OUR MISSION

The mission of Saint Louis University is the pursuit of truth for the greater glory of God and for the service of humanity. The University seeks excellence in the fulfillment of its corporate purposes of teaching, research, health care and service to the community.

The University is dedicated to leadership in the continuing quest for understanding of God’s creation and for the discovery, dissemination and integration of the values, knowledge and skills required to transform society in the spirit of the Gospels. As a Catholic, Jesuit university, this pursuit is motivated by the inspiration and values of the Judeo-Christian tradition and is guided by the spiritual and intellectual ideals of the Society of Jesus.

Saint Louis University is a world-class Catholic, Jesuit institution educating nearly 13,000 students on two dynamic, urban campuses — in St. Louis, Missouri, and Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1818, the University will soon celebrate its bicentennial.

With a legacy of innovative academics and research, compassionate health care and faithful service, Saint Louis University attracts a diverse community of scholars who push intellectual boundaries in pursuit of creative, meaningful ways to impact the world, striving to serve a higher purpose and seek a greater good.

Higher purpose. Greater good.

JESUITS BEGIN TEACHING THE STUDENTS OF SAINT LOUIS COLLEGE, FIRST AT THEIR SEMINARY, THEN IN DOWNTOWN ST. LOUIS. The Society of Jesus officially takes on administration of the school, leading it to its charter as a university in 1832.

SLU ESTABLISHES THE FIRST MEDICAL SCHOOL WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. The University would also go on to start the first law school (1843) and first business school (1910) in the West.

SLU MOVES TO ITS CURRENT LOCATION IN MIDTOWN ST. LOUIS. The whole of the University’s operations is contained in one building, DuBourg Hall.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SLU

SAINT LOUIS COLLEGE, WHICH WOULD BECOME SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY, IS FOUNDED on the banks of the Mississippi River by Bishop Louis William DuBourg as the first institution of higher learning west of the Mississippi.

THE SCHOOL OF LAW ADMITS FIVE FEMALE STUDENTS — at a time when most elite law schools are still closed to women.

THE FIRST LAY MEMBERS ARE ADDED TO SLU’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES, making SLU the first major Catholic

university to be led by both lay and clergy.

SLU BECOMES THE FIRST LOCATION OF THE NATIONAL CAMPUS KITCHEN

PROJECT, whose volunteers now cook and deliver more than 2,500 meals per month to

St. Louis neighbors in need.

SLU inaugurates its first permanent lay president, FRED P. PESTELLO, PH.D.

FIVE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE ADMITTED TO SLU. While SLU’s early

history tragically includes slavery, SLU now becomes the first historically white university in

a former slave state to formally integrate.

SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY WILL CELEBRATE ITS BICENTENNIAL,

marking two centuries of educational excellence, purposeful innovation and

faithful service.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Committed to diversity, SLU is an inclusive community that welcomes all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, faith, sexual orientation, gender, class or ideology.

The University is actively working to enhance diversity on campus and engagement with the external community through a variety of initiatives, led by SLU’s vice president for diversity and community engagement, Jonathan Smith, Ph.D.

These actions include ongoing, campus-wide conversations about race and inclusion; formal commitments to improving access and success for minority students; and increased efforts to address systemic poverty and inequity in St. Louis.

The Billiken is a symbol of good luck that was a national craze in the early 1900s. In 1908, art teacher Florence Pretz received a patent for her version of the mythical figure. Later, the Billiken Co. of Chicago adopted

the likeness, giving the Billiken its name. Manufactured as a bank and statuette, the

Billiken reached its peak of popularity in 1911. Its association with SLU can be traced back to around 1910, when local sportswriters thought that SLU football coach John Bender bore a striking

resemblance to the impish creature. One writer drew a cartoon of Bender as a Billiken, posted it in a drugstore window and dubbed the football team “Bender’s Billikens.” The public took up the moniker, and it soon became the official nickname of all SLU teams.
