STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” MATT 3:10 Do you bear good fruit for Christ? Or, do you spend your time, talent and treasure constantly acquiring more toys, clutter and junk. Our time, our talent and our treasure are gifts that God has given us. What we do with them is our gift back to God. What gifts are you planning to give to the Lord during this upcoming Christmas season?

HELP US DECORATE FOR CHRISTMAS!

Volunteers are needed to help us decorate Saint Joseph Church for the celebration of Our Lord’s birth. Helpers are needed on Sunday, December 18 at 2:00 pm to prepare the sanctuaries in both the Upper Church and Mary’s Chapel and to set up our Nativity scenes and other decorations. Volunteers are also welcome on Friday, December 23 at 9:15 am to arrange our Christmas flowers, set up the altar in the school gym for our third Christmas Eve Mass, and to put the final touches to everything. Please call or email Tom Moran at 201-220-9278 or at [email protected] to let us know you will be able to come to one or both of our decorating days. Your help is greatly needed and much appreciated.

DECEMBER 8—A Holy Day of Obligation

Even with the enormous growth of online buying, the pre-Christmas shopping scene in Bergen County still calls for savvy driving

strategies if you want to get to places with best efficiency. For instance, it makes a deal of sense to avoid Route 17 at certain times, especially if you wish to reach your destination on the very same day you set out. In Dr. Seuss’s classic children’s book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the famous chief character is thinking over the implications of the season:

And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! “Maybe Christmas,” he thought, doesn’t come from a store. “Maybe Christmas … perhaps … means a little bit more.” We all know that Christmas is inexpugnably about Jesus Christ. Nothing can erase that or distance us from it if we value our life of faith. But because our beliefs do not exclude other human joys, we like to do things such as show our affection for family and friends by exchanging gifts with them at Christmas time. This is something that is very possible for us to achieve while, at the same time, we observe the best balances of our religion. The world of retail doesn’t have to be a threat to our Catholic ways just because it can sometimes entice us into excesses. Teresa Jordan, in her recent book The Year of Living Virtuously (Weekends Off): One Woman’s Search for Meaning in an Ordinary Life, tells the story of Sam Stone (originally Finkelstein), a Jewish immigrant from Romania who became the owner of a successful clothing store in Canton, Ohio. In 1933, in the middle of the Great Depression, he took out an ad in the local newspaper, writing as “B. Virdot,” a fictional name derived from the names of his daughters. In it, he offered Christmas gifts of $5 (the equivalent of $100 in today’s dollars) to those who would write to him stating why they needed money. Sam, in a beautiful example of Christmas generosity, gave out 150 of these gifts. Thanks to all of you who are participating in our parish’s Christmas Giving Tree project under the direction of Kristin Racine. You can leave the requested gifts at church until the end of the Sunday Masses of December 11, or drop them off at the parish office as late as Monday, December 12. (See p. 4.) Your generosity will make this Christmas brighter for people in need.

COLLECTION FOR RETIRED RELIGIOUS

—THIS WEEKEND

Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others—educating the young,

comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously by using your parish envelope, donating through our online giving program ParishPay, or by writing a check (to “Saint Joseph Church”) and writing “Retired Religious” in the memo. Thank you!

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS You are invited to make a donation—in memory of a loved one or for a special intention—toward the cost of decorating our worship spaces for the Christmas season.

Please use the “Flower Envelope” that you will receive in the mail. (Extra envelopes are available in the parish office.) Please PRINT clearly on the envelope your intention, your name and phone number. Donation is $10 per name/family and payable to “Saint Joseph Church.” Your envelope can be put in the collection basket.

JOINT ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE —DECEMBER 12

This year’s Advent Penance Service for both Saint Joseph and St. Peter the Apostle Parishes will be held at St. Peter’s Church, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge, NJ on Monday, December 12 at 7:30 pm. The clergy of both Saint Joseph Parish and St. Peter’s Parishes will be available to hear confessions.

“THE THREATS TO FREEDOM OF RELIGION IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY”—DECEMBER 6 "Religious freedom is not only that of private thought or worship. It is the liberty to live, both privately and publicly, according to the ethical principles resulting from found truth.” (Pope Francis I - June 20, 2014)

As individuals, we should all be concerned that our culture has lost respect for religious perspectives and has sought to prevent religiously motivated people from expressing their moral values in public discourse and action. Unfortunately, most people are unaware that there continue to be attempts by government and public institutions to coerce individuals and religious institutions to act in violation of their consciences. If Religious Liberty is important to you, and more importantly to your children and grandchildren, and if you wish to explore this issue, you are cordially invited to attend a presentation on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:30 pm in Mary’s Chapel.

