This Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday. The readings invite us to consider that by the Lord Jesus we are saved and that he cares for us. St John tells us through Jesus, the Father has made us his beloved children. Jesus himself says that he is like the shepherd who cares for his sheep and lays down his life for them. Sheep could wander off and become prey for lions or wolves or other wild beasts. The Good Shepherd finds the lost and saved them from certain destruction. Sheep are not endowed with GPS systems — once lost, they stay lost. It’s the attitude of Blessed Father Stanley Francis Rother who was beatified last year. Blessed Father Rother was born to a family of farmers in Oklahoma. He studied for the priesthood and struggled with the Latin. He attended Mount St Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. He chose to become a missionary and was assigned to Santiago Atitlán (translated St James Atitlán) in Guatemala. He learned Spanish and the local language, indigenous language, Tz’utujil and was able to preach and hear confessions in these languages. His experience as a farmer was valuable to the people there, he took care of his people’s needs even helping with medical care. There is no equivalent for “Stanley,” so they called him “Padre Alpa” translated as “Father Francis,” his middle name. Also he stuck out with his red hair and beard. During the civil war in Guatemala in the 1980’s, death squads targeted priests, nuns, and catechists. He eventually was called back to Oklahoma by his Bishop, for his protection, but he longed to return to his people. He told his brother, “Well, a shepherd cannot run from his flock.” Not long after his return to Santiago Atitlán, he was murdered by a paramilitary murderers who broke into the rectory. So today is a good day to pray that the Lord, through the intercession and example of Blessed Stanley Rother, raises up courageous men and women who will become priests or religious to do his work on earth and follow the Lord’s holy flock whatever it takes, at home and in the missions.

Stewardship Reflections “I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep…and they

will heed my voice.” – JOHN 10:14-16

When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for the things that you want? Do you ever ask Him what He wants from you? How do you listen for His response? Usually, the answer is in “quiet whispers”, so take time every day, in silence, to actively listen for His response.
