Easter Sunday
Page 2 Saint John the Evangelist From the Pastor April 21, 2019 Brothers and sisters: If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. Col 3:1-4
A most blessed Easter Sunday to all of you! Today we celebrate the Feast of the Resurrection of Je-sus Christ from the dead. This is the day when Jesus, and through him our humanity, was trans-formed in a most excellent and powerful way. You see, when Jesus rose from the dead his human nature, a human nature just like ours, was glorified and made into a spiritual nature forever to be united to the Word of God. Just like us, Jesus has a body, a will, and a soul. All of these were glori-fied today in the person of Christ. In this work of God we see what God has planned for all who love him and live in that love keeping his commandments. Of course, we know that the Christian life is not one of merely observing moral precepts, but one of a personal and communal encounter with a person: Jesus Christ. Our moral observances should follow from the love we have for God, men and women who love God because we have known his love for us. In Jesus' resurrection we find the mystery, the end, and the mean-ing of human life fully revealed. In today's world, with such an absence of faith in God throughout society, one can be tempted to ask, "What's the point of it all?" or even worse to state, "There is no point, no meaning to human life." This attitude, or way of thinking has some terrible consequences. As Pope Emeritus Benedict just stated last week in a very rare published text since his retirement, a society without God is a society without meaning. He writes:
A world without God can only be a world without meaning. For where, then, does everything that is come from? In any case, it has no spiritual purpose. It is somehow simply there and has neither any goal nor any sense. Then there are no standards of good or evil. Then only what is stronger than the other can assert itself. Power is then the only principle. Truth does not count, it actually does not exist. Only if things have a spiritual reason, are intended and conceived — only if there is a Creator God who is good and wants the good — can the life of man also have meaning.
Sadly, we see this unbridled quest for power and the idea that Truth is fluid or changeable (i.e. what's true for you is not true for me, etc.) all too present in our society as the worship of God is pushed out. Thankfully, we have been blessed with the knowledge that God does exist, that he cre-ated all things, governs all things, and in Jesus Christ has redeemed all things. We know that he is the way, the truth, and the life. This is the good news for us gathered in prayer at Mass today. Je-sus Christ is risen! Through a lively faith in him we too will rise above the strife on this earth to a share in his glory. The glory prepared for every child of God.
