PASTOR’S LETTER

Dear Parishioners, This Saturday, July 4th, we celebrate Independence Day. The usual celebrations will not be held such as parades, concerts, and fireworks but the meaning remains. We remember the time when we declared our independence from England. In the environment of today, we are in danger of discarding our history and failing to understand and learn from it. But this holiday can bring a deeper meaning to our spiritual lives. First of all, there is no celebration of independence from God. If we were to be independent from God, we would be like a branch separated from the vine. We would die. This is why the Lord tells us that we are nothing and have nothing without Him. He calls us sheep, for a sheep is dependent upon the shepherd for protection and nourishment. If we are to be independent in our spiritual life, it should be from sin. Unfortunately, we see many have wandered away and live lives independent of God. In spiritual life, it is called rebellion and disobedience.

This rebellion is reflected in our society. If we removed ourselves from the moral order, we see chaos and violence. When we do what we feel and what we want, we become a god unto ourselves. Jesus came to set us free from the power of sin and death. When we confess our sins, we are free for the Lord forgives our sin and frees us from our guilt and shame. Having received mercy from God, we are called to extend mercy to others. We see much hatred and anger in our society today. Isn’t it interesting what people complain about and how they judge others are seen in their own actions. True freedom is to live a life of holiness, loving our God, and our neighbor. I will be available for confession this week on Tuesday, July 7, from 12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. and on Saturday, July 11, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. in the chapel or any other time by appointment. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you,

PASTOR’S LETTER (Continued)

3 Powerful Sacramentals to have in your home.

~Philip Kosloski

Everybody knows Holy Water, but have you heard of Blessed Salt? The use of sacramentals is one of the most misunderstood practices in the Catholic Church. Even if they have been part of the Church’s life from the very beginning, they are commonly (and mistakenly) viewed as some sort of superstition. This is largely due to the fact that many Catholics over the centuries have used sacramentals in a superstitious way as they were not taught how to use them properly. Instead of using them with faith, some Catholics used them as magic charms, rather than instruments of grace. This is unfortunate, as sacramentals are meant to enrich the spiritual lives of believers, not hinder them. They have been instituted by the Church to draw us into a deeper relationship with Christ and are focused on sanctifying every part of our lives. Sacramentals are extensions of the seven sacraments and bring the grace of God into everything that we do. One place where sacramentals are especially powerful is in your own home. If used in a spirit of faith, sacramentals can protect us from spiritual harm or inspire us to live a holy life dedicated to God. Here are three such sacramentals that, if used properly, can provide a spiritual boost to the home as well as keep away spiritual enemies lurking in the shadows. 1. HOLY WATER Holy water has a double meaning of reminding us of our baptism as well as a symbol of spiritual cleansing. Holy water is said to have great power over the devil as the devil cannot stand this “clean” water, since he is entirely unclean for all eternity. It is a reminder of the water that flowed out of Christ’s side, which is a symbol of Baptism, and brings to mind the day of the devil’s defeat (that is, Christ’s crucifixion). It is an ancient custom to have what are called “holy water stoups” or “holy water fonts” on the walls of a home. They are elaborate or simple cups that hold holy water, which can then be used to bless oneself throughout the day. It is especially helpful to have them at the doors that lead outside the house as well as in the bedrooms of family members. That way we keep ourselves always fixed on Christ and remind ourselves to remain pure. It also keeps the holy water handy when needed to ward off any influence of the Evil One. 2. BLESSED SALT If possible, it is also good to have a small container of blessed salt in your home. You would have to specifically ask your parish priest to provide that for you and odds are likely that your parish priest would not be familiar with it. This is one sacramental that is often neglected and is not typically used in parishes. However, it is a powerful weapon against evil as can be seen by the following portion of the blessing said by the priest found in the Roman Ritual.

Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE

A teacher asked the children in her Sunday School class, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would I get into heaven?" "NO!" the children all answered. "If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would I get into heaven?" Again, the answer was "NO!" "Well," she continued, "then how can I get to heaven?" In the back of the room, a five-year-old boy shouted out, "You gotta be dead!"

