Originally, we had anticipated having it back by mid-July. However, because of the pandemic, the parts factory in New York had to close temporarily. Although they have since reopened, they have a significant backlog of orders. Hopefully the parts will be on their way in the coming weeks; once we have the parts, it will take about a month for the work to be completed. We should have our Steinway back in early-mid autumn. Once it is returned, the new strings and pins will need time to settle into place. Keep this in mind as you attend Mass or listen online – the piano may sound out of tune from time to time! This is a normal part of the restoration process. It will be getting tuned frequently, but it may fall out of tune faster than the tuning schedule can keep up with. Eventually, it will be stable once more. We are so grateful for the gifts made last year that provided us with the funds to refurbish this worthy instrument. It will serve the parish well for many years to come. CONCERT SERIES: The Saint Olaf Music Series will be operating on a very reduced basis for the 2020-2021 season, due to the pandemic. Usually by this time of year, the entire program year is planned, the contracts signed, and publicity is in the mail. Because of the unknowns and uncertainties, we will be making final plans and announcements closer to the dates of most events. I wrote in a previous bulletin how current science suggests that singing in groups may be an efficient vector for the spread of COVID-19; because so many of the staple events on our concert series are choral-based with larger ensembles, these have all been cancelled for the upcoming program year. However, we will have some smaller, safer events on offer. For the past two years, we have had a Wednesday noontime organ recital series in the fall, featuring talented local organists. That will continue this year, but instead of holding a recital every Wednesday, from September thru early December, we will plan to have one organ recital per month, from September through June. For these recitals, there will be no admission charge, and a freewill donation will be taken. We will follow the same Archdiocesan safety protocols as we do for public worship. To celebrate the restoration of the Steinway piano, we plan to feature it in periodic chamber music recitals. And perhaps in January, depending on the climate of the pandemic, the latest science, and guidelines from the medical community, we will revisit any possibilities for larger ensembles to perform in the spring. Stay tuned to our website, bulletin, and Facebook page for updates and announcements about the planned recitals, and any other offerings on this year’s limited concert series! VIRTUAL CHOIRS: Perhaps you have watched, or at least heard about, the virtual choir projects that we have put together. So far, we have made two videos. The first video, for Pentecost, featured a Concertato on the hymn “O Spirit, All-Embracing;” text by Delores Dufner, arranged by Richard Proulx. The most recent video features newly composed text and music that narrates a vignette of the life of Saint Olaf. If you have not seen the virtual choir videos, you can find the links on our website, or click here if you are reading the bulletin digitally: youtu.be/ FNOaFeeBFg4 and youtu.be/KbAkjyrtlEY. We will continue making virtual choir videos until such time that our choirs can physically return to sing at Mass; and perhaps after then, also! Virtual choir projects are incredibly fun and fulfilling, and are a great way to connect and grow when we can’t sing together. As of now I am not sure if we will do one during the fall, but we will certainly be putting something special together for Christmas. If you would like to participate in an upcoming virtual choir project, we would love to have you! Feel free to get in touch with me at [email protected]; or my direct office line at 612-767-7628. 215 SOUTH 8TH ST, MINNEAPOLIS, MN 55402
