Tim Francis Eucharistic Miracles Movie Showing and follow up sessions: Due to the overwhelmingly positive response of the presentations, we will be hosting a series of follow-up sessions. So if you missed the Tim Francis Eucharistic Miracles Presentations or if you attended them and want to learn more, you are invited to be a part of a 7 week follow up group at St. Joseph, Westpha-lia. (There is NO formal commitment to participate each week.) The movie is basically everything Tim talked about and showed during his presentations. Discussion and review sessions will continue for 7 consecutive Mondays after the movie screen-ing. During these 90 minute sessions we will be discussing the book Reason to Believe and listening to and discussing one of five hand-chosen Lighthouse Catholic Media CD's.

The purpose of the follow up is to: 1) Learn more about the "message" behind the "miracles" discussed in the presentation and grow closer to Our Lord, Our Lady and Our Church; 2) Giving the group tools/resources to reach other Catholics and non-Catholics; 3) Getting the kids back in church, especially the fallen away kids and grandkids of your parish.

When, Where, What time? - Group Follow Up. The follow up sessions will begin on the following 7 consecutive Mondays from 6:30-8:00 p.m. starting on September 23 to November 4. Meeting locations are to be announced.

Please sign up one of these three ways: Stop by St. Joseph or St. Anthony's Church and fill out the information on the sign-up sheet located in the vestibules (or table outside), by filling out the online RSVP at Stjosephwestphalia.org/special events, or by calling 573-694-6319.

Local Discussion for Diocesan Women’s Ministry book club: Book: Girl, Arise by Claire Swinarski Dates: Tuesdays, October 8, 15, 29 Time: 6:30-8 p.m. Location: Westphalia Knights of Columbus Hall

LeAnn Korsmeyer, our Diocesan director of women’s ministry, is presenting a way for women to connect to one another and to Christ. Through her role as the Women’s Ministry coordinator, she is offering a book club for all women in our dio-cese! The first book in our club will be Girl, Arise, written by Claire Swinarski. This book can be purchased on Amazon or Ava Maria Press.

In “Girl, Arise,” Swinarski reconciles the two identities, “Catholic” and “Feminist,” by demonstrating the strength and abil-ities women have to share with the Body of Christ, the importance of women throughout the history of the faith, and how the love you experience through Christ and the Church can change you and the world around you. ~ Claire Swinarski

Follow our Women’s Ministry Facebook page or check out our Women’s Ministry Page on the diocesan website to find discussion questions!

Meet with area women for group book discussions on Tuesdays, October 8, 15, and 29 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Westpha-lia Knights of Columbus Hall. Read in advance from Girl, Arise by Claire Swinarski, so we can discuss on October 8: Chapters 1, 2 and 3; October 15: Chapters 4, 5 and 6; October 29: Chapters 7, 8 and 9. For questions about the local gath-ering, contact Nancy Massman at (573) 418-8295.

The Priest’s Chair in Church

One of the elements of the church furnishings that we will address at St. Joseph’s is the position of

the priest’s chair. Together, with the altar and ambo, the celebrant’s chair is considered one of the three pri-mary liturgical furnishings in the sanctuary of every Catholic church. The ambo, from where the readings and Gospel are proclaimed, signifies the dignity of God’s Word. The altar, stands as an image of Christ and the priestly office of sacrifice which the priest shares with

Christ. The altar is a foretaste of the Heavenly Banquet. The chair, signifies the priest’s headship during the sacred liturgy. The chair reveals and proclaims the priest’s critical sacramental role for the gathering of the faithful to glorify the Father. A church only has

one celebrant’s chair since each Mass has only one principal celebrant, namely the pastor. In individual par-ishes, the General Instruction gives a preference to placement of the priest-celebrant’s chair “facing the peo-

ple at the head of the sanctuary”. The General Instruction quickly gives alternative possibilities in case the chair is too far from the altar or “if the tabernacle is positioned in the center behind the altar.” The General Instruction clearly states that “any appearance of a throne (chair raised up) is to be avoided. This prerogative

would be reserved for the bishop. In short, the priest is the sacramental leader of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Yet, the priest is not to be the focal point of the Mass. Although he stands in persona Christi, in the person of Christ, the priest gives

way to the tabernacle, the altar of sacrifice and the crucifix of the church. Hence, as the above states, since the priest chair is directly in front of the tabernacle and it is raised up on a platform, we will return the priest

chair to the side of the sanctuary. You can see this positioning of the chair in earlier photos of St. Joseph’s church. Blessings… Fr. Viviano

Precepts of the Catholic Church…(fundamental/minimum principles for Catholics)

1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor.

We must “sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord” (Sunday), as well as the principal feast days, known as Catholic holy days of obligation. This requires attending Mass, “and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days.”

2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year.

We must prepare for the Eucharist by means of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). This sacrament “continues Baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.”

3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season.

This “guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy.”

4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. “The fourth precept ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.” See below for more about fasting & abstinence.

5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.

“The fifth precept means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.”

(These quotations are from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in its section about the Precepts of the Catho-lic Church (#2041-3).) Note that these precepts of the Catholic Church are required, unless you have a legitimate reason for not meet-ing them. For example:

If you are sick, tending to a sick child, or camping in the wilderness on Sunday and cannot get to Mass, it is not a grave violation to miss Mass that day. Children, the elderly, and pregnant or nursing women do not have to fast on normal fast days (Ash Wednes-

day and Good Friday). ________________________________________

Ask a priest: If you have any questions about the Mass, about the Catholic Faith, about the precepts of the Church, etc., that you would like answered, you can email Father at [email protected], drop a note in the collection basket in an envelope addressed to Father, or send a note by regular mail to Post Office Box 116, Westphalia, MO 65085.

Cash received toward renovation: $1,821,354 Amount still owed toward pledges: $ 409,469

Campaign Total To-Date: $2,230,823

The renovation is budgeted at $2.2 million. Additional funds are likely needed to complete the renovation. There have been some unexpected issues come up as repairs have been conducted. These include tuck-pointing of the boiler flu, collapsed ground drains, stone-cap mortar upgrades on the two stairwell roofs, rotten wood under the steeple, roofs, and clerestory walls, etc. Given the scale of work yet to be completed, we are budgeting for overages. As such, it’s important to continue collecting on pledges owed toward the renovation.

Church Renovation Update: 9/19/2019

Exterior work is complete. The clerestory stained glass windows (upper windows) will soon be removed and sent to Wisconsin for repairs. They should be reinstalled around January 2020. The interior scaffolding is scheduled to be erected September 30. The scaffolding will be situated above the pews and allow for Mass to continue. Interior wall repairs and painting is scheduled to begin October 1 and be completed around February 2020 . Mid America Metals has been selected to repair and refinish the terrazzo floor. This work will take place after the old pews have been removed (https://www.midamericametals.com/). The carpet in the sanctuary will be replaced with porcelain tile. We are still researching flooring options for the balcony and steps. New Holland Church Furniture has been selected to build and install new pews. There has been extensive re-search conducted to ensure the new pews are comfortable. The pews will be made from solid red oak, though the exact stain color is yet to be determined (http://www.newhollandwood.com/). Father recently met with Freedom Hardwood Products to discuss options/styles/etc., for vestibule doors, re-stroom doors, balcony railings, a new confessional, and communion rails. No decisions have been made on these items.
