PARISH AND COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

SECOND COLLECTIONS FOR 2016 A portion of the Sunday Offertory in proportion to the average of the ‘special collection’ over the last four years, will be forwarded to the Diocese in support of Special Collections. This will eliminate 12 of the 16 second collections. The only four “Second Collections” to be actual passing of the basket for a second time in church will be; Holy Land Collection on Good Friday (March 25, 2016); Retired Diocesan Priests Fund (April 17, 2016); Peter Pence Collection (June 26, 2016); and the Annual Retirement Fund for Religious (December 11, 2016)

PAPAL BLESSING Papal Blessings are a privilege. St. Joseph Church wishes to give this quite beautiful document certifying that the Holy Father has bestowed his apostolic blessing as a gift for couples who have been married 50 years or more in the Church. If you are interested or would like more information call 358-3239 and ask for Ruth.

YARD CROSSES With the ACLU and others trying to remove from our history and current lives any reference to God, prayer or the fact that our country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles it is time to stand up and make a statement. One way is to place a

white cross in your front yard or garden for all to see. It would be a beautiful thing to see crosses all across America. If you are interested in this you may purchase a cross from the Knights of Columbus for $10.00. Crosses are available and may be purchased from Paul Matula at 362-1943 or John Padilla at 542-4091 or at the parish office.

WOMEN OF THE

BIBLE Fr. Paul Kottackal [email protected]

Miriam the Older Sister of Moses Miriam the older sister of Moses first appears in the book of

Exodus immediately after Pharaoh’s decree that all newborn Hebrew boys must be killed. Her mother, Jochebed, had been hiding her new born (later Moses). Having realized it was not safe to hide the newborn any more she put Moses in a waterproof basket and placed him in the river Nile. Miriam followed the basket at a distance. Pharaoh’s daughter noticed the baby floating, and saved it. Miriam appeared at this point as if she knew nothing about it, and suggested, a Hebrew woman would be appointed to nurse the child; Yochebed was chosen. (Exodus 2:9). As a result of Miriam's courage and creativity Moses was raised by his own mother. Later after having been adopted he was raised in the Egyptian royal family.

Next Miriam is seen when Moses led the Israelites in a song of praise to God in the wilderness. Miriam led the women. “Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tumbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her with tumbrels and dancing.” (Exodus 15:20) As a prophetess God had spoken to Miriam. (Numbers 12:2) According to a Jewish tradition, a well of water followed her in the journey, and it quenched people's thirst. The origin of ‘Miriam’s cup’ at the Seder meal is traced to this.

Once, Miriam and Aaron spoke ill of Cushite the Ethiopian wife of Moses. (Numbers 12:10-14) Having overheard it God appeared as a cloud to the siblings. God explained to Miriam and Aaron that Moses was different from other prophets: "When there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, reveal myself to them in visions. But this is not true of my servant Moses … With him I speak face to face…….. Why then did you not fear to speak against my servant Moses?" (Numbers 12:6-9). Following this encounter Miriam discovered that she was afflicted with leprosy. Surprisingly, Aaron was not punished because it was Miriam who initiated the gossip.

Having felt compassion Aaron requested Moses to intercede with God on behalf of Miriam. (Numbers 12:13) Moses cried out, “O Lord, please heal her." God eventually healed Miriam, but insisted, she had to be exiled from the camp for seven days. She was shut out. She returned healed after the stipulated period. And they continued their journey in the desert. There after nothing is reported about her except: “In the first month the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.” (Number 20: 1)

SHE IS FUNNY! We were visiting our uncle’s house. He had a pig farm. Aunt

came out to greet us. After the hugs and kisses, Dad asked about my uncle. “He is in the barn with the pigs.” She said, “Don’t worry; you won’t have any trouble finding him. He’s the only one with a hat on!”

LENTEN OBSERVANCE AND REGULATIONS FOR CATHOLICS Ash Wednesday, February 10th marked the beginning of Lent. The following fasting and abstinence regulations are observed:

Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older. Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59 years of age. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.

The special Paschal fast and abstinence are observed on Good Friday and, where possible, on Holy Saturday. On these days, Christians prepare themselves by these disciplines in anticipation of the renewal of their baptismal commitment on Easter. For more information regarding Lent please see the St. Joseph Church website.

DAYS OF REFLECTION ON THE PRIESTHOOD All young men are invited and encouraged to attend a Lenten Day of Reflection. Every Catholic man should at least consider priesthood as an option. Hopefully someone at some point in your life has asked you in these similar words, “Is Jesus calling you to be a priest?” It’s not an easy question to answer. It takes prayer and study to discover your TRUE vocation. This Lenten Day of Reflection is for all high school young men and above who love Jesus Christ and His Church. ♦ Saturday, April 23rd, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., St. Joseph, 609 East Gramman Street, Beeville Additional days and locations across the diocese are being planned. Please call the Vocation Office at (361) 334-2781 for further details.
