Dear Parishioners,

Cardinal Joseph Tobin has granted the request of Richard Garibell, President of Hudson Catholic High School, and has

appointed me as the new director of evangelization, the new chaplain, and the new instructor of the shared educational program between St. Peter’s University and Hudson Catholic. As I begin on July 1st this new way of expanding the reign of God by empowering through excellence-in-education today’s young people, I entrust my new mission to your generous prayers. I thank Msgr. Hubba, Fr. Regaspi, the excellent parish and school staff, the excellent church volunteers and ministers for sharing their gifts, love and dedication to the Lord with me during my time at Saint Joseph. Above all, thanks to you, beloved parishioners. Because of the many sacrifices you make out of love for your families, you have become the great people I respect, love and remember in my heart. To you and your families all my best wishes, blessings and prayers.

Till our paths cross again, Fr. Joseph Montes de Oca

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

SUMMER SUNDAY MASS SCHEDULE Starting Sunday, June 24, there will be NO 10:30 am Mass in Mary’s Chapel during the summer months.

PBS recently aired the first episode in The Great American Read, an eight-part series exploring the top 100 best-loved novels as chosen in a national survey. It was designed to “… get the country reading and passionately talking about books.” Taking a cue from PBS, here are some Christian- themed recordings to consider for a “Great American Listen.” (All recordings are available on Amazon.)

Sacred Songs – Plácido Domingo (2002 - Deutsche Grammophon) In the liner notes to this CD, tenor Pla cido Domingo states “In a sense, all music is sacred, because it seems to come to us from a divine source.” The tracks included span 300 years and

composers of varying background. There are three musical settings of “Ave Maria” (the most common by Schubert is not included in this outing), “Panis Angelicus” by Franck and the beautiful “Domine Deus” by Rossini. Contemporary songs are also represented such as Richard Rodgers’ “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Kyrie” by Italian composer Paolo Rustichelli.

Take 6 – Take 6 (1988 - Reprise) The self-titled debut album by gospel group Take 6 earned them two of their ten Grammy Awards. Their astonishing a cappella singing and inventive arrangements helped popularize the genre that would later

produce such mainstream entities as Glee and Pentatonix. Songs like “Spread Love” and “Gold Mine” feature original melodies and lyrics. Others are modern interpretations of Bible stories and/or public domain melodies such as “Mary” and the humorous setting of

(continued above)

“David and Goliath.” “He Never Sleeps” is a lullaby which describes God’s love. “He never sleeps, He never slumbers. He watches me both night and day….”

Messiah – G. F. Handel (Neville Marriner -1977, London) This oratorio by George Frideric Handel chronicles the Nativity, Passion, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus. It had its premiere in Dublin on April 13, 1742 and was composed in an

astonishing 24 days. It has since become the most widely recorded and performed oratorio in the world. Each year Lincoln Center hosts a Sing-In at which attendees bring their own scores and act as a 3,000 voice audience “chorus.” [Note: SJC Director of Music Monroe Quinn has participated several times and highly recommends it!] Conducted by Neville Marriner and performed by the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, this recording features moderately brisk tempi and flawless singing. Highlights include the Chorus treatments of “And the Glory of the Lord” (Isaiah XL, 5), “And He Shall Purify” (Malachi III, 3) and “He Trusted in God” (Psalm XXII, 8). Bass Gwynne Howell shines on “The Trumpet Shall Sound” (I Corinthians XV, 52-53), as does the trumpet of John Wilbraham. Of course there is “Hallelujah” (Revelation), which, like Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue, is so ingrained in the public psyche that it has become a ring tone and advertising jingle! The astonishing strength and beauty of Messiah as heard on this recording rises above those unintended uses and lets us appreciate the work as it was meant to be. Upon completing the oratorio Handel is said to have remarked “I did think I did see all Heaven before me and the great God Himself."

Peace, Monroe

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “And if a house is divided against itself,

that house will not be able to stand.”—MARK 3:25 Do your parish ministries complement each other or do they compete against each other? Is your parish “one Body of Christ” or a bunch of little, separate ministries controlled by human ego? The goal of all parish ministries is to bring people to Christ. All of our parish work should be for the glory of God’sname, not our own name.
