NOTES FROM THE PASTOR
Lent. A time of prayer, alms-giving and FASTING
What’s this fasting thing all about anyway? Why is it that every major religion in the world emphasizes the need for fasting? Catholics have an obligation to do some kind of fasting, especially during Lent. WHY??? Is it because there’s something in Catholic DNA that tells us that we have to make ourselves uncomfortable? I hope not! Is it because our bodies are bad and only our Spirit is good? Absolutely not. As a matter of fact that particular belief is called Jansenism, and it was condemned as a heresy by the Church 500 years ago. God, our creator, when He came among us as a human being (Jesus the Christ) sanctified … made holy … human flesh. Our bodies, as St. Paul tells us are Temples of God, Temples of the Holy Spirit. Our bodies are not bad or evil, they are holy! So, then, why fast?
Fasting focuses us on our hunger. At first our physical hunger, but then our deepest hungers. What do we all HUNGER for? Our most obvious hungers are for food, water, breathable air, shelter, warmth and feelings of safety. Deeper hungers are for love and acceptance, belonging,. The deepest hungers are for a deep awareness of the presence of God in my life, the hunger for meaningful connections in my life, and feeling like my life means something more than just taking up space. We ALL hunger for these and so many other things. We all have a God sized hunger in our soul that can only be filled by God.
Fasting makes us more aware of that fundamental hunger for God and the things of God.
So, try fasting this Lent. Turn off your devices for 8 hours! Yikes! Eat less and give to a soup kitchen or other program that feeds the poor. Ask God to make you more forgiving, more patient, more understanding. If we ask God for the spiritual gifts of forgiveness and patience, God will always give them to us. 100% of the time!
Try some kind of fasting. You’ll be amazed how hungry you are for the good things of God.

Statement from Cardinal O’Malley “Given the importance of this feast in the life of the archdiocese and in the lives of so many of our families, I am granting a dispensation from the Friday Lenten abstinence on March 17, 2017, to those who wish to take advantage of this opportunity,” he wrote. He added that Catholics who do should consider another sacrifice or act of charity to make up for it.

St. Mary Parish Family 2nd Sunday of Lent March 12, 2017
Hunger knows no season. The Knights of Columbus is asking for your support for this very important Food for Families program. During the Lenten season, we are asking each parishioner to contribute one can of food per day during the 40 days of Lent. Please bring your contribution to church and leave them at the back of the church. Members of Saint John Vianney will collect the cans after the 11:30am Sunday Mass.
This week, Catholics across the Archdiocese are invited to pledge their support to the annual Catholic Appeal. If you were unable to make your pledge at Mass, please take a pledge form from the back of the church or pledge online at bostoncatholicappeal.org. Thank you for your prayers for a successful Catholic Appeal.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Please join us, with your Child Abuse Prevention Team, on April 1st, at a Mass of Appreciation for all serving to keep our children safe. For 15 years the Archdiocese has been at the forefront of child abuse prevention and the Office of Child Advocacy would like thank those serving in this vital ministry. I have had the pleasure of visiting parishes throughout the Archdiocese and am encouraged by the dedication of Pastors, Protecting God’s Children Facilitators, CORI Coordinators, Religious Education Teachers, Faith Formation Coordinators and many other employees and volunteers who give their time to further the Church’s commitment to child protection. Sadly, child abuse is an epidemic in today’s society, but the Catholic Church is taking the lead in prevention education. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Mark O’Connell on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 6:00 PM at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 573 Washington Street Newton, MA A reception with light refreshments will follow.
Special “Easter Flower” envelopes are available at the back of the church for anyone to remember their loved ones on Easter. This will allow us to plan more effectively for our Easter décor. Thank you for your generosity.
S a i n t o f t h e W e e k
The patron saint of Ireland, Patrick was born in Roman Britain. He describes his life and ministry, including his work to convert the Irish people, in his short autobiography and testimony, Confessions. Kidnapped at age 16 by Irish raiders and sold into slavery in Ireland, his time spent in captivity transformed him spiritually. He was a lonely shepherd for six years before escaping and returning home.
After returning home, his dream of converting the Irish from pagan belief propelled him to priestly studies in Gaul (now France). In about 432, Pope Celestine I consecrated him as a bishop and sent him to Ireland. For nearly 30 years, he preached tirelessly, made countless converts, founded monasteries, and established the primatial see at Armagh in modern-day Northern Ireland. Toward the end of his life, he made a 40-day retreat on Croagh Patrick mountain in present-day County Mayo. That gave rise to the pilgrimages that are made on the mountain to this day. Stories that Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity and drove snakes from the island are unconfirmed legend.

The glimpse of glory the disciples received at the Transfiguration provided a moment of clarity. At times, we also see some of God’s majesty. These times might be while witnessing a birth, when feeling at peace, or while immersed in music. Such glimpses may be rare gifts but can give us the respite to go on. Are we open to these moments or do we rationalize them away? Can we accept the movement of the Spirit blowing in our world?
