HOPEFUL EXPECTATION Our liturgical year begins with the season of Advent, a time of hopeful expectation of the coming of the Lord. On the First Sunday of Advent we look forward to the end of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new day. Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word will have instructed all people, radiating God’s “light” (teachings) into all of human society. Only when humanity walks “in the light of the Lord” (Isaiah 2:5), when all people desire to be instructed “in [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set right and our deepest longings fulfilled. The reading from Romans calls us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sunday’s scriptures proclaim our Christian faith that Jesus is the One who will finally come to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading All the peoples shall stream toward the Lord’s house (Isaiah 2:1-5). Psalm Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord (Psalm 122). ESPERAR CON GOZO Nuestro año litúrgico comienza con el tiempo de Adviento, una temporada de expectativa por la venida del Señor. En el Primer Domingo de Adviento anticipamos el fin de los tiempos cuando despertaremos al amanecer del nuevo día de Cristo. Hoy escuchamos a Isaías hablar del día en que el poder de Dios habrá traído paz universal y la Palabra de Dios habrá instruido a todos los pueblos, irradiando la “luz” (enseñanzas) de Dios a toda la raza humana. Sólo cuando la humanidad camina “a la luz del Señor” (Isaías 2:5), cuando todos los pueblos deseen marchar “por sus sendas” (Isaías 2:3), el mundo se enderezará y nuestros más profundos anhelos serán cumplidos. The Altar Servers assist the priest and the deacon in helping to bring the assembly to a fuller understanding of the liturgy and a greater love for God.

We are recruiting NEW volunteers who want to become Altar Servers. Children and teens who have received First Communion and attend Mass on a regular basis are welcome to service in this beautiful ministry. Training will be provided.

The Seven Sisters Apostolate is a call to strengthen the Church by ensuring that a Holy Hour is prayed each day of the week for the sole intention of a specific priest or bishop. The initial recipient of a Seven Sisters group is their parish pastor; the intention is directed towards the office of the shepherd more than the individual. We would like to begin this prayer apostolate at St. Michael and are seeking seven women who feel called to offer the prayerful sacrifice of one Holy Hour a week on the same day each week for the sole intention of our Pastor. This past Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th of November, these two groups completed their wonderful journey and graduated from the Prayer and Life Workshops. Learning to pray in order to learn to live: where you improve your relationship with Our Lord, yourself and with others. This workshop helps you reach interior freedom and emotional stability.

Los pasados lunes 18 y martes 19 de noviembre, estos dos grupos concluyeron una maravillosa travesía y se graduaron de los Talleres de Oración y Vida. Aprendiendo a orar para poder aprender a vivir: en donde podrás mejorar tu relación con Nuestro Señor, contigo mismo y con otros. Este taller ayuda a alcanzar una libertad interior y estabilidad emocional.

MAGI TREE PROJECT - ÁRBOL DE LOS REYES MAGOS This is the final reminder that all Magi Tree wrapped gifts with their ornament attached are to be returned to the blue carts in the church narthex no later than Wednesday, December 4, 2019. Gift cards should be returned to the locked holiday mailbox in the narthex.

If you or someone from you family took an ornament from the Magi Tree, a commitment was made to return a wrapped gift with the ornament attached. If not, then either a child or senior will be deprived from receiving a gift this Christmas.

…that the origins of Advent can be traced back to the Church in France. In the 4th Century, the Church in France used the period before Epiphany as a time of preparation for baptism. It was called “St. Martin’s Lent” for the 40 days that started on Nov. 11, the feast of St. Martin of Tours. Advent as we know it today was developed in Rome. Pope Gregory I (Saint Gregory the Great) in the late 6th or early 7th Century composed many of the prayers, antiphons and psalm responses. Many themes and ideas we now know can be traced to the Roman Advent season.

En el Siglo IV, la Iglesia de Francia usaba el periodo anterior a la Epifanía como un tiempo de preparación para el bautismo.