PASTOR’S LETTER (Continued) Almighty and everlasting God, we humbly implore you, in your immeasurable kindness and love, to bless (+) this salt which you created and gave to the use of mankind, so that it may become a source of health for the minds and bodies of all who make use of it. May it rid whatever it touches or sprinkles of all uncleanness, and protect it from every assault of evil spirits. Through Christ our Lord. 3. CRUCIFIX Another very powerful sacramental that is more typically found in our homes is the crucifix. Not only does a crucifix remind us of the great love that God had for us, but it also is a strong deterrent to spiritual enemies. The crucifix is the bane of Satan’s existence and is the sign of everything that he despises. It is beneficial to have a crucifix in every room in your house (or apartment) so that you can frequently meditate on Jesus’ great sacrifice of love as well as have an image to remind you what you need to focus on during times of temptation. Here are two prayers of blessing a crucifix in the Roman Ritual which sum up all the reasons we need them in our homes. Holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, be pleased to bless + this cross, that it may be a saving help to mankind. Let it be the support of faith, an encouragement to good works, the redemption of souls; and let it be consolation, protection, and a shield against the cruel darts of the enemy; through Christ our Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ, bless + this cross by which you snatched the world from Satan’s grasp, and on which you overcame by your suffering the tempter to sin, who rejoiced in the first man’s fall in eating of the forbidden tree. Here it is sprinkled with holy water. May this cross be hallowed in the name of the Father, + and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit; and may all who kneel and pray before this cross in honor of our Lord find health in body and soul; through Christ our Lord. Friday, July 10, 2020 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Join us for a talk on Inner Healing and how it can bring relief to our deepest hurts, emotional pain, traumatic memories, tormenting thoughts, and relationship issues. The night’s focus will be centered on Mother and Father wounds with a special Mother and Father Blessing. There will be time at the end for quiet soaking prayer. Soaking prayer is coming into the presence of the Lord in a posture of receiving allowing him to minister to you directly in body, mind, soul, and spirit. Gentle worship music will be playing in the background. Trained prayer ministers will also be available to pray with you as well in a socially distanced area. Please RSVP for this event as we are limited to 40 % capacity. Ushers will greet you and show you to your socially distanced seat. Masks must be worn inside the church.

FAITH FORMATION

PRAYER Intentions

Your prayers are requested for the deceased of our community and all of our parish benefactors, our sick, our military, especially our parishioners who are currently deployed to an active combat area and all those who have asked us to pray for them this week. Their names have been inscribed in our parish Book of Intentions in the Chapel. Please contact the rectory to add a name.

Reflection of the Week

Look for the good in every person and every situation.

You will almost always find it.

Following Our Convictions

Most of us have been blessed to live relatively free from persecution. We may have experienced some mocking, ridicule, or ostracism because of our beliefs, but we don’t have to fear punishment or death. However, that’s not the case elsewhere in the world. There are Christians in other countries who are persecuted for their faith. Acts 4 tells us that Peter and John faced great opposition for their faith. After being thrown into jail for healing a sick man, they were warned not to speak or teach in Jesus Christ’s name. But they held firmly to their convictions and replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him? We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19-20 NLT). Our goal as believers is to become unshakeable in our faith. Peter and John didn’t flinch from their responsibility to proclaim salvation in Jesus’ name, even in the face of imprisonment and threats. Yet in reading this account, we may wonder how we could ever endure persecution. The truth is that in ourselves, we can’t do it. But we are never alone. When we stand for our convictions, God’s Spirit is always present in us. He gives us the physical, spiritual, mental, and moral strength to stand firm when we are tested and tried (Luke 12:11-12). God wants His children to trust Him with the future; He doesn’t want us becoming panicky about what may lie ahead. But if He ever calls us to suffer for Him, in that moment He’ll provide the grace we need in order to remain faithful.
