Sacrament of Reconciliation

St. Joseph - Sunday 11:45 am St. Olaf - Wednesday 5:00 pm

SAINT

JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH

As I begin, I want to point out a few details:

The Bishop has not lifted his dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. In English that means no one has to return to Mass at this time.

The elderly and those with conditions that would predispose them to a negative outcome if they were to contract COVID-19, are encouraged to not come to Mass at this time.

When, or if, you decide to come to Mass:

Everyone is encouraged, but not required, to wear a face covering. Social distancing has been factored into entry, seating arrangements, Communion, and exit procedures. Hand Sanitizer is available for every-one as they come in and before Communion. Items that multiple people would touch, like Hymnals have been removed. The congregation will not be singing. Doors are propped open so they do not need to be touched. Pews are sanitized between Masses.

I wanted to point out to you some of the measures that we have been directed to do in order to make coming to Mass as safe as possible. The Diocese has wanted to ensure that we are following all the safety pre-cautions that we can possibly comply with to minimize risk of exposure to the virus. As I go into this next part, it is important that you understand that.

I have passed along information that Dane County had abruptly changed course and limited our attendance numbers to only 50 people. The first two emergency orders that the county had released had recognized houses of worship as essential businesses and were allowed a 25% of capacity opening. Emergency order number three, which came out after the Diocese had publically stated our re-opening at 25%, abruptly changed this and put us into a category that allowed only the 50 people maximum number. Just so you understand, under the order, shopping malls, bars, restaurants, spas, gyms, salons, museums, movie theaters, community centers, bowling alleys, skating rinks, trampoline parks, and more are not subject to the 50-person cap.

We congratulate and welcome to the body of Christ those baptized on June 6 at St. Olaf:

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Next weekend, June 13/14, is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). To celebrate this, at the end of the 5:00 PM Mass ONLY at St. Olaf and the 10:45 AM Mass at St. Joseph, there will be Eucharistic Exposition and Benediction with a 1/2 hour for Adoration. For those attending the Saturday night Mass, please plan on

staying if possible. For those unable to stay for Adoration, we ask that you depart quietly.

I have passed along through social media some of the later develop-ments. The Diocese has contacted the non-profit “The Beckett Fund for Religious Liberty” which sent a lengthy letter to Madison and Dane Coun-ty leaders and the shared Health Department stating that Dane County was violating long standing norms regarding the treatment of religious houses of worship and in effect were in violation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution and the Constitution of the State of Wisconsin. Bishop Hying had made multiple attempts to contact the Mayor of Madison, the Dane County Executive, and the Director of Public Health, none of his outreach attempts were returned initially. On Wednesday, June 3, the day the legal letter was delivered, the Director of Public Health finally contacted the Bishop. She indicated that they would not give on their position to limit to 50 people in attendance.

On Thursday evening, June 4, Bishop Hying sent a letter to the priests of Dane County. In that letter he gave each pastor the freedom to use their own prudential judgement regarding whether to continue with the 50-person limit, if that was necessary in a given case, or to open to 25% capacity with his full support.

I have considered this choice and I have decided to open to 25% of capacity. This allows for 100 people per Church, per Mass to come to Mass if they choose. We had already committed to following the guide-lines that were set out to help to reduce the risk of spread of the virus. People continue to have a choice in whether to return to Mass or not. This is not a decision that I come to lightly. Making the choice to poten-tially violate the health department order—regardless of its constitutionality—is not easy for someone who has multiple times taken an oath that states that they will “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, Foreign and domestic, that I bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” However, this situation is clearly unjust. Religious liberty is being unjustly curtailed. It’s time to take a stand on this. I know that some of you will disagree with this decision. I respect your right to disagree. But, I think all of us have gotten a bit of a lesson lately on the need to protest injustices. If you do not, they contin-ue to perpetuate. I hope that I have laid out the case for why we have come to this decision. I am willing to listen if you have a viewpoint that differs from mine.

In summary, this weekend we will be opening at 25%. We will do this in a first-come first-served format. If we reach our capacity limit, you will be given the choice to leave or to wait in your car and you can watch on Facebook Live and receive Communion outside. I thank you for your understanding and support.

There are several photos that have been left in church from during the pandemic. Please pick them up in the Narthex.

Next weekend is Corpus Christi, The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body

and Blood of the Lord. Normally we would have had a procession and

possibly a picnic, but the virus had its say on that this year. Instead we

will have a half hour of adoration following the 5:00 PM Mass at St. Olaf

and the 10:45 AM Mass at St. Joseph, followed with Benediction. You

are encouraged to stay the extra time in worship. If you cannot, please

leave in silence.

God bless,

Fr. Vince
