STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep...and they will heed my voice.” —JOHN 10:14-16

When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for things that you want? Do you ever ask Jesus what He wants you to do? How do you listen for the response? The answer is usually in “quiet whispers.” Take time in silent, daily prayer to hear His answer.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ APRIL 26, 2015

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Wednesday is the feast of one of the most remarkable women in all the Church’s history, St. Catherine of Siena (1347-1380). The 24th

of 25 children of a family who prospered in the business of dyeing cloth, she lived at a time of rulers who could have awesomely stubborn wills and showed great cruelty. One of them, Bernabo Visconti, tyrannized Milan and at one point got himself excommunicated. When the legates of Pope Innocent VI arrived with the document saying so, he forced them to eat it: parchment, seal and silk cord. Bernabo forced his oppressed people to quarter his 5,000 hunting dogs, and, if any of the dogs died under their care, he had their keepers whipped, sometimes to death.

Catherine was very different from him, of course. Even as a child, people were drawn to her. One of her biographers, the Nobel-Prize novelist and Catholic convert Sigrid Undset, said that “her words and her presence banished despondency and

faint-heartedness, and filled their souls with the peace and love of God.” Her father encouraged her when she wanted to help people who were poor, including financing her enterprises of generosity, often the most effective encouragement of all. When a plague struck that claimed a third of Siena’s population, Catherine aided the sick fearlessly and heroically. Her works of charity were not just general or remote. She got involved personally. She took care of a leper named Cecca, who was repulsive, demanding and nasty, as those who are very poor and suffer greatly can sometimes be. She also helped a woman named Andrea, who suffered from cancer to a nauseating extent—and who made up false stories accusing Catherine of being a woman of fallen virtue. Catherine of Siena became famous for her successful effort to get the pope to move back to Rome from a sad time of exile in which, for complicated reasons, the papacy had moved to France. Visiting Gregory XI at Avignon, she told him, respectfully but bluntly:

To the glory of Almighty God I am bound to say that I smelt the stink of the sins which flourish in the papal court while I was still at home in my own town more sharply than those who practiced them, and do practice them every day here.

Two days later, Gregory left Avignon to return to Rome. St. Catherine once said that “To the servant of God, every place is the right place, and every time is the right time.” What splendid advice for all who aspire to be the kind of people Christ called for: those who devote themselves to serving in imitation of his own example.

Msgr. David Hubba

“How long has Jesus been knocking at the door of your heart, waiting to enter?” —St. John Baptist de la Salle

Today—the 52nd Anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations—the Church throughout the world prays for vocations to the priesthood and diaconate and to the Religious Life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic).

On Palm Sunday, Pope Francis spoke directly to the young people of the world about vocations when he said:

“Dear young friends, never be afraid to go out from yourselves and begin the

journey! The Gospel is the message which brings freedom to our lives; it transforms them and makes them all the more beautiful. How wonderful it is to be surprised by God’s call, to embrace his word, and to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, in adoration of the divine mystery and in generous service

to our neighbors! Your life will become richer and more joyful each day!

The Virgin Mary, model of every vocation, did not fear to utter her “fiat” in response to the Lord’s call. She is at our side and she guides us. With the generous courage born of faith, Mary sang of the joy of leaving herself behind and entrusting to God the plans she had for her life. Let us turn to her, so that we may be completely open to what God has planned for each one of us, so that we can grow in the desire to go out with tender concern towards others . May the Virgin Mary protect and intercede for us all.”

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS God our Father, we thank you for calling

men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons,

religious, and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond

generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations

of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
