PASTOR’S PARISHABLES
Checks for $2,554 & $1,622 came to the rectory
recently, 1 for SS Peter & Paul & 1 for St. Mary’s.
These were the 18th
of 20 quarterly parish
distribution of funds by the Catholic Foundation of
Southern MN from the 2013 Rooted in Faith (RIF)
capital campaign. As you may recall: According to
the plan of this campaign, every parish was to
receive 25% of funds up to its goal & 75% of funds
over goal. (Since 2013, distributions have been
made to parishes as pledges are fulfilled.) I’ve
reported this numerous times before; however, the
last time, the 17th
of the distributions, I didn’t make
room to include all this. That 17th
distribution
brought $1,523 to SS P/P & $733 to St. M.
To review & update the numbers in that very
successful capital campaign:
At SS Peter & Paul:
● $230,648 was our parish goal
● $247,604 (!) was pledged & received thru 3/31/18
● $ 50,813 has already been distributed to us
● $ 2,554 was added last week.
At St. Mary:
● $71,634 was our parish goal
● $92,730 (!) was pledged & received thru 9/30/17
● $20,939 has already been distributed to us
● $ 1,622 was added last week.
“The Catholic Foundation of Southern
Minnesota”—as I’ve said before, more than once—
is an autonomous Minnesota nonprofit corporation
recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity & is
separate from the Diocese of Winona legally,
financially & organizationally. It supports parishes,
schools & ministries with the necessary resources to
be vibrant centers of faith & service in southern MN
& to assist faithful Catholics in fulfilling their
stewardship. Since its founding in 1991, the
Foundation has faithfully managed & distributed
contributions according to donors' wishes in areas of
greatest need. The Foundation stands as a center of
Catholic philanthropy across southern MN in service
of Catholic Responsible Investing & sophisticated
planned giving that celebrates our Catholic
identity. Over the life of the Foundation, nearly $80
million have been redistributed back to the southern
MN community made possible by the generosity of
Catholics like us. The Foundation is handling the
funds raised by the RIF campaign.
The Rooted In Faith campaign—as I’ve said
before, more than once— was (is) the highly
successful 2013 capital campaign of the diocese,
raising $26.2 million in pledges & gifts. (The
pledges to RIF have a 5-year redemption period—for
those who chose to give support over time instead of
in a 1-time-only gift.) The RIF is now in its 5th
year
& has 4 purposes:
1. Priests’ pension plan
2. The renovation of our diocesan seminary
3. Our own local project (rectory residence renovation)
4. $2 million that would have been raised in a 2013
Catholic Ministries Appeal but which was cancelled
for 1 year so as to not compete with the capital
campaign. (Other than this $2 million, the diocese does not
benefit directly from the funds raised by the RIF campaign.)
This Sunday’s Eucharist feast (“Body & Blood of
Christ Sunday”) sent me to the Catechism of the
Catholic Church for a succinct teaching about “the
fruits of holy communion” (paragraphs 1391-1397).
This is a good review for us:
1. Causes an intimate union with Christ
2. preserves, increases, & renews the life of grace
received at baptism
3. cleanses past sins & preserves from future sins
4. strengthens the unity
among members of the Church
5. fosters a commitment to the poor.
This is something we may wish to keep from this
year’s Body & Blood of Christ Sunday, so we know
what to look for, hope for, pray for.
Related to this: The tabernacle & “reserved hosts”
are mentioned on this Sunday’s feast. Hosts in the
tabernacle are for the homebound. They are for sick
calls. They are for viaticum, which is what we call
communion when it’s given to the dying (the “last
rite,” to use a word from our past). The new General
Instruction of the Roman Missal affirms the
importance of receiving communion that has been
consecrated at mass (not those reserved in the
tabernacle): “It is desirable that the faithful, just as
the priest himself is bound to do, receive the Lord’s
Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass &
that...they participate in the chalice so that even by
means of the signs Communion will stand out more
clearly as a participation in the sacrifice actually
being celebrated”. Sometimes of course we don’t
have a choice. Because our guess isn’t always good
about how many hosts to include on the gifts table
for communion at that particular mass, we end up
with far too many in the tabernacle for use with the
absent.

the statue at the cemetery. Due to the possibility of
injury and a recommendation from the insurance
company, the two smaller statues had to be removed.
We would like to replace them and fix the base so that it
is stable. One half of the collection this year will be put
towards this repair work, and added to the memorials
that have already been designated for this project. Your
support for the upkeep of our cemetery is so very much
