Food pantry

Many thanks to those who brought extra food for our Saint Mother Theresa Food Pantry this past week. Due to the snowy and icy weather last week, our shelves were becoming a little bare. However, thanks to your continued concern, we are back to “normal” once again. Thank you for being part of this important ministry. This week we are in particular need of: tea, sugar, Alfredo sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, flour, cooking oil, cookies, paper towels and toilet paper.

Pizza with the bishop

All young men of high school and college age are invited to

bring their appetite to this special opportunity to meet Bishop Serratelli and to think about their future. You may

speak to him and to ask him questions. There are no commitments required, except the commitment to enjoy pizza and fellowship with other young men of

our neighboring parishes. It all takes place at Pope John Regional High School, 28 Andover Road in Sparta, on:

Tuesday, February 5th, from 7:00-9:00pm.

Flu season

Since we are in the midst of the cold and flu season, a reminder that if you have a cold or any flu like symptoms, please refrain from receiving from the chalice. Remember when we receive the Sacred Host alone, we are still receiving the full and complete Body, Soul and Divinity of Christ. Also, if you are not feeling your best, at the sign of peace please use an alternate form of greeting besides a handshake to protect the others in our community. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

If you would like to

participate in the Rice Bowl Program during Lent, they are available for you at the entrance of the church. Families who take part in

this program, pray, fast and give to Catholic Relief Services in solidarity with needy families throughout the world.

Seventy-five percent of our gifts go to Catholic Relief Services to support vital projects for our neighbors in need around the world. Twenty-five percent of our gifts remain here in the diocese to support our Catholic Charities Emergency Assistance Services programs.

Update on Adult Day Care

Please allow me to offer my sincere and heartfelt thanks to the many people that came to offer their condolences to Anne Lundgren’s children and brothers this past week at her wake and Mass of Christian Burial. Special thanks to the clergy that were present: Monsignor James O’Rorke, Monsignor Kieran McHugh, Father Brian Sullivan, Father Peter Filipkowski, Father Thomas Fallone, Father Michael Lee, Father Przemyslaw Gawlik, Deacon Thomas Zayac and Deacon Jerry Hanifan. It was a wonderful tribute to Anne’s dedication and commitment to the many priests she has served in her life. Additional thanks to the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, under the direction or Robert McCracken, for their many additional and special efforts they put into making the celebration of Anne’s life, the beautiful and meaningful event it truly was. Finally, specials thanks to our beloved Salesian sisters for their prayerful and loving support. They will be forever in our gratitude and in our prayers for their presence. As a community of faith, we mourn this great loss and know that Anne will be greatly missed for many years to come. Our light as a parish family has been diminished by her passing. Our loss is heaven’s gain!

As many people know, we were undertaking the great task of possibly opening an adult day care center in our school. Several people stepped up to the plate and made generous donations to help start this new ministry. Since then we have incorporated the name “Guardian Angel Day Care, LLC” and even paid for artwork for its logo. We were under the understanding that Medicaid would pay for the majority of the hours in which we hosted our clients. However, due to many changes in this type of outreach, much greater requirements are now necessary which include; a full time registered nurse and a medical doctor to be on call. Additionally, substantial paperwork is now required. Due to these increased requirements and medical staff, it is impossible to continue at this time. The good news is that we have two perspective tenants who are interested in renting our school. Of course, our Faith Formation usage is primary to anyone or any organization that is interested in our building, therefore, a shared space is always part and parcel of our rental agreement. Those who made the initial donation to the Day Care Center will be contacted by me personally and if we do not go forward with this new ministry, their donations, of course, will be returned. I just wanted everyone to be informed about what we are doing with our property as we continue to seek better ways to improve our physical, fiscal and long term goals. With regard to the former “Annex” located to the left of the Community Center, we are still awaiting some small final renovations and will hopefully open our new Thrift Shop which will be moved from our church basement. Once this move is completed, we will begin renovating our church basement to be used for “Coffee And” and possibly Liturgy of the Word with children in the future. These are just a few things that are happening on our property that I wanted to let you know. As always, we are looking to make better use of space in all our buildings. I thank you for your patience, understanding and most importantly, your continued generosity in all that we do here at Saint Joseph Church.

Many thanks!

The Feast of Saint Blaise Patron of throat illnesses

The Blessing of Throats will take place after all Masses this weekend,

February 2nd and 3rd.

Glorious Saint Blaise O Glorious Saint Blaise, who by your martyrdom has left to the Church a precious witness to the faith, obtain for us the grace to preserve within ourselves this divine gift, and to defend, without human respect, both by word and example,

the truth of that same faith, which is so wickedly attacked and slandered in these our times. You who miraculously cured a little child when it was at the point of death by reason of an affliction of the throat, grant us your powerful protection in like misfortunes; and, above all, obtain for us the grace of repentance, together with a faithful observance of our Church, and avoidance from offending Almighty God. Amen.
