Saint Joseph Basilica May 17th, 2020 3

A young musician told the reporter that the best compliment he ever received came in a magazine review of his work in which he was compared to his father, a famous musician and composer. After a favorable comparison, the writer referred to him as a chip off the old block. The young man felt he had indeed inherited his father’s ge-nius for music. In giving some final instructions, Jesus describes the unity between the Father and Him, and between the Father and the Holy Spirit. That unity is shared with all those who believe in Jesus, because Jesus dwells within them and they in Jesus. Nothing can separate us from the Lord because we share the same life, the same love and the same Spirit. Our unity is more than a superficial likeness; we truly are soul mates of the Lord. Faith is not something we do as much as it is something that we are. Baptism does not simply make us members of a group called Church. It makes us church, shaping us as a new creation and a child of God. Made in God’s

image and likeness, we have inherited His genius for life, grace, truth and peace. We are given the same mission as Jesus to build the Kingdom, to proclaim God’s love and to share His blessings and His glory. We are given the promise of eternal life with God in Heav-en. We are more than chips off the old block. We are heirs of God.

Saint Vincent de Paul: In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments… Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and reveal myself to him. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and through us into the hearts of those who are poor. To make a donation to St. Vincent de Paul, send it c/o Sacred Heart Parish 18 East Main St. Webster, MA 01570

Stewardship Note: The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning and making sure things are progressing smooth-ly. Then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intend-ed or an unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may re-spond negatively and ask, “Why me? I did everything right!” Here’s the thing – adversity humbles us and reminds us of our dependence on God and not on our own self-reliance. Rest assured, God has a better plan in store for you.

Bishop McManus has suspended Mass in the Diocese of Worcester until further notice. To help support the parish, you may mail your envelopes to the rectory, drop them off, or give online. This information can be found on the parish website.

There is no second collection next weekend.

PARTNERS IN CHARITY Thanks to all our parishioners who have made their gift to the 2020 Partners in Charity Appeal. To date 145 par ish families have responded for a total of $25,185 which is 80% of our goal of

$31,300. If you have not yet made a gift or pledge, please fill out a commitment pledge envelope located in your envelope packet or in the pews of the church. You may also visit www.partners-charity.net to do it on line. Part-ners in Charity is the Annual Appeal for the Diocese of Worcester serving 25 charitable,

educational, and pastoral ministries. Through your generous sup-port we are able to serve thousands of families and individuals in Worcester County through outreach, formation, evangelization, and worship. Thank you

Spiritual Communion Since you are not able to attend Mass physically, you may wa-tch it on TV and receive spiritual communion. Begin by exami-ning your conscience and making a good Act of Contrition. Then pray one of the prayers recommended by the Saints for inviting Christ into your heart. Here is one by Saint Alphonsus Liguori: My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

A PRAYER IN TIME OF PANDEMIC O God, whose Only Begotten Son bore the weight of human suffering for our salvation, hear the prayers of your Church for our sick brothers and sisters and deliver us from this time of trial.

Open our ears and our hearts to the voice of your Son: Be not afraid, for I am with you always.

Bless all doctors and nurses, researchers and public servants; give us the wisdom to do what is right and the faith to endure this hour, that we might gather once again to praise your name in the heart of your Church, delivered from all distress and confident in your mercy.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

MAY DEVOTIONS May devotions are held daily at 7pm at St. Joseph Basilica, streamed live which consists of singing the litany to the Blessed Mother (English: Wed/Thurs.; Polish: Mon/Tues/Fri.)

Every parishioner should take advantage of these special Eucharistic Days and participa-te in the scheduled devotions. The devotions will be streamed - live.

POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II Pope Francis will celebrate a Mass for the 100th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s birth. It will be in the Vatican on May 17th. Karol Wojtyla was actually born on May 18th. In Poland, the anniversary will be celebrated everywhere. Pope John Paul II played an important role in the life of Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis). He named him bishop in 1992 and cardinal in 2001. Little did he know that years later, the Argentine cardinal would become pope and preside at the canonization of Pope John Paul II on April 27, 2014. Since we cannot have a public celebration, please remember Pope Saint John Paul II in your prayers.

CEMETERY The winter months with snow, rain, and thawing temperatures makes work in our cemetery difficult. We are aware that heavy equipment during burial times has caused harm to some grave sites. Loam has recently been delivered to us and in the next few weeks our cemetery manager will be repairing and rectifying any damage that we observe. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding as we continue to correct the winter damages. Water is now available at the cemetery. When putting in plants or decorations, please keep them to a maximum of one foot from the monument.

If you are aware of an incident of sexual misconduct and the suspected offender is a priest, deacon, candidate, seminarian, religious, lay minister, employee or volunteer, you are encouraged to report the matter to the Diocese of Worcester. The report can be made by phone, contact Judith Audette, Director of the Office for Healing and Prevention, (508) 929-4363 or in writing, and sent to Office for Healing and Prevention, 49 Elm Street, Worcester, MA 01609.

Saint Joseph Basilica May 17th, 2020 5

Although the Basilica remains closed due to the COVID-19 pan-demic, devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary still occur every week-night during the month of May. The devotions are a longstanding tradition honoring the Virgin Mary as “the Queen of Heaven and Earth.” It is also a tradition that the president of the Children of Mary Sodality at St. Joseph School has the honor of crowning the statue of the Blessed Mother, and fortunately that tradition continued despite the current health crisis. The Children of Mary Sodality dates back to the earliest founda-

tional years of St. Joseph Parish. As an organization of young girls, it was and still is an integral part of the St. Joseph School community. Children of Mary Sodality members strive to honor Mary, the Mother of God, not only during May devo-tions, but in their daily lives by imitating her many vir-tues. The sodality is advised by Sr. Mary Ann Papiez and membership is open to girls in Grades 3-8 who attend St. Jo-seph School or St. Joseph Religious Education classes. New members are accepted into the Sodality on the first Sunday of Advent during a par-

ish family Mass. On Monday, May 4th, following the blessing of the floral crown by Fr. Gregory, 8th Grade stu-dent, Wiktoria Potem, had the privilege of crowning the Virgin Mary. It was a beautiful moment that reflected the mystery it evokes: The Fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary – The Coronation

of Mary. Although the pews in the Basilica were empty, pa-rishioners and students had the opportunity to view the crowning. All Masses and devotions are currently Live Streamed to the public on the school’s Facebook page @stjosephwebster. In addition to the May Crowning ceremony, members of the Sodality actively participate in various parish activities including processions for important feast days and the Fatima processions on the 13th of the month from May to Octo-ber. During the processions, they have the privilege of car-rying the statue of Our Lady. The girls also participate in First Friday adoration where they recite the rosary before the Blessed Sacrament. During Midnight Mass at Christ-mas, the sodality president has the privilege of carrying the statue of the Infant Jesus and placing Him in the manger. To learn more about the Children of Mary Sodality or how your son or daughter can

become part of a vibrant school community, please call 508-943-0378, email [email protected], or visit the St. Joseph School website: www.sjs-webster.com.

Widzieć Jezusa w Jego obecności w Kościele w Sakramentach - „Ale wy mnie widzicie, ponieważ ja żyję i wy żyć będziecie”. Gdy więc żyję sakramentalnie, staje się możliwe to, co niemożliwe, a więc życie Jego przykazaniami, życie Jego nauką.

MSZA WOTYWNA I NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA

Powracamy do cotygodniowej tradycji Mszy św. Wotywnych i Nowenny do św.

Dzisiaj rozpoczynamy obchody Nabożeństwa Czter-dziestogodzinnego w naszej parafii. Zapraszamy do wspólnej modlitwy.
