About the retreat. In our Baptism, we received the Holy Spirit, and were baptized,priest, prophet and king.These identities form the basis of who we are in Christ and giveus the ability to live asdisciples in Christs name. Themonthof Februaryhas becomeknown in our
nationasthe“monthofpresidents”.Despiteallthe
wrong reasons for such a designation, it still has
valueforus. Februaryisprobablyoneofthemost
dif!icultintheyear;itiscold,thesnowturnsdirty
and the ice never seems to melt. It is a time for
peopletostayindoorsifpossible.!!
Such actions on our part are not good for the
department stores, and so...they come up with
“Presidents Day � Presidents Week � Presidents
Month!’ Thepaperswill be !illedwith all sorts of
sales toenticeusoutof thewarmthofourhomes
and into the bitter � cold streets, in the hopeswe
willrushtothelocalstoresfortheir“unbelievable”
sales. Let’s face it, that is the real origin of
presidents month. We have had many presidents
butonlytwowhowereborninFebruary.!!
Happily though, these two !inemencangiveusan
example we can use for this month’s “Union of
prayer.” George Washington, our !irst president,
cherished the meaning of freedom. He gave up
manyof the luxurieshehad, to leadanembattled
armyagainstoneofthestrongestmilitaryforcesof
hisday.Why?Becausehisbeliefinapersonsright
to live free, overshadowed all the rewards a king
could bestow upon him. Abraham Lincoln, our
sixteenthpresident,knewthata freepeoplecould
notlivewithoutunity.Heknewanationcouldnot
bedividedandremain free, justasahomecannot
bedividedandliveinlove.!!
“President’sMonth”foryouandmecanalsohavea
deep spiritual meaning. The two truths that
WashingtonandLincolnliveandsacri!icedforare,
in reality, gifts of God that help us live with one
another in peace. We, members of the “union of
prayer,” !ind our greatest blessing in the fact that
wearea“union.”Wedonotprayasindividualsbut
as one body. We exercise our freedom and our
unity, to pray for the church, and our sisters and
brothers in Christ. Our unity and of course our
faith,iswhatmakesour“unionofprayer”effective.!!

A teenager inOregonwent toa legal clinic foranabortion. Whenshetriedtoleaveawaiting
room inorder togetmore informationabout theprocedure,she found that the door to the room was locked from theoutside! Shenevergotherquestionsanswered,norwasshetoldabouttherisksofabortion.Shesuedtheclinicandwon.!!