IN OUR HEARTS

Shown above: Baby Oliver Kamal with big brother Timothy (age 3), mom Kristen and dad Shafayat.

“Ollie has a congenital heart defect (CHD) known as aortic stenosis which put him on the spectrum for hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS),” Kristen told us. “This is when the left ventricle of the heart is underdeveloped and can't pump blood to the body. We are very fortunate that after Ollie's first surgery his left ventricle healed and it's function is almost completely normal. So instead of having only half of a functioning heart, Oliver now has the chance to have two working ventricles when we go back to Boston in December to have a Biventricular Repair. He will need future surgeries and procedures for his heart—his heart will never be normal—and there is no cure. But we pray for and work to give him the best chance possible for a long and healthy life.” Please keep Ollie and his family in your prayers.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 4, 2016

TAKE A TAG SHARE THE BLESSINGS

OF CHRISTMAS What better way to prepare our

homes and hearts for Christmas than to share the blessings and joys of that holy season with those in need. Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, is located in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Monday, December 12.

A SPECIAL INVITATION TO OUR CORNERSTONE

SISTERS AND BROTHERS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY

—DECEMBER 5

We are extending a Merry Christmas Invitation to all our Cornerstone sisters and brothers. We are having our annual Christmas Party on Monday night, December 5, and we would love for you to join us. You may bring your spouse or significant other to the party even if they haven't made Cornerstone. They might like us and decide to join us in March! Please bring a favorite Christmas goodie for our sharing table, and also a gift to put on the tree. Again this year, we invite you to make a money ornament that will be given to a needy family. Just tie a ribbon around your contribution and make a loop so it will hang on the tree, and hang it when you come in. If you are creative, you can do your money ornament however you would like. If you cannot contribute, we understand. You are still welcome to join us for an evening of fun, food, games and fellowship as we welcome our Savior's birth.

Date - December 5 Place - K of C Hall

199 River Road, New Milford Time - Doors will open at 7:00 pm

We hope you can join us for this wonderful celebration!

ADVENT REFLECTIONS – “TIDINGS OF GREAT JOY” LEGION OF MARY THIRD SATURDAY LITURGY—DECEMBER 17

Richard Fritzky author of A Pilgrim’s Song: Mary Varick and Her Theology of Suffering, What Must Needs Come: A Legacy of Gettysburg and Tidings of Great Joy: Keeping Christmas Well will speak in Saint Joseph’s Upper Church on Saturday, December 17 after the 8:30 AM Mass at the Legion of Mary Third Saturday Liturgy Gathering. All are most

welcome! Focusing upon the topics of “Carrying the Cross” and “Keeping Christmas Well,” he will suggest that affliction and suffering can be the ultimate instruments of joy, transformative grace, and redemption—and that truly living in the spirit of Christmas requires journeying deep within and giving of oneself without. If you are challenged and struggling with suffering of any kind – be it mental, emotional or physical – or if you are simply interested in going deeper this Advent, please consider coming. You will not be disappointed.

THANK YOU BROWNIE GIRL SCOUTS OF TROOP 6669! Saint Joseph Parish and Social Concerns Committee

are grateful to the Brownies for their help with our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

HELPING THOSE IN DESPERATE NEED Saint Joseph parishioner Sophia Mustard will be going on a Mission Trip to Rivere Friode, a small town in Haiti, from January 5-14. She will be traveling with the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Renewal and the lay support group “Friar Suppliers.” The group will be working to build 45 houses and latrines (destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October). Many people there have only a tent to live in. The group’s medical team will treat as many as 2,000 people, giving medicine for high blood pressure (a big problem there), treating wounds and handing out vitamins to a community that is without even the barest necessities. Food is never in abundance and many people there only eat every three days! The group is hoping to be able to feed 1,500 families. Sophia is asking for our financial help. The cost to build a house is $600; a latrine costs $350. A 50 lb. bag of rice is $40; a bag of kidney beans of the same size is $75. Corn is relatively inexpensive ($25 for a 50 lb. bag), but grinders are needed. The group hopes to provide both manual grinders ($300 each) and electric grinders (at $1,500 each) to make cornmeal so that the children in their school can have breakfast . If you can help, please write your check, for whatever amount you can afford, to “Friar Suppliers,” put it in an envelope marked “Mission Trip” and drop it in the collection basket or at the rectory/parish office. Friar Suppliers is a 501c3 organization. 100% of your donation will go to help the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. If you’d like to see what was done on the Mission Trip in 2016 go to friarsuppliers.com Thank you for your generosity.
