Diocese of Palm Beach

July 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Natural Family Planning Awareness week is the annual national educational campaign sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to promote Natural Family Planning (NFP). This year, NFP Awareness week be celebrated from July 19 through July 25 under the theme: Live the truth and beauty of God’s plan for married love! The campaign offers us a wonderful opportunity to share the good news about God’s perfect design for marriage and responsible parenting.

In sacramental marriage we are called to live with Christ-like love; to freely give of ourselves as a

gift to our beloved. Married love is fundamentally a call to fruitfulness and, in response to this call, the Church proposes Natural Family Planning. Today’s NFP provides a modern, scientific method available to couples for planning their families by enabling them to participate in God’s creative action without breaking the inseparable link between the unitive and procreative meanings of the conjugal (marital) act. As NFP becomes a way of life, husbands and wives cooperate with each other and with God in responsibly planning their family and avoid the devastating spiritual and physical harm caused by artificial contraceptive methods.

During Natural Family Planning Awareness week, we also celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the

papal encyclical Humanae Vitae. Issued in 1968 by Pope Paul VI, this encyclical prophetically articulates the grave consequences of the use of artificial and illicit means of birth control, including a general lowering of morality, increased infidelity, and devaluing of women (HV, no. 17). Unfortunately, today’s headlines confirm the devastating accuracy of his predictions and demonstrate the destructive consequences for our families. In contrast, couples who practice NFP enjoy greater marital stability and suffer divorce at only a fraction of the rate of divorce among first time marriages overall.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those married couples who live out their marriage

commitment to free, total, faithful and fruitful love. I encourage all married couples and those preparing for marriage to reflect on their current or future marriages and how they can authentically and responsibly fulfill their commitment to fruitful love. If you have not yet considered NFP or have questions, I invite you to investigate and discover the richness of NFP. Please visit our website at www.diocesepb.org/naturalfamilyplanning for resources and additional information or call 561-775-9539.

With every prayerful wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach

WHAT DOES OUR FAITH TEACH? THE CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY (1 OF 7)

The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They “are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs” (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. In the following weeks we will touch on one of the seven Works of Mercy.

FEED THE HUNGRY There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit otherers who do not have those same resources. Having delicious food at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner? Donate to a Thanksgiving or Christmas food drive so everyone can have something to eat. Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry. The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local food pantry, soup kitchen, or neighbor in need. Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need.

DONATE YOUR OLD ELECTRONICS AND TONER CARTRIDGES

Unclutter! The Youth Ministry at St. Lucie gladly will take your old digital cameras, iPods and other mp3 players, GPS devices, laptops but not tabletop computers. Cell phones and computer toner cartridges are gladly accepted but please do not include cords or chargers. Your old items earn extra dollars for our Youth Ministry. Drop your electronic donations off at the Parish Office Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM.

It’s that simple!

ALL ARE WELCOME Each of us can make our parish a more welcoming place to newcomers, persons with disabilities, and persons with special needs. Here are a few ideas:

If you see a parent struggling with a child’s behavior, offer a friendly smile, a sympathetic nod, or a helping hand.

If you see a person struggling to get in, hold open a door, scoot down in the pew, or offer to carry something.

If you see a person exhibiting unusual behavior, understand that it might be a sign of a disability. Embrace the person as a child of God.

God is our help in trouble; if you worry, you are on your own.

AMERICA NECESITA A FATIMA

Amen.
