My Summer Vacation
We had a wonderful time on our vacation to
North Carolina and Tennessee. I got to take my
first trip to Lake Junaluska and enjoyed spending time visiting all the little shops in Maggie Valley and in
Waynesville, NC with an old friend. While we enjoyed the drier climate, it was very hot, even in the
mountains! While I ran around and had fun, Rod attended the UM Church’s Jurisdictional Conference.
Then we would meet for dinner and talk about our days. While I am not at all excited about these kind of
conferences, it was interesting to hear about how they elected five new bishops. One of those elected
is from Florida. We finished our trip up with a stop in Tennessee to see family and just relax. Then
home for a week of “stay-cation,” which I highly recommend after vacation.
While Rod was attending our Jurisdictional Conference, there were conferences like this across the
country. Each Conference elected Bishops. Some of you may have heard that the West Coast
Jurisdiction elected a self-avowed, practicing, married lesbian to be Bishop. This election was in direct
violation of Scripture and the Book of Discipline in the United Methodist Church. Needless to say, it has
created even sharper tensions within the church. And it is this that I want to address, so you know what
is going on and more importantly how it impacts us.
Initially, you need to know, nothing changes. You and I, other than knowing what happened, are in truth
not impacted by this election. We are going to continue to meet together. We are going to continue to
reach out to our neighbors and friends in the love of Jesus Christ. We are going to minister to the poor,
the rich and anyone else who will listen. We will gather for worship, prayer, communion and fellowship.
Nothing for us will change.
Nevertheless, I have to be honest with you. This election may eventually lead to a split in our
denomination. There is no reason to be concerned now, but this may happen in the future. If it does, we
as a church will have to make decisions about what to do and with whom to be affiliated. Be assured
that I will keep you informed as to all developments and options, so that if such a time comes—if and
only IF—we will be able to make decisions wisely. For now, pray for our Bishops, the soon-to-be formed
study commission, St. James and especially for the United Methodist Church. Now let’s get back to
work, making and maturing disciples for Jesus Christ!
Praying with you,
Pastor Shirley

Answered Prayer
To all who prayed for me: During the past few years, my health began to worsen, with no known cause. Unfortunately, six months ago I was near death. OnDecember 13, I was given a double lung transplant and was blessed with a second chance at life and more time to be there for my wife and children. After many complications, and, thankfully, as many recoveries, I am now better and hopeful to continue on the road to recovery. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers. My family and I are very grateful for your support. Sincerely, Eric Wurst
