priest in the gritty New England manufacturing town of New Haven, he made a deep impact on his community, earning the respect of the Protestant establish-ment and the love of his parishioners at St. Mary’s Church. Emboldened to care for families threatened by the death of the breadwinner, Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Colum-bus, a mutual benefit society that today remains the world’s largest Catholic lay organization with 1.8 million members in 13 nations. This film offers a rare glimpse into the life of an ex-traordinary priest and visionary leader. Father Michael McGivney celebrates the triumphs and tribulations of a priest who may very well be America’s first canonized parish priest. This movie is not rated, but is suitable for all ages.

Many of us have probably experienced a time when we realized we really needed to get to the grocery store and restock the fridge and pantry. And most of us are fortunate to be able to shop for the necessities we need on a

regular basis. Some in our community aren't as fortunate, lacking the resources to purchase food and basic toilet-ries. Vincentians have visited members of our community who truly have no food to eat, who have no shampoo or even bathroom tissue. For those individuals a visit from SVdP means a delivery of desperately needed food and toiletries, an opportunity to offer a prayer of thanksgiving and the chance to regain their dignity. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

“Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. Breath wisdom into our prayers and labors. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord.” USCCB Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection, “Promise to Protect” Bookmark.

Parish Information

Sacraments Baptism of Infants or children

under 7 years of age: You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism. To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This is a one session class that is held on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
