Catholics were a small percentage of America’s population when our nation first declared its independence from England on July 4, 1776. The

only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence was a distinguished citizen of Maryland, who did so on August 2 and had perhaps the most to lose by signing, since he was one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. He signed his name as “Charles Carroll of Carrollton,” as he explained, “so that King George would know which Carroll to hunt down for treason.” Charles Carroll (1737-1834) was the descendant of a Catholic family that went back to Maryland’s earliest days as a colony. By the time he was a schoolboy, Maryland was no longer a land where any religion could be freely practiced, and Catholics faced strong legal discrimination against them. Charles and his cousin John, who would become America’s first Catholic bishop, were first educated in a Jesuit school that had to operate in secret. Both were then sent to France for further studies, Charles’ s training being in law, which he practiced in London and in Paris before returning to Maryland in 1765. When he got back, his father kindly gave him Carrollton Manor, a ten-thousand-acre estate in Frederick County, which Charles was of no mind to refuse. He then married his wife Mary, with whom he had seven children. Entering the political life of the time, Charles became an ardent opponent of what he saw as the gravely unfair taxation system England was then imposing. He also defended his Church in newspaper debates with a prom-inent denouncer of the Catholic Faith. He and his cousin John served the revolutionary cause by taking part, together with Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Chase, in a delegation that tried to get Canada to support the cause of American independence, a worthy effort that failed. After the revolution succeeded, Carroll became a state senator in Maryland and a U.S. senator. He also became an advocate for ending slavery in his home state, although that cause did not succeed at the time. After Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day in 1826, fittingly enough on July 4, Charles Carroll became the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence. Not long before he died on November 14, 1832, Carroll wrote that

I have come almost to the threshold of ninety-six years; I have always enjoyed the best of health. I have been blessed with great riches, prosperity, public esteem, and more of the good things than the world usually concedes; but in looking back, the one thing that gives me the greatest satisfaction is that I practiced the duties of my religion. Msgr. David Hubba

FOOD DRIVE THANK YOU! ‘Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink… . Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it to me’.

Matthew 25:34,35,40

Thank you! At this time of the year, when food pantries are low in supplies, your donations were a true blessing to those in need of the food pantries at Ascension Church in New Milford and St, John’s in Bergenfield. In addition your monetary donations will help feed those in need at the Housing, Health and Human Services Shelter in Hackensack. We know God will bless you. "… give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap… ."

Luke 6:38

ACCOUNTABILITY WITH HEARTFELT THANKS

Catholic Charities received $1,006 as a result of your clothing donations from December 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016. These funds combined with monies from other parishes in a similar program throughout the Archdio-cese alleviated the sufferings of the needy who sought relief through the many operations of Catholic Charities. In light of this, we are pleased to report that during the same period of December to May, we distributed 81,286 pounds of food to 12,801 families in the Archdiocese. Thank you for being our partner and enabling us to bring Christ’s love to the most vulnerable in our society.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

The members of Saint Joseph’s Adult Choir gathered in our Parish Life Center to celebrate a wonderful year and to sing the praises of their director, Monroe Quinn (not shown—he’s our photographer!) Under Monroe’s guidance, the Choir beautifully enhanced our Sunday liturgies, enriched our Christmas, Triduum and Easter Masses, and dazzled us with their talent at the annual Christmas Concert. (They already have something special planned for next year!) If you’d like to join this terrific group, contact Monroe at [email protected]

SJS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Congratulations to Saint Joseph School 8th grade graduates Ciara Wacker and Nicholas Carrier who were chosen by the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council #3814 as the 2016 K of C Scholarship winners. Grand Knight John Klochan (right) presented both students with a check for $1,000. Their selection was based on their service to church, school and community and their essays on the Knights’ principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Ciara will be attending the Academy of the Holy Angels (AHA) in the fall; Nicholas will be going to Bergen Catholic High School. We extend our best wishes to both!

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 3, 2016

KEEP YOUR CAR RADIO TUNED TO 1430 AM!

Relevant Radio, one of the preeminent Catholic radio networks in the country, has now established a presence here in the Greater New York area—and

especially right here in the Archdiocese of Newark. We are now blessed that Catholic talk radio is available to assist us here in New Jersey in our efforts to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. WNSW—1430 AM is Relevant Radio’s most recent station and is located in the Archdiocese of Newark Chancery offices on Clifton Avenue. We encourage you to tune into WNSW 1430 AM!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU Dear Saint Joseph Parishioners, I salute you for your most generous contributions to the CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS' CROSS OF PEACE CAMPAIGN on June 25 & 26.. Your contributions totaled an amazing $2,144.00. Saint Joseph's generosity will help our Veterans, especially those very special men and women living at the Paramus Veterans Memorial Home. It takes the LOVE of one Brother looking after his many Brothers and Sisters, who have served this country, and YOU, Saint Joseph Parish, have demonstrated that LOVE by your generous contribution and prayers. Peace be with you, Kurt Strobach, Commander Jeff Harm, Cross of Peace Captain

O GOD OUR CREATOR, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome— for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us— this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
